Jilted Scot attacked estranged wife, grandmother and child in desperate bid to steal dog

A jilted lover attacked his estranged wife, a frail grandmother, a child and two other people in a desperate bid to steal a pet dog.

George Scott carried out the violent rampage after storming into his former partner's home to get his hands on Casper the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

A court heard how ownership of the dog was "a bone of contention" between Scott and his wife.

The 33-year-old was having only visitation rights to the couple's dog and decided he wanted to take the pet away to live with him.

Scott, from Dundee, admitted stealing the dog and assaulting five people in the process at an address in Wentworth Avenue, Dundee, on 9 January this year.

Fiscal depute Stewart Duncan told Dundee Sheriff Court: "He and Charlene Scott had been in an on off relationship for nine years. They separated in early December.

"This was the final termination. She was living with her family, including her mother who was vulnerable due to health conditions.

"Casper is her dog but he has tried to take it in the past. He was told it would not be returned to him as it belonged to Charlene Scott.

"He sounded enraged by this. They felt he was under the influence of alcohol, given how easily he flew into a rage when told he was not getting Casper."

Some time later, Mrs Scott's door flew open "wildly" and the accused stormed straight towards the terrified occupants shouting: "Get my dog. I want my dog."

Scott was told he was not getting the dog and he was repeatedly asked to leave but he refused to. Instead he started pushing people out of his way.

He pushed Mrs Scott's mother so hard that she flew across the room and struck her head against a wall.

Mr Duncan said an 82-year-old grandmother, described as "incredibly slim" and an 11-year-old girl were among the other people in the house who were attacked.

"He tried to enter the kitchen where Casper was barking. He demanded to get the dog back from Mrs Scott. She stated it was her dog.

"She tried to place her body between him and the dog to prevent him getting a hold. He shoved her and grabbed Casper by the neck.

Scott briefly put the dog down to punch another man in the face, before grabbing the dog again and taking him out of the property.

When he was arrested, Scott told police: "Do you serve the people or the Queen? I'm a political prisoner. F**k off, no comment, c***s."

Scott admitted five charges of assault and stealing the dog and he was jailed for a total of 16 months by Sheriff Alistair Carmichael.

Solicitor Gary McIlravey, defending, said: "He has a record he is not proud of. The bone of contention was that both laid claim to the dog.

"An informal agreement over contact with the dog was ongoing. He had been told he could come and see the dog. Things kicked off fairly rapidly."

Dundee Waterfront has a new temporary attraction for the October school holidays – offering people a bird’s-eye view of the city.

A big wheel has arrived at Slessor Gardens for the duration of the mid-term break, which starts on Friday and runs for a fortnight.

The wheel caught the eyes of locals on Thursday night as it was illuminated.

The new splash pool at nearby Waterfront Place, which has its own lights display, added to the colourful sight.

The ferris wheel will be taken down following the holidays before returning to the Waterfront in late November for the new WinterFest celebrations over Christmas.

An ice rink and festive village will also be set up in the city centre as part of those events.

Opening times for big wheel
The wheel opens to the public at 3pm on Friday (October 8) as school pupils across Dundee finish up for their October break.

It will then be open from noon to 9pm Monday to Thursday, and 11.30am to 9.30pm Friday to Sunday, until October 24.

Quick thinking Aberdeen heroes help save residents from burning Dundee flats

Talwinder Singh and Irfan Bashir from Aberdeen helped people escape the blaze in Albert Street.

After seeing smoke billowing from a block of flats in Dundee, two men from Aberdeen knew they had to act quickly.

A fire broke out in a ground floor flat on Albert Street at around 11.30am on Tuesday.

Talwinder Singh and Irfan Bashir were among several people who went to the aid of those who were in the flat.

They were driving past the flat when they saw signs of the fire.

Mr Bashir said: “We saw smoke coming out from the window and parked our car outside. A man came out of the window on to the street and shouted that there was a fire.

“We managed to get a fire extinguisher from the neighbouring shops to help put out the fire.

“It grew very quickly and the flames came very high. There was a boy and girl in their late 20s who managed to get out.

