Meet the founders!

Chris Hughes created the Present Pal App to support disabled students deliver more confident and prepared presentations. Since launching in 2018, the software now supports disabled students in over 150 universities across the UK and North America.In 2024 Estendio will launch its second product, Nomo - a reading enhancement tool to create the perfect reading experience specific to individuals reading preferences or needs.

Inside info: Chris started his entrepreneurial journey at the age of 18 and his experience over the past 10 years has been a huge inspiration to the other founders in the hub. ❤️

This sums up the tech scene. There was a miscommunication re the venue for 1 event so we never made that. Around the same time we asked for recommendations and found ourselves at a 2nd event.

It was hosted and attended by alumni where we heard some more amazing stories!

Our pick of the bunch was an Indian founder being accepted onto the programme with only an idea on a piece of paper. She relocated to San Francisco and within 12-18 months she was successful in raising $1.2M! This kind of trajectory is something I could only dream about back in Scotland.

Notable mention from various founders that they are constantly being bombarded by investors.

Tip received: Focus on building your product and constantly asking for user feedback. Everything else will fall into place.

We are now able to resume so let’s catch up with the past few days. The first fireside panel chat was a real eye opener for various reasons:

- Every founder has a killer 1 liner and it’s something we had to improve on. It’s also about the delivery as here is an example:

“We move shipping containers.”
Pause for a few seconds to let people digest that info, then comes the detail like “our platform uses AI to track data like A, B and C which helps X, Y and Z.”

- has an incredible alumni who have all sang their praises. The funding received once you’ve been accepted onto the programme has helped founders relocate to San Francisco, immerse themselves full time and concentrate on scaling quickly! The pace is miles ahead of Scotland.

- Founders struggle to recruit. Something we are providing a solution for but that’s another post 😉

- Anyone joining a start-up board needs to understand that it’s the founder who is the main decision maker. They make the decisions in the best interest of the company.

- Any advisors should have milestones set rather than agreeing to a time commitment.

Let’s start meeting some of the other Scottish start-ups who made the journey to San Francisco! ✈️

Eilidh is the founder for who connects brands with new customers through gamification. They helped promote who were one of the sponsors for the !

Fun fact is they were successful in raising their pre-seed round through angel investors when they had no traction and only a concept. Just shows it can be done and it’s inspirational to others going through this roller coaster.

Competency based questions is your chance to sell your ability by turning negative scenarios into a positive outcome. Story tell according to your experience but keep it factual and concise by using the S.T.A.R format:

Situation (Paint the picture)
I worked in a call centre for a utility company and on one occasion I had an angry customer complain that they were overcharged by £200.

Task (Explain what your goal is)
I established that they haven’t given a meter reading in 1 year so their bill wasn’t accurate.

Action (Detail exactly what you did to resolve the situation)
I asked for recent meter readings and recalculated an accurate bill.

Result (Conclusion?)
Customer satisfied and understands the importance of providing regular meter readings.

Where’s the strangest place you’ve ever received advice from? 🤔
Ours came from a Warzone streamer (Tomographic), who stated; ‘zero viewers doesn’t mean zero potential! We all started at zero! Believe in yourself and your content. Only then will you start to see those numbers rise.’
