Zahida Khatoon Sherwani: The (First) Feminist Voice in Urdu Resistance Poetry

Zahida Khatoon Sherwani, widely known by her pen name Z.K.S., holds a unique position in Urdu poetry. She is the first female poet whose depth of thought and creative expression make her impossible to overlook. She is arguably the first feminist voice of resistance in Urdu literature. Despite the conventions of her time, which compelled her to hide her identity by adopting various pseudonyms and even abstaining from writing for a while, her poetry captivated readers.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1894 in the household of Nawab Sir Muzammil Khan in Aligarh, Zahida belonged to a wealthy and traditional family. Despite strict restrictions of purdah, she received education in Urdu, Arabic, and Persian at home. Her poetry not only addressed national and patriotic issues but also passionately and unequivocally raised a voice for women's rights and against social inequalities.
Poetry and Literary Contributions
One of her famous poems, published in Ismat magazine in October 1912, appealed for donations to the Muhammadan University. A couplet from this poem deeply touched the hearts of readers:
"O sisters, pride of our nation, virtuous and modest ones,
From time immemorial, you have been the comforters of men’s sorrows."
Due to her impactful poetry, Zahida Khatoon was also called the Iqbal of women. She published two poetry collections: Aina-e-Haram (The Mirror of the Sanctuary) and Firdous-e-Takhayul (The Paradise of Imagination). The latter was published posthumously and included 121 poems, showcasing a remarkable diversity of themes and creative prowess.
Tragically, her ghazals were destroyed at her father's behest, a painful reminder of the lack of women’s rights and the narrow-mindedness of that era.
A Voice for Women’s Rights
Through her poetry, Zahida Khatoon raised her voice against the injustices faced by women and advocated for their rights. Her poems reflect a sensitive and awakened heart that empathized with women's struggles:
"For the rights of women, adherents of every faith and creed,
Man was either an animal, a deity, a demon, or the devil indeed.
Whether a father, brother, husband, or son he be,
In every form, man remained a tyrant unbridled and free.
To the unknowing eyes of men, woman was but
a mere presence,
A statue, a toy, a lifeless essence."
Death and Legacy
Zahida Khatoon passed away at the young age of 27 in 1922. Scholar Rashid-ul-Khairi wrote upon her death:
"She was such an exceptional woman that one would scarcely find her equal among Muslims today."
Her cousin, Aneesa Khatoon Sherwani, compiled and published her poetry 18 years after her death. Zahida Khatoon Sherwani’s poetry remains a milestone in the history of Urdu literature, continuing to inspire readers with its depth, courage, and timeless relevance.