“There was another person as well, who I think managed to escape through the back of the building.”
Mr Sigh spoke of how the pair scrambled to grab fire extinguishers from a shop across the road.

He said: “We got two small fire extinguishers from the barbers and hairdressers across the road.

“The fire looked to have started in the back and spread to the front, they must have had carpeted floors, so it spread very quickly.

“It spread within two or three minutes, and it was very big, there was lots of smoke.”

One taken to hospital
Three fire engines and several police vehicles were called to the scene in Stobswell.

Footage from the scene showed smoke pouring out the window of the tenement, near the corner with McGill Street.

One man has been taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

A bystander on the street watched as passers-by rushed to the aid of those inside the flat.

He said: “One person was spraying a fire extinguisher into one of the open windows. People were shouting ‘get out’ to whoever was inside.

“The police then arrived and took over using the extinguisher before a fire crew came on scene.

“After a couple of minutes, I started to see the orange glow of the fire as more emergency service vehicles arrived.

“There was a small black dog who was given an oxygen mask outside the property.”
‘Not being treated as suspicious’

A police spokesman said: “At around 11.40am, police and emergency services were called to a report of a fire at a flat on McGill Street, Dundee.

“One man, the householder, has been taken by ambulance to hospital as a precaution – believed to be as a result of smoke inhalation. There are no details on his condition.

“A member of the public was also treated at the scene by ambulance for smoke inhalation.

“The fire is not being treated as suspicious. There is no further police action.”

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We have three appliances in attendance at a property on Albert Street in Dundee.

“We got the call at 11.34am on Tuesday.”

Police searching for a firearm in Dundee found £12,000 worth of co***ne instead
Police hunting for a firearm in a Dundee flat ended up seizing more than £12,000-worth of co***ne.

Jamie Gaffney was involved in dealing the Class A drug from a property on the city’s Ashmore Street last year.

The 22-year-old was snared after police received information a firearm was within the address.

This turned out to be false, but the officers did not leave empty-handed after uncovering bags of white powder, scales and paraphernalia.

Gaffney, who became a father three weeks ago, was warned he faces a prison sentence after pleading guilty to the offence at Dundee Sheriff Court.

“I’ll release you on bail, but you should read nothing into that,” Sheriff Paul Brown told him.

“It’s a very serious offence and may well attract a custodial sentence.

“You should take the time you have now to put your affairs in order.”

Police stumble across drugs stash
Kiaya Thomson, Gaffney’s partner, was originally charged with dealing co***ne, but her not guilty plea was accepted by the Crown.

Fiscal depute Marie Lyons revealed how police executed a warrant after receiving information that Gaffney was in possession of a firearm.

She told the court: “Officers attended at around 9.35am.

“The accused and his partner were arrested and taken to police offices, so the property could be searched.

“From a bedroom, police recovered £320 cash, black scales containing white powder, a bag with a black bag of powder and paraphernalia and a bag containing a white substance.”

One of the bags of white substance was found to be 124.71g of co***ne with a maximum potential value of over £12,000.

The other bag containing white powder was found to be benzocaine, a cutting agent for co***ne, weighing 47.72g.

Traces of co***ne were discovered on the scales, which officers believed were used to subdivide the drug.

Firearm was ‘red herring’
Gaffney, of Melfort Place, pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of co***ne on May 14 2020 at an address on Ashmore Street.

Solicitor Jim Caird said the reports of a firearm were a “red herring” before adding no other proceedings were taken against Gaffney.

Mr Caird said it was Gaffney’s position that the value of the co***ne was far lower than the estimate provided by the Crown.

Sheriff Brown deferred sentence on Gaffney until October for reports to be prepared.

His bail order was allowed to continue.

Police probe as van loaded with garden waste spotted driving ‘erratically’ on A90 between Dundee and Perth

Police have appealed for information after a van was spotted driving “erratically” while loaded with garden waste on the A90 between Dundee and Perth.

Officers want to speak to anyone who was driving on the road near Longforgan and saw the vehicle on Thursday August 19 at around 3.55pm.

A blue Ford Transit tipper van, loaded with garden waste, was involved.

