Lagos fire: China-based trader, two others found dead in Balogun Market inferno
A China-based clothier, identified simply as Obum, has been recovered dead alongside two other adultsâa man and a womanâfrom the rubble of the Great Nigeria Insurance House Plaza, which was ravaged by fire at Balogun Market on Lagos Island.
The fire reportedly broke out on the fourth floor of the 25-storey building on Wednesday and spread to the sixth floor before engulfing other floors and adjoining structures. During the inferno, a detached section of the plaza collapsed, trapping traders and market assistants.
A source within the emergency agency said the two male bodies were recovered on Fridayâone at about 11:03am and the other around 12:03pm.
Confirming Obumâs identity, a trader at the market, Zacheaus Afolayan, said the deceased was one of those recovered. According to him, Obumâs body was later released to his family and taken to Anambra State for burial.
Afolayan said Obum was evacuating his goods when the structure collapsed. âHis shop is behind the plaza. He had moved almost all his goods as the fire spread and went back to pick the last items when the weakened section of the building collapsed on his store,â he said.
He added that Obum contacted him from beneath the rubble in the early hours of Thursday, confirming he was still alive at the time. âHe called around 2am and said he was not the only one trapped. He pleaded that we should not let him die, saying his children had no one else to care for them. He lives in China and only comes home during festive periods to trade,â Afolayan recounted.
According to him, Obum called again later on Thursday but sounded much weaker.
Meanwhile, families of other victims believed to be trapped under the rubble have appealed for increased support and equipment for emergency responders working at the scene.
