One year ago, I pitched my idea and was accepted into the inaugural #afroproject team at @fellowshiphair, marking a significant moment in an institution dedicated to shaping the future of hairdressing for an impressive 77 years. Our fearless team leader, @jacquimacintosh, used her extensive knowledge and industry respect to connect us with some of the most talented Afro hair stylists across various disciplines. In an ideal world, there should be no need for such a specific project, but the unfortunate reality is that the majority of U.K. colleges and salon education neglected Afro hair as it wasn’t compulsory. Fortunately, pockets of British talent have advocated for change, and it wasn’t until last year that Afro hair was finally incorporated into our hairdressing curriculum. My hope is that we’ll witness a more inclusive cross-cultural curriculum as both industry professionals and consumers demand equality. On our project’s first day, we delved into the science of hair, with a special focus on the unique characteristics of tightly textured hair and the remarkable diversity it encompasses. We also explored the historical journey of British Afro hair, from its past to its present, providing me with an enlightening experience. Throughout the program, Jacqui introduced us to our mentors, each contributing their talents, skills, expertise, and passion while generously sharing their knowledge. These individuals aren’t just titles; they boast a wealth of experience and a substantial body of work. They’re the real deal! The video above showcases our project finale, where all Fellowship projects came together to celebrate their achievements. My personal mission has been to advocate for equity for curls, a goal that extends beyond the #afroproject; it was evident throughout all Fellowship projects this weekend. As we anticipate 2024, it’s clear that it will be even bigger and better. I encourage you to join us and be part of this transformative change.

So what’s it all about? Well, it’s not a difficult message: we want equitable treatment for waves/curls/tight coils/Afro hair. Are we the first to suggest this? Hey, of course not! There are many people all over the globe asking for the same as us. We cofounded the @crossculturalcurlcollective as a platform to try to bring a bit of unity. A place where we can champion everyone that’s trying to share their passion, experience, creativity, and love of textured hair in all its forms. It’s a huge task and often overwhelming. But as we’re by no means the gatekeepers, we need and invite everyone to help and contribute 💕 So with that in mind, Sunday was just awesome! I’m fearful of missing somebody off the list, so please if you came up and contributed to the conversation and I haven’t tagged you, please message in the comments. Erica @themusecurls setup #textureunravelled initiative supported by @nhbfsocial. They have been awesome helping to support and promote our message to their members and further a field. So I’m heading to London again, and this time my daughter and I are going to see the musical Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends! We’re very excited - we love musicals and this experience will be outstanding! We’re headed to the Gielgud Theatre to see Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends! Oh, and the cast... mind officially blown! So I’ve been on the road, and I wanted to see the team and this awesome new mural that my friend Fredrik has been working on while I’ve been away. Damn, this artist is great! Check out his work! Mya wanted her hair styled for the trip, and this was a perfect opportunity to try some of the new cocktails we were using on the road as an @innersensepro educator, like the Cucumber Basil Cooler and the Mango Hibiscus Margarita. @breannabell_ has had a huge influence on this styling today. The results I believe speak for themselves, but it’s how quickly we produced them that still blows my mind. All products used @innersenseorganicbeauty Quick tip... when breaking cast, a quick combo of Inner Peace and I Create Shine is just lovely 💕. #sondheimoldfriends #innersensepro #curlyhairexpertglasgow #glasgowsalon #lovemusicals
My name is Scott, and I'm the founder of Belle and Blackley. Several times last week, I was asked why I'm so passionate about curly hair, and specifically Afro hair. It's an obvious question to some, but I can see why it might be confusing. After all, I don't have an Afro myself. But my lack of a fro or dreads doesn't hide my lived experience. I still see myself as a "curly," and it's definitely how I identify myself! To me, hair texture isn't about skin color. It's about a person's lived experience. This shapes our view of our hair, our selves, and our place in the world. It can leave a lasting impact. At Belle and Blackley, we don't just teach the "how" of curly hair care. We also teach the "why." We believe that it's important to understand the lived experiences of people with curly hair in order to provide them with the best possible care. We've created a safe space where you can explore your scalp, hair, and lived experience. We want to help you love your hair, no matter what your background or experience.Book your appointment today and let us help you on your curly hair journey!Link in bio.#naturalhair #naturalhaircommunity #naturalhairjourney #blackhair #afro #afrohair #afrohairstyles #afrolove #afrohairdontcare #curlyhairdontcare #curlyhaircommunity #curltalk #curlsfordays #hairgoals #hairinspiration #hairinspo #hairlove #lovemyhair #blackgirlmagic #blackgirlboss #blackhairisbeautiful
