2nd term ✅

As we come to the close of another semester, it’s a fitting time to reflect on the last few months of KSS. This project is all about coming together, to celebrate the sounds of the world, to rejoice in the infinitely diverse yet universal human experience, and to appreciate the power of music from all over the world to convey the shared nature of that experience. Music, in short, brings people together. And together, we’ve been on a truly incredible journey.

In the past semester, we’ve heard music from the Andes to the Ganges, from Beirut and Brazil, Pakistan and Perth, Senegal and Sudan and so, so much more. To date, we’ve heard the music of 87 Nations, spanning 6 continents (Penguin week soon to come 🇦🇶 ), countless cultures, dozens of languages, and many decades, from the 1940s to the present day. Finding this music from all across the globe and sharing it with you has been a pleasure.

We’d really like to thank everyone whose tuned in this semester and encouraged us to continue on this musical journey! Coming together to listen to this music is always the happiest part of our week, and we really hope it’s brought you all a bit of international joy during these tough times.

We’ve got big news! KSS will now be uploading our past and future episodes to Mixcloud, where they can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere.

We’re all about making international music more accessible, and hope that the mixcloud page will help us do just that, by allowing our listeners to enjoy this wonderful music whenever they please.

Considéré par certains comme le père de la musique du monde, Francis Bebey (1929 – 2001) est poète, auteur-compositeur, chanteur et guitariste camerounais. Journaliste de radio en Afrique et en France, directeur du Programme de la musique à l’UNESCO, son rôle est essentiel dans la diffusion et la légitimation des musiques africaines. Son style joint l’humour à la poésie, il s’accompagne d’instruments traditionnels et se produit dans plus de 75 pays. Son plaisir de jouer avec les mots se reflète dans ses créations musicales et poétiques mais aussi dans ses articles, études et reportages sur la musique et les arts africains.

We are so excited for this Thursday, where we’ll be taking a deep dive into the Sounds of Siam.

Join us as we explore the psychedelic sounds of South East Asia, guided by traditional instruments and submerging rhythms. This isn't one to miss!

We shall draw upon genres such as Molam, Luk Thung, Isaan, learning how the Siam Folk music revival has created waves worldwide.

Join us this Thursday (4pm) for a celebration of the Pan-African sound of Afrobeat. We will be delving into the technicolour lives of musical pioneers Fela Kuti and Francis Bebey, exploring their careers and the ongoing relevance of their music to this day.

Here is an article by The Oxford Student tying together the ongoing atrocities in Nigeria with the 1970's activism of Fela Kuti, The Black President.
