NEW HOME FOR DOG ABANDONED IN THE SNOW
During sub-zero temperatures in November, Bolsover and NE Derbyshire District Councils’ joint environmental health team received a call reporting a stray dog in a field in Sutton Scarsdale. One of Bolsover’s environmental health enforcement officers responded immediately, finding the dog curled up in the snow.
The council worker - who described the animal as “frozen” - identified a faint heartbeat and carried her in darkness to their van. There, the officer worked to warm the animal and then took her to an out-of-hours vets’.
At the vets’, the dog - who is just over a year old and was given the name Sky - received overnight care for severe hypothermia, dehydration and low blood sugar.
Initially she was left blinded by her ordeal. However, thankfully she has since recovered her sight.
The dog was microchipped to an address in Newcastle but it is suspected that the chip details were not updated by the current owner and Sky was abandoned.
Bolsover District Council Chief Executive Karen Hanson said, “It is great to hear that the actions of a council officer helped to save Sky’s life. The officer leapt into action as soon as they heard of the dog’s plight and provided expert care and attention.
“They said they were just doing their job, but it was a lot more than that and their dedication to helping this poor animal was second to none.”
Sky was taken to one of the council’s kennels to be looked after and has now found a new home.
The council has asked the public to help keep stray animals safe and warm by donating blankets, towels and other items. Donations can be dropped off at any of the council’s contact centres or email [email protected] to make arrangements for collection.
