Resilient Hedgehog has produced a special edition of its illustrated stories for children (3-8 years) called THE NIGHTINGALE AND THE BEAR.

It tells a story of a bully (the Bear - a symbol of Russia) and a Nightingale (the national animal of Ukraine) and how, with friends, a smaller party can deal with an aggressor.

It is also about learning why it is important to stand up for yourself, for others and for issues that really matter to you. At one level this is a story about bullying. At another it uses the events of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 to help parents make sense of events like these with their children.

This book has been made possible by the generous contribution of time, skills and resources from a remarkable group of people, including a talented team of illustrators which include two young children from the Ukraine and Switzerland.

All involved recognise that aggressive behaviour towards another – whether a person, a group or a country/race – is wrong. The world is a much better place if we all live in harmony. This is a vital lesson for all young children – they are the next generation who will dictate how we live together in the future.

At one level this is a story about bullying. At another it uses the events of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 to help parents make sense of events like these with their children.

The book, published on June 1, addresses important issues which can often confuse and frighten.

All contributors gave their time freely to this project. Many were professional illustrators who welcomed to their ranks two young people who also wanted to contribute their artwork to this cause.

One is Seweryn Hrytsenko, aged 13, a young Ukrainian displaced by the war there and now sheltering in Canada.

The other is Virag Sardi, 10, Hungarian based in Switzerland who felt moved by the situation in the Ukraine to want to make her own contribution in this way.

All involved recognise that aggressive behaviour towards another – whether a person, a group or a country/race – is wrong. The world is a much better place if we all live in harmony. This is a vital lesson for all young children – they are the next generation who will dictate how we live together in the future.

I read the book to my class yesterday and they really liked it! The children really enjoyed discussing their attitude and how it can affect others, this tied in really nicely with our PSHE lesson from the previous day. We finished off by discussing any goals we have and how we can meet them (the children used words such as determination, resilience and positivity in their sentences).

CEO Doug Strycharczyk was delighted to meet with Wojtek Mijakowslki who is a senior manager at Interak which have printed these remarkable books. Beautifully illustrated, they are designed to help users explore each story to learn about important life skills. April saw the launch of the Resilient Creatures series of books at the London Book Fair. Developed by Resilient Hedgehog a division of global consultancy AQR International, the books are carefully designed to provide a resource for busy parents and teachers to work with their children in developing mindset and attitude using the well evidenced 4Cs Mental Toughness framework. The stories are carefully designed to engage children ,with beautiful illustrations, together with support materials in the books and on an accompanying website.