Appeal for dashcam footage
Constable Joel Wildman from the road policing unit based at Perth said: “We are appealing for witnesses who were on the road on Thursday afternoon and witnessed the manner in which this vehicle was being driven.

“In particular we would urge any motorists with dashcams to check their footage in case they have captured the vehicle on the road.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland through 101, quoting incident number 2113 of Thursday August 19.”

A man who r***d and s*xually assaulted two girls has been jailed for 11 years at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Michael Waribo, 49, attacked his first victim in Thurso, Caithness, when she was 10 years old, and also assaulted a 13-year-old girl.

He told one of the girls she would go to jail if she reported him to the authorities.

A judge told Waribo, formerly of Dundee, he had been found guilty of "appalling s*xual offences".

His offending began in May 2008 and continued until May 2019.

Waribo had earlier denied a string of charges during a trial but was convicted of four r**e offences, a crime of indecent conduct to a child and two charges of assault to the danger of victims' lives.

Sentencing Waribo, judge Lord Harrower said: "I cannot begin to express in words the damage you have done to them."

But the judge said he could acknowledge the courage the victims had shown in coming forward to give evidence against their abuser.

Lord Harrower told Waribo he had to take into account the age of the girls at the time and the psychological damage inflicted and added: "A significant custodial sentence is inevitable."

Waribo has been placed on the s*x offenders' register indefinitely.

P1s start their first day as schools across Dundee, Perth and Fife reopen

Little ones across Dundee donned new uniforms and joined the school run for the first time today.

Around 1,440 new primary 1s were welcomed into their first day as schools across the city reopened, following the summer break.

Amongst the excited youngsters is four-year-old Marley Kinghorn who is now attending Mill Of Mains Primary School.
Her mum, Cecilia Ho, 38, from Claverhouse, said: “How time flies, even just saying Marley is P1 sounds strange – it’s a new chapter for her.”

Approximately 1,600 pupils in Dundee also made the move into S1 – ahead of schools in Perth and Fife which will resume tomorrow.

In Perth 1,361 children will start P1 and there will be 1,457 pupils who make the transition into secondary school.

Joining the new P1 school kids is Sam Beatson, five, who will start St Madoes Primary School.

Meanwhile in Fife there will be around 3,750 new P1s, including triplets Kyle, Callum and Lewis Johnston, all 5 (pictured below), who will attend Kinghorn Primary School.

And around 4,335 new starts will begin S1 in high schools across The Kingdom.

Fife Council’s head of education and children’s services, Shelagh McLean, said: “For the time being schools have to continue operating as they did before the summer break.

“This is because most children in our schools are unvaccinated.

Fife Council’s head of education and children’s services, Shelagh McLean, said: “For the time being schools have to continue operating as they did before the summer break."

“This is because most children in our schools are unvaccinated."

“The government and medical community would like to see what impact the removing of restrictions is having in the wider community before taking that step in our schools and nurseries."

“This is to help us lower the risk of Covid-19 being passed on in schools and nurseries.”

Precautions in Dundee and Perth will also continue as they were before the summer holidays.

Clashes at Dundee vs Motherwell game caught on camera as clubs and cops probe incidents

It is one of the first games fans have been allowed to attend since the start of the coronavirus pandemic

Shock pictures have showed clashes at a Scots football match at the weekend.

The images circulated on social media show police, security staff and supporters apparently in the midst of struggles during the Dundee vs Motherwell League Cup Tie on Saturday at Dens Park.

Dundee were victorious over the Lanarkshire side winning 1-0 in one of the first fixtures allowing fans back in the stands since the start of the coronavirus crisis.

But the event was marred with an arrest taking place over an alleged assault on a steward.

The Since I was Young Motherwell shared pictures online showing mask clad officers and security staff from the Safe-Tay service struggling with fans.

They have claimed supporters were 'harassed' by security staff and are collecting further evidence to put to authorities.

A spokesman for the Fanzine also said the group 'categorically denied' that any assault took place on a steward.

He added: "We have been inundated with photos, videos and testimonies from supporters who attended that match on Saturday and our evidence gathering is still ongoing and formal complaints will be lodged."

