Some free sound exploration with our Tueasday participants :)
Having adapted instruments tuned in a diatonic or pentatonic scale can help overcome the barriers that are present when playing conventional chromatic instruments and can set the foundations for meaningful improvisation without the need of previous musical experience. In such setting, tempo and steady rhythm is welcome but not essential, as not everyone has the same abilities in rhythm perception or can play steadily due to physical limitations. However, there are other elements that can solidify a group of improvising musicians such as pitch, texture and dynamics, and the use of diatonic instruments guarantees that the resulting music is always in tune. Our mission is to provide a platform for non-verbal communication and self-expression, and work towards outcomes such as empowerment, relaxation, increasing self-confidence and alleviating isolation through the creation of harmonious soundscapes.
Into The Music has funding through the Scottish Government’s Youth Music Initiative and Creative Scotland to provide Free workshops for children and young people with learning disabilities living in Edinburgh and the Lothians. Into The Music is a new community music project starting next month at @the.wee.hub at Ocean Terminal in Leith. We are very excited to announce that we have been awarded the Youth Music Initiative Access To Music fund, which will allow us to provide music improvisation workshops to children and young people with additional needs in a relaxed, tactile environment. The vision of Into The Music is to bring participants together through improvisation on purpose-built accessible string instruments, tuned percussion and digital technology, giving the opportunity to everyone (no matter their ability or musical experience) to explore group music making without the fear of making mistakes.
Above is a short video made with some of the instruments prepared for the project. They are played randomly and out of sync. The result will be different and surely more interesting when there is interaction between participants 🙂.
Please watch this space for updates in the following days. In the meantime, if you are interested, please get in touch here or in [email protected]. Many thanks to @creativescots , @pianodrome , @upmoproject and @the.wee.hub for their support and help. Without your help this project would not have been possible 🙏
