The Durham Original Music & Alumni Network (DOMAN) aims to promote the creation of innovative grass-roots music from university students, encouraging collaboration between student artists wherever they may find themselves musically in the process. Whether writing a string quartet or producing for the radio, DOMAN aims to give new music a platform in Durham, thus recognising the need for contemporary innovation in the curriculum. Through networking events, showcases and a multitude of jam sessions held each term, friendships – and by proxy, networks – will be formed between students and student groups. Constructive workshops, held by returning university alumni, also allow current students to learn and be inspired by the functional and promotional techniques used by professionals outside the university sphere. The team that will be helping accomplishing this goal for the 2020/21 academic year is as follow:
Secretary – Lizzie Lloyd ([email protected])
Treasurer – Ishaan Shukla ([email protected])
Alumni Relations Officer(s) – George Bone ([email protected]) and Finola Southgate ([email protected])
Below are simply a sample of the sort of opportunities that DOMAN provides:
Networking Sessions:
Are you a Durham-based musician?
Do you write your own music? Or even: are you a poet and write your own lyrics?
Interested in forming a band - or getting your current one out there?
If so, then we invite you to one of our networking sessions!
This event will give you an opportunity to hear the musical stories of our new exec, as well as an opportunity to talk about your own experiences writing and performing your own stuff! If you find someone, or even a group of people, that you feel you get along with, we'll move you into a break-off group so that you can collaborate on your own!
Jam Sessions:
These jam sessions are to put into practice the communication that went on in the networking sessions! Come with your band, looking for a band, or just looking to have a fun time making music with new people. Ending at however late your musical creativity takes you, these jam sessions have gone on to create some of the work that the public hear at DOMAN Showcases; what’s stopping your work from doing the same?
This year while we encourage you heavily to not only wear a mask, bring your own equipment and stay your distance, if you have any problems with this feel free to give us a message.
Alumni/Student Link-Up Scheme:
Want to get some feedback from outside the Durham bubble? Want to see what talent is coming through Durham's doors and see them develop through their creative pursuits? Whether working in the industry, planning on pursuing music or keeping it up as a side project, all are welcome to the DOMAN community where your creations are what counts.
Alumni Workshops and Masterclass:
As the society gets older and older, the more of a network we create. The more of a network we create, the more people achieve to expand their musical presence. The more they expand their musical presence, the more insight they will get into their own career, and can therefore share that knowledge with current university students! While this year will be a challenging feat to hold in-person networking events, we will try our best to give you digital sessions with some amazing Durham alumni-past!
End-Of-Term Showcases:
This is IT. The time where you can apply to perform at, and share to the world, your original music! More information will come out towards the end of the term, however we will make you aware of thee audition process at every opportunity we can!