Police have confirmed that a man was arrested for an alleged assault on a steward.

A 25-year old man was arrested in connection with the apparent attack on the staff member.

He was later released pending further enquiry.

The steward was uninjured.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "We can confirm that a 25-year old man was arrested within the ground for assaulting a steward.

"The steward was not injured.

"He was released pending further enquiry."

A Dundee FC spokesman said: "We are currently in discussion with the visiting club over the issues that arose before, during and after Saturday’s match.

"We are also assisting Police Scotland with their enquiries."

Police Scotland has been contacted for further comment.

Motherwell FC and Safe-Tay Security have also been contacted for comment.

South of the border, there were ugly scenes as Manchester United and Leeds supported in Manchester city centre ahead of the two local rivals meeting at Old Trafford.

Dramatic video showed chairs used as makeshift weapons as cops intervened.

‘Menacing’ Dundee care worker struck off after crumbling medication into resident’s tea

A Dundee care worker described as “menacing” has been struck off following several complaints about his behaviour towards residents.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) found that Derek Phinn was guilty of seven charges which, it said, impaired his ability to work in the profession.

The charges all related to his time working at four separate care homes in 2017.

These include Ballumbie Court, Harestane and South Grange – all in Dundee – along with Moss Park in Fort William.

Harestane Care Home, one of the homes Mr Phinn worked at.
Harestane Care Home, one of the homes Mr Phinn worked ate panel found that, while working at Ballumbie Court, Mr Phinn had “covertly administered medication” to a resident, which included crumbling medication into their tea because they had refused to take it.

Mr Phinn also incorrectly administered medication at the Harestane and South Grange homes.

‘Quite menacing’
It was further proved that Mr Phinn had been “verbally and/or physically aggressive” towards a resident.

The panel heard from a colleague who had witnessed Mr Phinn pushing a wheelchair-using resident across the room at South Grange.

In her evidence she described him as “quite menacing”.

Mr Phinn was also found guilty over failing to check a resident who had fallen out of bed, issues with administering medication orally or with a syringe, and being verbally and/or physically aggressive towards a colleague.

The panel said that “patients were put at risk of physical and emotional harm as a result of Mr Phinn’s misconduct”.

‘Nothing to suggest he was remorseful’
They added: “In addition to repeated medicines management and administration issues, repeated drug errors, the failure to escalate a patient to the GP, there was evidence before the panel of unacceptable behaviour.

“It has been found proven that Mr Phinn was verbally and physically aggressive.”

The panel also said there was nothing to “suggest that Mr Phinn was at all remorseful”.

Ballumbie Court and Moss Park are both managed by healthcare company HC-One.

A spokeswoman for HC-One said the firm “welcome the decision” by the NMC.

She said: “When HC-One colleagues first raised their concerns about the individual, we immediately contacted the external agency which employed this individual to file a complaint and specified that they were not to return to our homes.

“We followed all necessary procedures, including notifying the relevant authorities as soon as we were aware of their behaviour, and we informed the families of all residents affected.

“We will always take action against anyone who falls short of the values and high standards we expect and residents rightly deserve.”

‘Immediate action’ over claims
A spokeswoman for Barchester Healthcare, which runs South Grange, said: “At South Grange care home we expect and deliver the highest standards of care.

“Mr Phinn worked only very briefly at South Grange four years ago, and when the issues came to light, we took immediate action.

“Following our last Care Inspectorate Inspection we were rated grade five – very good.”

Priority Care, which manages Harestane, has been approached for comment.

Distraught Dundee woman’s desperate search to find missing dog

Gala has gone missing

A Dundee woman admits she is on the verge of a breakdown after a late night search failed to find her beloved pet.

Paulina Ruranska, 26, who is originally from Poland, says she is desperate to find her Bedlington terrier, Gala.

It’s believed the “shy and timid” animal could be in the Baxter Park area.

Paulina said: “I really need to find her — I am on the verge of a nervous breakdown because of this.

Search party
“There was a search party of 20 people out looking for her on Sunday night [August 15] but there was no trace.

“I think she is so afraid now and must be hiding. However, she must be tired, hungry and thirsty and I really hope that means she goes somewhere where we can find her.”

