Tribute to Alan Duke
Very sad to hear of Alans Passing.
My first memory of Alan was on a visit to Portrush before we lived here prior to 1979. My father took me to visit him in one of his surfboard shaping sheds. I was probably about 8 years old or so, he was glassing one of his surfboards and if I close my eyes I can still smell the resin and fibreglass. (Alan was one of Irelands first surfboard shapers.) My father was very fond of Alan and I believe he gave him his first wetsuit. After we moved to Portrush and at secondary school I met Alan again in the Art department at Dalriada where I wanted to talk about surfing and not art. I wanted to hear his stories of his surf explorations around the globe and not how to draw a pair of gym shoes for ‘O’ level art!!
(He actually encouraged me to drop the subject for ‘O’ Level as I did not share his talent at all!)
I would be in awe as a young grommet watching Alan surfing the Blackrocks . A very stylish and graceful surfer and clear stand out at our local reef break. Not only was Alan an incredible surfer (4 x Irish National Champion) but an incredible artist. I’ve always enjoyed his photo-realistic artwork and incredible talent and I’ve been collecting his work over the years. I’m very grateful for the two images he painted of me, one at my local break the Blackrocks and one from Lissadell in County Sligo. Alan Duke will be missed by so many, a true local and International Legend in the Surfing and Art World.
Some of Alan’s work is now on display in Troggs Window.
Funeral Service in Wades Funeral Home, Coleraine, on Monday at 10.30 a.m., followed by a Cremation at Antrim & Newtownabbey Crematorium.

YOUNG ONES

Last week was a special one. After being sidelined with injuries on and off for a year, it was my first full week of surfing heavier waves. As you can imagine, it felt liberating to be back in the water.

The week had everything—clean overhead waves for turns, triple-overhead Aileens, and 4ft Crab and Rileys. There were tubes, turns, big wipeouts, and tropical conditions, making it all feel like a dream.

The highlight for me was watching the groms push the limits. and .surf were at Rileys, staking their claim on the heaviest set waves. Saibh and Hazel, the youngest girls to ever tackle Rileys, went for it with everything they had. It was inspiring to bring them there, watch them get comfortable, sitting wide to observe. Twenty minutes later, I hear, ‘Ollie, can we sit in the lineup?’ I knew they’d catch a few waves, and they did.

A special shoutout to , who got some sick rides at the Cliffs, Noah putting on a clinic, and Tommy G owning it on the boog. It was also great to see familiar faces like Dylan Noonan and Finnbob Richardson, both former Irish junior champs, charging all week and proving they haven’t lost their spark.
