God sees your heart and knows that you love him – and that’s all that matters. You have your unique pathway that is completely different from anybody else’s. God loves you as you are.

Be prepared for the unexpected. Many people find it helpful to read the Bible, the day’s scripture readings or books on prayer, but sometimes reading material or music which apparently have nothing to do with God, religion or prayer can unexpectedly stimulate very deep prayer. For instance, I remember watching Fantine in Les Miserables & praying for days for people who find their love and faithfulness isn’t returned to the same degree. Equally, Charlie Landsborough’s recording of “Love you every second” always stops me in my tracks.

Leave space for God. God has a habit of appearing unexpectedly during the day. St Teresa of Avila said that she often found God “amongst the pots and pans” as she worked in the kitchen. The late Archbishop of Canterbury, Michael Ramsay, once remarked that each of us has “a God-shaped emptiness” that only God can fill. Thank of yourself as the keyhole & God as the key.

“Come as you are.” Prayer isn’t just for people who “feel” holy. It’s for people who are happy, sad, frustrated, angry, bored, interested, excited, peaceful, overworked and underpaid… God knows who we are and loves us as we are. There’s no point in pretending to be someone we’re not. Prayer allows us to be completely open and honest with God, who will meet us where we are. That’s true even if you’re cross with him. St Teresa of Avila was on a very long journey when she was tipped out of the horse-drawn carriage into a river. She was soaked through to the skin – and she was furious with God. “If that’s how you treat your friends”, she said, “it’s no wonder you have so few of them!” (God probably saw the joke!)

Don’t work too hard at prayer. A visitor carried several heavy books into the chapel and declared – in all seriousness, “I’m praying about ‘God as light’”. A sleep scientist recently said to “allow yourself to fall asleep instead of trying to go to sleep – which is guaranteed to keep you awake.” The same thing applies to prayer. Remember the old man who said, “I look at God & God looks at me.” You and God will find each other & if you are blank, that’s okay. People who love each other often sit in silence, enjoying each other’s company.