Paulina, a PhD student at St Andrews University, explained that Gala, who is five, escaped when the door to her flat in Baldovan Terrace in Stobswell was opened on Thursday August 12.

Paulina has asked people to search the Baxter Park area
Gala, who is the mother to her other dog, 18-month old Betty, only arrived at her Dundee home on August 8.

Paulina said: “Gala doesn’t know the area at all — she barely even knows me yet.

“She is very shy and timid and will be hiding.”

Paulina said that despite giving chase to Gala after she got out of the house, she couldn’t catch her.

She said: “This will be because she really doesn’t know me yet. She has been seen since but no one has been able to catch her.

“I have been out constantly looking and so many people helped me look on Sunday night but there was no sign.”

Paulina said that she now hopes that hunger will lead to Gala being found.

“I have been told that the best time to look for her is night time when she is most likely to come out.

Plan to leave food and water
“So for that reason we have a plan for Monday night that we are to leave food and water outside a home where the owners have CCTV.

“Hopefully then she will come and we will be able to get her safely returned home.”

Meanwhile, Paulina has asked anyone living in the Baxter Park area to check CCTV, dashcam, and outside areas such as sheds.

She has also put out a special plea to taxi drivers in the area.

She said: “I would ask that if anyone finds or sees her to not approach her but to call me immediately.

“She must be found and brought home safe.”

If anyone can help they can call Paulina on 07756251630.

'Game changing’ Former addict who battled Hepatitis C for 20-years opens up on life-changing treatment
The former he**in user spoke up as scientists revealed plans to rid Scotland of the killer condition in just THREE years.
A Scots dad who fought a two decade battle against hepatitis after injecting drugs with dirty needles has hailed a 'game-changing' new treatment programme.

Bosses at NHS Tayside, the Scottish Drugs Forum and researchers at the Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) and Dundee University teamed up to come up with a new blueprint to free Scotland of hepatitis C by 2024.

Recommendations include introducing a nurse-led strategy, with community testing and re-testing and services housed under one roof.

The strategy has been hailed by the Scottish Government and it is hoped to be rolled out across the UK.

Former he**in user Scott MacBlack, a 42-year-old dad from Irvine, Ayrshire, told how previous interventions did not work and it was only when he went to prison he heard about the Direct Acting Antivirals (DAA) treatment.

One pill a day for 12 weeks completely cured the condition he had been battling for 20 years.

He said: “I started taking drugs from a very early age, smoking cannabis and talking pills which then developed into the harder drugs like he**in.

“I wasn’t educated on this kind of stuff and before long I started injecting. It went on for years and I ended up in and out of prison. "In my second or third time in prison I was tested for hepatitis C and it came back positive.

“I was given interferon to begin with but the side effects made me really unwell. It was horrible and it didn’t cure me. No-one really knew what to do about it so I lived with hep C for another 20 years."

Scott added: “I felt stigmatised. Firstly, for using drugs and then also because of my hep C.

"I couldn’t be truthful about it because people didn’t know much about it back then. I got sent back to prison again and through word of mouth I heard about this new treatment Direct Acting Antivirals (DAAs), I didn’t know much about it and was sceptical.

“Finally, I chatted to one of the nurses and decided to go through with it. It was the best decision I’ve ever made.

"I didn’t have any side effects, took one tablet a day for 12 weeks and was cured.

"It was only after getting rid of it that I realised how big a weight had been lifted off my shoulders with this, both physically and mentally. The weight of feeling stigmatised for my hep C had been lifted.”

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a blood-borne disease that can seriously damage the liver and is spread mainly through blood-to-blood contact with an infected person.

It's estimated round 40% among people who inject drugs in the UK have the disease.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has set an elimination target to reduce hepatitis C transmission by 80% and deaths by 65% by 2030.

Drug deaths in Scotland are at record levels and it is hoped that this will be one plank to combat them.

Scott said: “Stuff like this should be happing. It’s getting to the people with hep C and dealing with it directly.

"It takes away the barriers for people who are using drugs and actually treating them in a way that’s accessible. With regards to peer workers, I don’t think there’s anyone better who could be doing this.

