SCOTLAND ICON DENIS LAW PASSES AWAY AT THE AGE OF 84

Manchester United legend Denis Law passed away today, it was announced by his family. A statement from Law's family read: "It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace.

"We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you."

Law played for 11 seasons at Manchester United, winning two League titles and the European Cup, and scored 237 goals in 404 games for the club. He also played 79 games for Manchester City, scoring 37 goals. He was part of the renowned Manchester United holy trinity alongside George Best and Bobby Charlton. Arguably one of his most famous goals was a backheel shot for Manchester City in a 1-0 win over United, which was symbolic of United being relegated in the 1973-74 season.

For Scotland Law scored 30 goals in 55 games, a record which still stands to this day (tied by Kenny Dalglish in 1986). Law is the only Scottish footballer to have won the Ballon D'Or, he did so in 1964 when the award was solely for European footballers.

The stage is set for the start of the Grand Slam tennis season as Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) steps up to screen live and exclusive coverage of every match from every court at the Australian Open on its streaming platforms Max and discovery+*.

In addition to 250 hours of premium live television coverage on Eurosport, produced in 20 languages for 50 markets across Europe, WBD will also harness its free-to-air channels to scale live action from selected matches, including the singles finals, to even more fans in Germany (Eurosport 1), Denmark (Kanal 5), Sweden (Kanal 9), Finland (TV5) and Norway (Rex)**.

Eurosport has assembled a cast of tennis experts who will be on-site to bring viewers closer to the major stories and players competing. Star names include double Australian Open (AO) singles champion Jim Courier who will feature as part of Eurosport’s international coverage for the first time. He joins seven-time Grand Slam singles champion John McEnroe, AO mixed doubles finalist Barbara Schett and Olympic silver medallist Laura Robson as Eurosport’s eyes and ears at Melbourne Park.

Enhancing Eurosport’s expansive live coverage of every court, new and exclusive original documentaries have also launched on Max and discovery+ including Rafael Nadal: King of Paris, which tells the story of his unmatched 14 Roland-Garros titles, and John McEnroe: The Racket, which reexamines his controversial default at the 1990 Australian Open where he became the first player to be ejected from the tournament in more than 30 years.

On-demand streaming of Forza Sinner and the Rise of Italian Tennis, the documentary charting Jannik Sinner’s maiden Grand Slam win at the 2024 Australian Open is also available alongside an official Australian Open preview and 2024 tournament highlights as part of the road to Melbourne.

Additionally, Eurosport’s suite of digital platforms, including its 12 local language Eurosport.com sites and its social media platforms, will carry complementary highlights content and offer the very best short video content across the tournament for all to enjoy.

The 2025 Australian Open sparks an intriguing new Grand Slam season with young stars Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz looking to extend their majors records after sharing two Slams apiece last year. Ten-time AO champion Novak Djokovic also returns to Melbourne in his quest for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title with long-time rival Andy Murray joining him in his first coaching role. In the women’s draw, Iga Swiatek will be battling to reclaim her world number one status from Aryna Sabalenka who begins her title defence at the AO as the top seed.

In 2024, viewers in Europe showed an insatiable appetite for tennis as Eurosport achieved its biggest ever Australian Open audience in its 35-year history. This followed Italy’s Jannik Sinner winning his maiden Grand Slam title as WBD’s streaming coverage of the tournament grew in every market in Europe alongside television audiences rising by a quarter compared to the previous tournament.

Live sports such as tennis is central to WBD’s content offer as it accelerates its global streaming strategy by rolling out Max in new markets, including the UK, Italy and Germany in 2026. A truly remarkable finish sees Dundee United score 2 goals right at the death to win 3-2. Goals in the 93rd and 99th minute earned Dundee United a spectacular comeback win over the Edinburgh side, who continue to struggle near the foot of the table.

The scenes which followed the winner were utterly shameful. A pitch invasion at any time is senseless, but in the 8th game of the season is scandalous. Thankfully and very fortunately no serious injuries.

NEWS: Sports fandom on track to generate £13bn a year for the UK economy

Sports fans are estimated to generate an additional £3 billion a year for the UK economy by 2034, rising from £10 billion in 2023

*New research shows there could be an additional 10 million new UK sports fans in the next 10 years*

*Adults spent approximately 9.1 billion hours watching and playing sports in the last year

*Every day in 2023, Sky Sports underpinned over £10 million of UK economic activity, totalling almost £4 billion across the year

The nation of passionate sports fans is estimated to generate £13 billion for the UK economy in 2034, according to new research into the impact of the sporting ecosystem by Public First, commissioned by Sky**.

