NEW EPISODE! Jasmine is a social work student and a careleaver. Jasmine spent a year in the hospital due to her mental health and came out and went into care at 14 years old and took her GCSEs in the hospital. Jasmine discusses the importance of her stable foster home, what more could have been done to pick up on her mental health during social workers' visits, and how she feels about turning 25 and not having any involvement or support from social services but also Jasmine wanted the chance to thank the social workers for what they have done as without them Jasmine said she wouldn't be where she is now.

NEW PODCAST OUT TODAY!!

Today I had a great chat with Lynne about her time in foster care from 4–8 years old with her two younger siblings, how she felt then, what expectations people had of her, her role with her siblings, her foster care experiences, and so much more! Lynne was adopted with both her siblings, and we discussed how this felt, knowing she had a family and a stable home. Lynne has gone on to be a nurse, founder of Ripple Rebels, and works in social innovation, reducing inequalities in access to health and social care. Thank you again for taking the time to chat with me!

How is the goverment allowing our care system to remain so broken even with the voices of children that have lived within it? More needs to be done to make this a system we should be proud of!

By David Jones* Three young adults who I worked with in a children’s home for four years, and who left our care five years ago, agreed to meet me to discuss their experience of the care system and how it compares with what they read and hear about it now. Liz*, 20, is a trainee […]

NEW EPISODE!!!
In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking to Richard Williams, a senior lecturer at Bournemouth University. During Richard's career, he has managed children's homes in London, ran special schools, been the principal officer of an education social work service, SENCO, researched the outcomes of looked after, and much more! In this episode, we talk about expectations of looked-after children, what more needs to be done to educate teachers and social workers, the importance of education, the need to support looked-after children thoroughly through university, and much more!I have learned so much from this conversation, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I am a social work student at Bournemouth university, and I have started a podcast to give children and professionals a voice about the low outcomes of looked after children

Children in care have low educational outcomes and these spirals to low outcomes throughout life.

Children don't automatically get counselling when they go into care even though the majority have experienced neglect or abuse.

These children are being refused support through CAMHS as their life is too unstable! These children then go on to show challenging behaviour and have a high chance or being excluded from school.

This behaviour leads to frequent placement moves as foster carers aren't taught how to deal with these behaviours which continues their unstable life.

This needs to change and I would love to hear from anyone who wants to have a voice about this!
It would be cheaper to put looked after children in boarding school than it would keep them in foster care moving them around.

Thankyou

Jess