زاہدہ خاتون شیروانی، جو
ز۔خ۔ش کے قلمی نام سے مشہور ہیں، اردو شاعری میں ایک منفرد مقام رکھتی ہیں۔ وہ پہلی خاتون شاعرہ ہیں جنہیں ان کی فکر کی گہرائی اور تخلیقی اظہار کی بدولت نظرانداز کرنا ممکن نہیں۔ وہ غالبا اردو ادب کی پہلی نسائی مزاحمتی اواز ہیں۔ اس دور کی روایت کو برقرار رکھتے ہوئے اگرچہ انہوں نے اپنی شناخت کو چھپانے کی بھرپور کوشش کی، مختلف نام اپنائے اور کچھ عرصہ لکھنے سے گریز بھی کیا، لیکن ان کی شاعری نے قارئین کو اپنی جانب متوجہ کیا۔
ابتدائی زندگی اور تعلیم
زاہدہ 1894 میں علی گڑھ کے نواب سر مزمل خان کے گھر پیدا ہوئیں۔ متمول اور روایتی خاندان تھا۔ پردے کی سخت پابندیوں کے باوجود، انہوں نے گھر پر اردو، عربی، اور فارسی کی تعلیم حاصل کی۔ اپنی شاعری میں انہوں نے نہ صرف ملی مسائل اور وطن پرستی کو موضوع بنایا بلکہ عورتوں کے حقوق اور سماجی نابرابری کے خلاف بھی بھرپور اور واضح آواز اٹھائی۔
شاعری اور ادبی خدمات
ان کی ایک مشہور نظم اکتوبر 1912ء میں رسالہ عصمت میں شائع ہوئی، جو محمڈن یونیورسٹی کے لیے چندے کی اپیل پر مبنی تھی۔ اس نظم کے ایک شعر نے قارئین کے دلوں کو چھو لیا:
اے فخرِ قوم بہنو، عصمت شعار بہنو
مردوں کی ہو ازل سے تم غم گسار بہنو
زاہدہ خاتون کو ان کی شاعری کی بدولت عورتوں کا اقبال بھی کہا جاتا ہے۔ ان کے دو مجموعہ کلام، آئینۂ حرم اور فردوسِ تخیل منظرِ عام پر آئے۔ ان میں سے فردوسِ تخیل ان کی وفات کے بعد شائع ہوا، جس میں 121 نظمیں شامل ہیں۔ یہ نظمیں موضوعات کی گوناگونی اور تخلیقی صلاحیتوں کا بھرپور اظہار کرتی ہیں۔
بدقسمتی سے، ان کی غزلوں کو ان کے والد کے ایماء پر تلف کر دیا گیا تھا۔ یہ دردناک بات اس دور میں خواتین کے حقوق کے فقدان اور روایتی تنگ نظری کی مظہر ہے
عورتوں کے حقوق کی آواز
زاہدہ خاتون نے اپنی شاعری کے ذریعے عورتوں کے حقوق اور ان کے ساتھ روا رکھے گئے ظلم کے خلاف آواز بلند کی۔ ان کی نظموں میں خواتین کے لیے ایک حساس اور بیدار دل کی جھلک ملتی ہے

عورتوں کے حق میں ہر مذہب کا ہر ملّت کا مرد
جانور تھا، دیوتا تھا، عفریت، شیطان تھا
باپ ہو، بھائی ہو، شوہر ہو کہ ہو فرزند وہ
مرد کُل اشکال میں فرعونِ بے سامان تھا
مرد کی نا آشنا نظروں میں عورت کا وجود
ایک مورت، اک کھلونا، اک تنِ بے جان تھا۔
وفات اور وراثت
زاہدہ خاتون صرف 27 سال کی عمر میں 1922ء میں وفات پا گئیں۔ علامہ راشد الخیری نے ان کے انتقال پر لکھا:
"وہ اس پائے کی عورت تھیں کہ آج مسلمانوں میں اس کی نظیر مشکل سے ملے گی۔"
ان کی خالہ زاد بہن انیسہ خاتون شیروانی نے ان کے انتقال کے 18 سال بعد ان کی شاعری کو مرتب کر کے شائع کیا۔ زاہدہ خاتون شیروانی کی شاعری آج بھی اردو ادب کی تاریخ میں ایک سنگِ میل کی حیثیت رکھتی ہے۔

Edwin Hubble: The Unveiler of the Universe's Secrets

Edwin Hubble, an American astronomer, was born in 1889. This one individual transformed humanity's understanding and knowledge of the universe. Once a high school basketball coach, Edwin Hubble initially pursued astronomy as a mere hobby, but his passion soon led to groundbreaking discoveries in the field.

In the 1920s, using the Ho**er telescope, he proved the existence of distant galaxies beyond our own. This discovery shattered the prevailing belief that our galaxy was the entirety of the universe. Hubble's most significant finding was that these galaxies are continuously moving away from us, a revelation that confirmed the universe is expanding. This concept later became the foundation of the Big Bang theory.

Hubble's work provided humanity with a revolutionary understanding of the universe's vastness and offered a fresh perspective on the cosmos.