As more people than ever before tune into sports, a new report, Game Changing: How sport makes us happier, healthier and better connected unveils that Sky Sports injected around £18 billion into UK sports over the past decade. This underpinned over £10 million of economic activity a day in the last year alone, as well as contributing hundreds of millions to the long-term development of grassroots sports.

Dana Strong, Group CEO, Sky said: “Sport is an invaluable part of our society. It builds stronger communities, promotes inclusivity and enhances our national pride. At Sky, we’re incredibly proud of our role in the sector – over the next decade, our goal is to help bring millions more fans across all sections of our society to the benefits of sport. With continued focus on innovation, participation, and investment from every part of the ecosystem, including government, sport can continue to unlock greater social and economic benefits for the UK.”

Key findings from Game Changing: How sport makes us happier, healthier and better connected

Sports catalyses economic growth

In 2023 alone, Public First estimates that Sky Sports underpinned almost £4 billion in economic activity in the UK. This is equivalent to over £10 million a day.

Fans bring spending power when they watch or play sports, generating regional economic activity as they support local businesses. The enhanced footfall increases revenue in bars and pubs, with Sky Sports generating an estimated £1.1 billion extra revenue for British pubs last year alone, equivalent to 230 million pints of beer.

Broadcasters bring sports to more people
Sports broadcasters play a pivotal role in supporting the industry, with Sky injecting around £18 billion into UK sports in the last decade. Rights deals take fans to the next best seat in the house with better coverage, while facilitating critical revenue for sports organisations.

Sky’s commitment has been particularly important for women’s sports, being home to over 70% of all televised women’s sports in 2023. Two in five UK adults now watch more women’s sports as a result of high-quality sports broadcasting - and the report estimates that 30 million UK adults watched a women’s sports match last year.

UK is a nation of sports fans
The nation dedicates considerable time and energy to sports. In 2023, UK adults spent approximately 9.1 billion hours, or almost 2.5 hours a week, watching and playing sports. In the last year, Sky Sports saw 26.7 million people tuned into sports on their TV.

The research also found that two in three adults actively describe themselves as a sports fan, and a quarter go as far as to say that sports is an important part of their identity.

Watching sports has a profound impact on fans
Watching sports was also found to have a profound impact on the nation’s health, inspiring UK adults to do a staggering 3.6 billion hours of additional exercise in 2023 alone. Additionally, 54% said that playing, watching or being a fan of sports has had a positive impact on their mental health, rising to 65% of men.

The shared experience of following sports helps fans to feel more connected. Last year alone, UK adults sent an estimated 558 million messages about sports per month, making 62 million new social connections over a year.

Amy Price, Director at Public First, said: “Whether casual spectators or life-long devotees, billions of people across the country find joy in sport. Our research demonstrates that sport helps us to feel happier, healthier, and better connected to our communities, whilst catalysing significant economic growth across the country. We estimate that fans grew the UK economy by almost £10 billion in 2023 and, with the right conditions, UK sport has the potential to soar even higher over the coming decade.”

The full research and findings can be found in the full report available to view here https://skysports.publicfirst.co.uk/

RUGBY - Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup: Fiji claim sixth title

Fiji put in a dominant second-half performance to silence the Hanazono Rugby Stadium crowd and claim a 41-17 victory against Japan and record-stretching sixth Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup title after Samoa had beaten USA 18-13 to finish third.

Fiji put in a dominant second-half performance to silence the Hanazono Rugby Stadium crowd and claim a record-stretching sixth Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup title.

Home hopes were raised when Japan centre Dylan Riley scored a brilliant solo try at the end of the first quarter of the final, but Fiji responded in emphatic fashion.

Vuate Karawalevu (twice), Ponipate Loganimasi (twice) and Albert Tuisue each crossed the whitewash as the Flying Fijians surged to a 41-17 victory and their first Pacific Nations Cup crown since 2018.

The margin of victory also ensures that Fiji will climb above Australia and into ninth when the World Rugby Men’s Rankings are updated at 12 noon (GMT+1) on Monday.

Japan, meanwhile, will slip beneath Samoa, who beat USA 18-13 in the third-place play-off earlier on Saturday, to 14th in the rankings.

Fiji 41-17 Japan
Seungsin Lee and Caleb Muntz traded early penalties before the final exploded into life with a moment of magic from Brave Blossoms centre Dylan Riley in the 20th minute.

