M0MCY QRP operations

M0MCY QRP operations This page is about the QRP (low power) operations of Mike Rolph M0MCY both at home and portable

20/09/2023

I have not posted on here recently as I have only been able to operate from home due to health reasons and with the poor conditions and my compromise antenna I have had to use the amp and run 30w. I did try the KX3 at home running 10w and made a few contacts this month so will post again at the end of the month.

Well that's another month flown past and not bad considering the conditions, several outings to activate WWFF & POTA all qrp and 76 contacts from home some of which have been 4w though had to put the amp on and go at 30w for some when 4 was not being heard. Unfortunately my home antenna is not the best and with a combination of tiny garden and overhead power cables it is the best I can do. Now for a new month and a new QRP challenge, let's hope the bands pick up

Thanks to all who called me today @ GFF-0286. 63 logged in just under 2 hours on air with 3 pk to pk and best contact KD1CT. The big vertical worked very well with 30 on 40m 1/4 wave and 33 on 20m half wave end fed. Running the kx3 @10 w and at times getting 5&9+ reports showed how well it worked.
Will try it out at other references as and when I can. Logs uploaded and on EQSL.

Back home after my short activation of GFF-0236, conditions were not good but managed 20 contacts on 40 and 20m with the kx3 and my vertical antenna so happy with that.
Sorry to those I could not pull out of the noise and the qsb.
Hopefully get you another time

Last months logs now completed and using the special call MR0MCY from home and MR0MCY/p for activations I made 98 QSO's with the home station and a further 76 out portable running the kx3 at 10w with the Slidewinder antenna. Foir me a good result.
Thanks to all who called me.

Today I went to GFF-0236 Lount nature reserve for a couple of hours, Conditions were very bad and running 10w from the kx3 through the superslider antenna I managed 18 contacts on 40 and 20 meters ssb using the call MR0MCY/p, hopefully I can return later in the year when conditions are better.

Nice trip to Charnwood Lodge NNR GFF-0430 this morning 55 in the log with 3 pk to pk using the KX3 @ 10w through the superslider antenna
Pictures on the WWFF page.

I continue to make contacts from my home station using the special call MR0MCY
and a large number of them have been with just 4w in spite of the poor band conditions.

04/05/2023

Nice portable Activation of Calke park NNR yesterday afternoon in very poor band conditions using special call MR0MCY/P. 28 in the log all on kx3 @ 10w

05/04/2023

Well last month was a good one for actual contacts but only around half of them were qrp as conditions were so difficult from here at times so ran 30w on the others. I made over 130 contacts in the month including a short activation of GFF-0286 from my home station right in the middle of the national forest. hopefully this month solar flares permitting the amp will not be needed and I can once again enjoy the challenge of low power operation using my customary 4w.

01/03/2023

Well I ended up with 104 contacts in February in spite of solar flares. When conditions were really bad I had to turn on my little chines amp and run 30w but about 3/4 of my contacts were on 4w so happy with that. Now let's see what March brings. 😀

24/02/2023

Just under 100 contacts this month and 76 have been

A good day today for QRP operating, 9 in the the log mostly with 5 & 7 to 5 & 9 reports on 4w. I did have to turn the amp on for one late in the day as the band had got noisy so 30w for the last one which was on a sked so did not like to miss it.😀😀

01/02/2023

Well first Month of the new year has come and gone with 85 in the log from home, about 6 of them were using 30 w but the rest qrp, I only turn on the little amp after trying on 4w which usually is good enough for me unless the bands are very noisy.
All in all a good start to the new year🙂

29/01/2023

Normally I am using 4w at home these days and getting good signal reports but when the bands are very noisy my signal is often below the noise floor, so for these occasions though it goes against the grain with me I have bought a small Chinese amp which puts out 30w. This is only used after calling multiple times on 4w though and so far has been switched on 4 times in this month.

02/01/2023

December was a disappointing month for QRP contacts due to circumstances at home, Only 37 logged. But every one enjoyed and now a fresh start with a new year.
Happy new year to all and may you all have good health and happiness.
Hopefully a bit later in the year I may be able to get out portable again if my health and conditions here improve

01/12/2022

Throughout the month of November I managed 81 QRP contacts from home, still no chance of getting out portable but I was very happy with that number with my little station. Most of them were WWFF activators and chasers often cracking a pile up against much more powerful stations. Now looking forward to December and hoping for another successful month.

02/11/2022

During the month of October, I managed to make 96 QRP contacts throughout Europe from my home station, this was done in spare moments between supporting my wife in her role of caring for her Mum. I had hope to get out portable but due to inclement weather and other commitments this never happened but satisfied with what I managed. I had also hoped to do some recordings of QSO's but due to the fact I use a headset this has not been possible but will try a work around for this.
Hopefully in November I will manage to get out and possibly do some recordings.

25/10/2022

This month so far I have made 47 contacts, mostly with portable stations and all with good reports. Just shows what you can do with 5w and a compromise antenna!

17/10/2022

Today I managed 4 contacts from home in between doing other things and had aa nice chat with Tom G2NY on 40 meters, Tom lives about 25 miles away and was running 400w, I gave him a good 5&9+ signal report and he gave my 5w a 5&6 and made the comment that there was little QSB on my signal whereas folks slightly further away did have some fading. A nice contact

Welcome to my page which is all about my experiences with Qrp operating both at home and out portable.
At home I use an Elad fdm duo sdr transceiver running 5w through a multiband inverted L antenna and portable an Elecraft KX3 at 5-10 w and various antennas.
I do not get out as often as I would like due to circumstances at home.