ایڈون ہبل، ایک امریکی ماہر فلکیات، 1889 میں پیدا ہوا۔ اس ایک فرد نے کائنات کے بارے میں انسانیت کے علم اور فہم کو یکسر بدل دیا۔ کسی زمانے میں ہائی اسکول کے باسکٹ بال کوچ کی حیثیت سے کام کرنے والے ایڈون ہبل نے فلکیات کو ابتدا میں محض ایک شوق کے طور پر اپنایا، لیکن جلد ہی ان کے جنون نے اس شعبے میں انقلابی دریافتوں کو جنم دیا۔

1920 کی دہائی میں، ہکر دوربین کا استعمال کرتے ہوئے، انہوں نے یہ ثابت کیا کہ ہماری کہکشاں سے باہر بھی دیگر دور دراز کہکشائیں موجود ہیں۔ اس دریافت نے اس نظریے کو غلط ثابت کر دیا کہ ہماری کہکشاں ہی پوری کائنات ہے۔ ہبل کی سب سے اہم دریافت یہ تھی کہ یہ کہکشائیں ہم سے مسلسل دور جا رہی ہیں، جس سے یہ حقیقت سامنے آئی کہ کائنات مسلسل پھیل رہی ہے۔ یہی نظریہ بعد میں بگ بینگ کے تصور کی بنیاد بنا۔

Dear friends, I am currently visiting the United States, and yesterday, I had the opportunity to visit the town of Ashburn in Virginia. On the surface, this place appears calm and peaceful, but it holds a significant role in our digital world. Here, I saw large data centers—vast and secure buildings housing countless servers that keep the internet operational and running smoothly. It was fascinating to learn that years ago, this very area was a key starting point in the journey of the internet, with American Online (AOL) playing a part in it. Today, these data centers are like the heartbeat of the internet, quietly powering our everyday websites, emails, and apps. This brief visit to Ashburn allowed me to grasp the importance of this hidden infrastructure that ensures global connectivity and advancement in the digital age.

Camus and Sisyphus

"Albert Camus was a renowned French philosopher and author. In his writings, he often explored the absurdity of human life and the helplessness tied to it. In his essay The Myth of Sisyphus, he uses the Greek mythological figure Sisyphus as a metaphor. Sisyphus was condemned by the gods to repeatedly roll a boulder up a mountain, only for it to roll back down once it reached the top. Through this metaphor, Camus questions the meaning of continuous human struggle and whether it holds any significance."

We’ve been wandering in this valley for who knows how long. All around us, large boulders are scattered.
I am not alone here. In fact, more than six billion individuals are spread out across this valley, roaming between these rocks. In front of us is a towering mountain — the mountain of life. Something is inscribed on these boulders. Let's take a closer look. Each boulder has different words engraved on it: material success, fame, wealth, and love.

Each of us must choose one heavy boulder, whichever it may be. Then we must hoist it onto our shoulders and begin the ascent up the mountain of life, aiming for its peak. But once we reach the summit, the boulder will tumble down again from our shoulders, rolling back to the valley below. And then we will have to pick it up once more and start climbing the mountain of life all over again.

We are all Sisyphus, condemned by unknown gods. Our only freedom and rebellion lie in the fact that we can choose our own boulder. We can find meaning in the continuous struggle of climbing the mountain of life.

I have chosen my boulder. On it is inscribed "Love" — love for life and love for humanity!

Have you chosen your boulder?

Whether tomorrow's Camus writes the story of Sisyphus again or not, the hardship or ease of our punishment is tied to our choices.

With the heavy boulder of love on my shoulders, I begin this journey.