Having stepped inside three attempted tacklers and shrugged off a couple more, Riley chipped the ball over the covering defender and won the race to the bouncing ball to dot down.

Lee added the conversion but if the home fans hoped the try would signal the start of a dominant period for Japan, then they were to be disappointed.

Fiji thought they had their first try of the match in the 31st minute as Inia Tabuavou crashed over from close range, only for TMO Damon Murphy to spot an earlier knock on from Tuisue.

The Pacific Islanders had to wait less than 60 seconds to cross the whitewash however, and centre Tabuavou was again involved. His skilful hack on, after Japan captain Harumichi Tatekawa’s grubber had been blocked by Eroni Mawi, fell perfectly for winger Vuate Karawalevu to kick on and score. Muntz added the extras to level the scores.

That is how the score remained at half-time, although the hosts headed into the changing rooms a player light after ho**er Mamoru Harada was shown a yellow card.

Japan stood firm in their 10 minutes with 14 players, albeit Fiji number eight Elia Canakaivata had a try ruled out for an earlier obstruction. And as the half wore on, Fiji’s bench proved decisive as their replacements made a real impact in the final 30 minutes.

Player of the Tournament Muntz stretched the Fijian lead with another penalty before a lovely team move created the space for replacement winger Loganimasi to score in the right corner.

Fly-half Muntz converted from out wide to give his side a 10-point lead and then produced a stunning 50/22 to give Fiji an attacking platform when they had been on the back foot.

Minutes later, Tuisue burrowed over from close range despite the attention of several Japanese defenders before an outrageous offload from flanker Kitione Salawa released Karawalevu to score his second of the night.

Loginamasi stepped around an attempted tackle from full-back Lee to add an exclamation mark to his impressive performance off the bench, before Japan winger Malo Tuitama gave the home crowd something to cheer with a consolation try late on.

WINTERSPORTS 2024/25: World Cup season opener Cardrona slopestyle ready to roll on Friday and Saturday

The first competition of the 2024/25 FIS Snowboard Park & Pipe World Cup season is coming up this weekend, as we have returned to Cardrona Alpine Resort in New Zealand for slopestyle action as part of the 2024 Winter Games NZ.

While a variable weather forecast means that programme changes may be necessary in the coming days, as it stands right now we are looking forward to qualifications leading off the action in Cardrona on Friday 30 August, with men’s heat one at 9:00 local time, heat two at 11:30, and the women’s qualifications at 14:00.

Originally planned for Sunday, women’s and men’s finals have been bumped up to Saturday 31 August to take advantage of the best weather window of the weekend, with the start time still to-be-determined.

Qualifications and finals will be livestreamed on FIS TV and the FIS Snowboard YouTube channel, as well as on the Winter Games NZ website and YouTube channel.

This week marks five years since the FIS Snowboard World Cup was last on the scene here in Cardrona for big air action, while it has been seven years since the last slopestyle World Cup competition at the venue - though there have been plenty of Australia New Zealand Cup competitions and last year’s Junior World Championships for big air and slopestyle here in Cardrona in recent seasons.

So, while the weather is looking tough for the weekend, the experienced crew here in Cardrona will do everything possible to make this weekend’s competitions a success.

And, of course, so too will the riders, as there’s a heavy roster of rippers on hand here in Cardrona looking to get the season - and the Milano-Cortino 2026 Olympic qualification period - started on the right foot.

For the women that means the likes of New Zealand’s own Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, reigning World Champion and X Games winner Mia Brookes of Great Britain, Austria’s inimitable Anna Gasser, Kokomo Murase, Reira Iwabuchi and Mari Fukada of the strong Japanese team, and Hailey Langland should be front and centre over the next couple days of action.

Over on the men’s side things, with Marcus Kleveland and Mons Roisland of Norway, the USA’s Red Gerard and Dusty Henricksen, China’s Su Yiming, Taiga Hasegawa, Ryoma Kimata and Hiroaki Kunitake of Japan, Canada’s Cameron Spalding, Korean triple threat Chaeung Lee, and whole slew of others on hand and ready to throw down, things should be very heavy indeed here at the 2024/25 season opener.

It’s all set to begin tomorrow at 9:00am local time, so grab a snack, cue up your livestream platform of choice, stay tuned to our social channels for updates, and get ready to get the snowball rolling on a another season of FIS Park & Pipe World Cup snowboard action.
