Why do people volunteer for Blood Bikes?

Ask ten Blood Bike volunteers why they got involved and you’ll probably hear ten different stories.

Some love motorcycles or driving.

Some wanted to give something back.

Some have personal experience of the NHS.

Some enjoy answering the phones and coordinating a busy shift.

Some organise events, carry collection buckets or work behind the scenes making sure everything happens.
And some simply wanted to use their spare time to do something worthwhile.

Whatever their role, underneath all of those reasons is something shared:

The desire to help.

Riders, drivers, controllers, fundraisers, trustees and behind-the-scenes volunteers all contribute to making Blood Bikes possible.

Ordinary people giving their time to help people they will probably never meet.

That’s what makes this service special.

We have seized an illegally modified bicycle during a foot patrol in Buckhurst Field.

PC Goode and PC Kimber responded to reports of a male riding an e-bike in the area and they swiftly located, detained and arrested the suspect.

They discovered that the bike had been illegally modified into an electric motorcycle and the suspect was arrested on suspicion of driving without insurance or a driving licence.

PC Goode, of Swindon Response Team 3B, said: “An electric bike is illegal to ride on public roads, cycle lanes or paths if it exceeds a 250W continuous power output, provides electric assistance past 15.5 mph or operates via a twist throttle without requiring the rider to pedal.

"Illegal e-bikes are an ongoing issue in the area, and we will take a robust approach to their use. This bike on this occasion has been seized and will be destroyed.”

Our appeal to parents and guardians is to take note of the legislation as we are seeing an increase in young people riding illegal, modified bikes.

Please be aware that statutory age limits apply and parents/guardians can be held accountable or face a fine if their young person is caught operating an illegal motor vehicle in public.

The penalty for driving without insurance alone is six penalty points and a fine, which would result in a ban for provisional licence holders or substantive licence holders if the offence is committed within two years of passing their test.

Help Protect The Wilts & Berks Canal at Chippenham

We have just received information that developers are looking to build around 1200 houses on land to the north and north-west of Pewsham Locks at Chippenham. As a charity The Trust is always neutral on these matters however we do look to protect our interests i.e. the protection of the original canal line and the restoration of the canal.
The developers talk about Biodiversity and Sustainability and Nature however not once do they mention The Wilts & Berks Canal, despite the fact that the suggested development cuts across line of the canal.

They are asking for feedback and The Trust, and myself, would appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to complete this stating that if the development does go ahead then the canal should be included in their development plan. Some of the things you may consider are:
• Preserving local heritage.
• Boosting tourism and the local economy
• Creating recreational opportunities e.g. walking and cycling routes, boating opportunities, nature observations
• Supporting Wildlife and Biodiversity: Canals can act as wildlife corridors, linking habitats and providing homes for birds, insects, fish and aquatic plants. Restoration plans include biodiversity management and aim for habitat enhancement and biodiversity net gain.
• Educational Benefits: The canal provides opportunities for learning about Local History, Industrial Archaeology, Engineering, Environmental Science, Conservation.
• Community Pride and Volunteering: The restoration project has involved hundreds of volunteers over many years. Continued restoration strengthens community involvement, develops practical skills and gives residents a shared goal that improves the local area. Recent work at Pewsham Locks demonstrates the commitment of local volunteers.
If you value your local canal and wish to see it continue to thrive and develop for all the community then please ensure you have your say.