"البرٹ کامیو ایک مشہور فرانسیسی فلسفی اور مصنف تھا۔ وہ اپنی تحریروں میں انسان کی زندگی کے بے معنی ہونے اور اس کے ساتھ جڑے بے بس حالات کو موضوع بناتا ہے۔ کامیو کے مضمون "سیسیفس کا افسانہ" میں، وہ یونانی دیومالا کے ایک کردار سیسیفس کی تمثیل کا سہارا لیتا ہے جسے دیوتاؤں نے ایک چٹان کو پہاڑ کی چوٹی تک لے جانے کی سزا دی تھی۔ اونچائی پر پہنچ کر ہر بار وہ چٹان پھر سے نیچے لڑھک جاتی تھی۔ اس تمثیل کے ذریعے کامیو نے انسان کی مسلسل جدوجہد اور اس کے بامعنی ہونے یا نہ ہونے پر سوال اٹھایا ہے۔"

ہم اس وادی میں جانے کب سے ہیں۔ ہر طرف بڑی بڑی چٹانیں بکھری ہوئی ہیں۔
میں یہاں اکیلا نہیں ہوں، بلکہ چھ بلین سے زیادہ افراد اس وادی میں ایک ہی وقت میں بکھرے ہوئے ہیں اور ان چٹانوں کے درمیان گھوم رہے ہیں۔ ہمارے سامنے ایک اونچا سا پہاڑ ہے – زندگی کا پہاڑ۔ ان چٹانوں پر کچھ لکھا ہوا ہے، آئیے قریب سے دیکھتے ہیں۔ ان چٹانوں پر کہیں کچھ اور کہیں کچھ لکھا نظر آتا ہے: مادی کامیابی، شہرت، مال و دولت، اور محبت۔

ہم میں سے ہر ایک کو کسی ایک وزنی چٹان کا انتخاب کرنا ہے، چاہے وہ کوئی سی بھی ہو۔ پھر اسے اپنے کاندھے پر اٹھا کر زندگی کے اس پہاڑ پر چڑھنا ہے۔ اس کی چوٹی تک پہنچنا ہے۔ جب ہم وہاں پہنچیں گے، تو یہ چٹان ہمارے کاندھے اور پہاڑ کی بلندی سے لڑھک کر دوبارہ وادی میں آگرے گی۔ پھر ہمیں دوبارہ اسے کاندھے پر چڑھا کر زندگی کا پہاڑ چڑھنا ہوگا۔

ہم سب سیسیفس ہیں، نامعلوم دیوتاؤں کی سزا کے سزاوار۔ ہماری آزادی اور بغاوت محض اتنی ہے کہ ہم اپنی چٹان کا انتخاب خود کریں۔ زندگی کے پہاڑ پر چڑھنے کی مسلسل جدوجہد میں خود اپنے لیے معنی تلاش کریں۔

میں نے ایک چٹان کا انتخاب کیا ہے۔ اس پر لکھا ہے "محبت" – زندگی سے اور انسانیت سے محبت!

کیا آپ نے کسی چٹان کا انتخاب کیا؟

سیسیفس کی یہ کہانی آنے والے کل کا البرٹ کامیو لکھے یا نہ لکھے، لیکن ہماری سزا کی سختی اور آسانی ہمارے انتخاب سے منسلک ہے۔

Homo Sapiens: The Pursuit of Becoming the "Wise Human"

Homo sapiens means "wise human." It implies that we are a species defined by intellect and insight.

But do we truly live up to this title? Ask yourself, are we really wise? Or are we still enslaved by greed and divided by race, religion, ethnicity, and nationality?

Conflicts such as the Israel-Palestine crisis, the Ukraine-Russia war, and the atrocities against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar show that we are still far from true wisdom. In our own region, the human rights violations by the Afghan Taliban and the collapse of democracy in Pakistan are stark reminders of our short-sightedness and foolish behavior. These are clear signs of our intellectual and moral deficiencies.

Perhaps we are still on a journey — striving to become the "wise human" that we claim to be. We will only reach that destination when we learn to cultivate compassion, kindness, and a love for collective humanity. We must learn to live in harmony with one another. At this point in history, we are not yet deserving of this title.