"They can relate and that gives that extra level of support so working hand in hand with professionals, there’s no better way to do this.”

The Scottish Government welcomed the findings and Public Health Minister Maree Todd said: “These recommendations will be a valuable resource as we continue to work towards our target of eliminating Hepatitis C in Scotland by 2024.”

Lead GCU researchers behind the blueprint, Professor Lawrie Elliott, Dr Gabriele Vojt and Professor Paul Flowers, now at Strathclyde University, described the research as a “game changer in the design of hepatitis C treatment programmes for those who inject drugs in Scotland and beyond”.

Professor Elliott added: “We know from previous research led by GCU that the treatment works but we have struggled to get this out to those who need it. These recommendations are a major breakthrough in getting treatment out to communities and will have a huge impact on virus elimination.”

Study co-lead and GCU Professor of Epidemiology and Population Health Sharon Hutchinson, said: “The lessons learnt from the great strides made in NHS Tayside in tackling hepatitis C are captured in the set of recommendations.

"They have shown that it is feasible to deliver specialist nurse-led treatment across multiple community-based services engaged with people who inject drugs.

“The set of recommendations will help to guide other regions and countries in efforts to rapidly scale up hepatitis C treatment in this population, as is necessary to achieve the global WHO elimination targets.”

The study was co-led by Matt Hickman, Professor in Public Health and Epidemiology and co-Director of the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Behavioural Science and Evaluation at University of Bristol, and involved experts from the University of Dundee, Public Health Scotland, and NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, with the backing of drugs charities With You and The Hepatitis C Trust.

NHS Tayside Consultant Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist and University of Dundee Professor John

Dillon said: “The goal of HCV elimination, removing the scourge of death and disease caused by HCV from our communities is within reach, but it needs coordinated action by all the players to achieve it.

"The recommendations are a useful tool to that end.”

Professor Hickman said scaling up hepatitis C testing and treatment in the community alongside harm reduction services was “critical” to prevention in the UK and achieving elimination targets.

“This is a very useful blueprint with practical suggestions for services and commissioners on how scale-up can be done – based on the successful transformation of services in NHS Tayside,” he added.

Scottish Drugs Forum CEO David Liddell welcomed the blueprint: “This type of assertive, responsive and inclusive approach

to hepatitis C testing and treatment will go a long way to helping Scotland meet its 2024 elimination target.

“The recommendations have given us an evidence base for actions around which a consensus can readily be built as they will be consistent with the experiences of stakeholders delivering services.”

'Lowlife scum' Balaclava-clad thugs caught on camera 'trying to break into' Scots garage

This is the moment two balaclava-clad thugs were spotted 'trying to break into' a Scots garage.

The creepy would-be thieves were caught on CCTV prowling outside Krypto Mapping on Smeaton Road in Dundee at around 1.30am on Tuesday, August 3.

Joe Pullar, owner of the vehicle tuning specialists, posted the footage on social media in a bid to find the pair - and the boss has labelled the duo as "lowlife scum".

The two men - wearing hoodies and balaclavas - approach the building as one shines a torch at the door.

When a sensor light comes on, the duo scamper off while one holds his hands over his face.

In a third photo they can then be seen checking out another side of the property.

One of the hooded thugs peers round the corner, but when he sees the CCTV camera he heads back to a white car - which can be seen parked with it's door lying open.

Joe, 26, told the Record: "Even though they didn't manage to take anything I'm just annoyed they think it's okay to break in to other people's things that's not theirs.

"Everyone works hard for their stuff and they think it's okay to come along and just steal it.

"They are low life scum. I would call them that to their face. I hate thieves."

The opportunists didn't manage to get into Joe's garage, but they got into a customer's car which was parked in the driveway.

Joe said: "They got into the car but they didn't take anything. They had a look in the glovebox so I think they were looking for the keys.

"Police said there's been a lot of thefts of those types of vehicles recently."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 10am on Tuesday, 3 August, 2021, police received a report of suspicious activity that had occurred within premises at the West Gourdie Industrial Estate, Smeaton Road, Dundee round 1.20 am earlier that day.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