ہومو سیپینز: "عقلمند انسان" بننے کی جستجو

ہومو سیپینز کا مطلب ہے "عقل مند انسان"۔ یعنی ہم ایک ایسی مخلوق ہیں جس کی پہچان عقل اور بصیرت ہے۔

لیکن کیا ہم اس لقب پر پورا اترتے ہیں؟ خود سے سوال کیجیے، کیا ہم واقعی عقل مند ہیں؟ یا آج بھی ہم لالچ کے غلام ہیں، اور رنگ، مذہب، نسل، اور قومیت کی بنیاد پر تقسیم شدہ ہیں؟

اسرائیل-فلسطین تنازع، یوکرین-روس جنگ، اور میانمار میں روہنگیا مسلمانوں پر مظالم جیسے تنازعات اس بات کا ثبوت ہیں کہ ہم حقیقی حکمت سے ابھی بہت دور ہیں۔ ہمارے اپنے خطے میں، افغان طالبان کے ہاتھوں انسانی حقوق کی پامالی اور پاکستان میں جمہوریت کی تباہی ہماری کوتاہ نظری اور غیر عقلمندانہ طرز عمل کی مثالیں ہیں۔ یہ ہمارے ذہنی اور اخلاقی فقدان کی واضح علامت ہیں۔

شاید ہم ابھی تک سفر میں ہیں — "عقلمند انسان" بننے کی جستجو میں مصروف۔ اس منزل تک ہم تب ہی پہنچ سکتے ہیں جب ہم ہمدردی، مہربانی اور اجتماعی انسانیت سے محبت کی صلاحیت پیدا کر لیں۔ ہمیں ایک دوسرے کے ساتھ ہم آہنگی سے جینا سیکھنا ہوگا۔ فی الحال، موجودہ تاریخ کے اس موڑ پر ہم اس لقب کے مستحق نہیں۔

Yusra Mardini: An Example of Determination and Courage

Yusra Mardini is a Syrian swimmer who demonstrated incredible strength and courage. In 2015, fleeing the devastation of war in Damascus, she embarked on a dangerous and unsafe sea journey to Europe. When the overcrowded refugee boat started sinking in the Aegean Sea, Yusra, her sister, and two other refugee swimmers swam for hours, guiding the boat to a safe place and saving many lives. Yusra's journey didn't end there. After obtaining temporary asylum in Germany, she underwent rigorous training and, through sheer hard work, qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics, representing the Refugee Olympic Team. Yusra's story is a powerful example of human determination and resilience, reminding us that with courage and persistence, even the greatest challenges can be overcome, and no obstacle is too great to achieve one's dreams.

یُسرہ مردینی ایک شامی تیراک ہے جس نے حیرت انگیز قوت اور ہمت کا مظاہرہ کیا۔ 2015 میں دمشق میں جنگ کی تباہ کاریوں سے بچ کر بھاگتے ہوئے وہ یورپ کے ایک خطرناک اور غیر محفوظ بحری سفر پر روانہ ہوئی۔ جب ایجیئن سمندر میں غیر قانونی پناہ گزینوں کی یہ مسافروں سے بھری کشتی ڈوبنے لگی تو یُسرہ، اس کی بہن، اور دو دیگر تیراک پناہ گزینوں نے گھنٹوں تیراکی کر کے کشتی کو محفوظ مقام تک پہنچایا اور بہت سے لوگوں کی جان بچائی۔ یسرہ کا سفر یہاں ختم نہ ہوا۔ جرمنی میں عارضی قیام حاصل کرنے کے بعد، اس نے پر مشقت ٹریننگ حاصل کی اور سخت محنت کے بعد 2016 کے ریو اولمپکس کے لیے کوالیفائی کیا اور ریفیوجی اولمپک ٹیم کی نمائندگی کی۔ یُسرہ کی کہانی انسانی عزم و حوصلے کی طاقتور مثال ہے جو ہمیں یاد دلاتی ہے کہ ہمت اور استقامت کی مدد سے بڑے سے بڑے چیلنجز کا مقابلہ کیا جا سکتا ہے اور خوابوں کو پورا کرنے کے لیے کوئی بھی رکاوٹ عبور کی جا سکتی ہے
