Derbyshire council is set to decide whether to rebuild a new bungalow at the site of a terrible gas explosion which destroyed the original property and left an elderly man seriously injured before he died in hospital.
Pensioner Nigel Barrow, aged 78, was airlifted and taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital after the explosion at the end-of-terrace property on Ollersett Avenue, in New Mills, in Derbyshire’s High Peak, on November 14, last year, before he died three days later on Friday, November 17, 2023.

High Peak Borough Council’s development control committee is due to consider whether to ‘reinstate’ the demolished property on the same site with a reconstructed bungalow with two bedrooms and a restored back garden.

A council spokesperson stated: “The site comprises a residential plot situated on the northern side of Ollersett Avenue, in New Mills.

“The bungalow has since been demolished after a gas explosion in November, 2023.”

Fire crews from New Mills, Glossop, Whaley Bridge and Buxton along with a command support unit attended the incident with police officers, the ambulance service and an air ambulance with staff from gas distribution network company Cadent.

Police confirmed that 78-year-old Nigel Barrow suffered life-threatening injuries during the incident and was taken to hospital where he later died.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service stated that 12 properties in the area had to be evacuated during the incident and other residents living nearby were asked to keep their doors and windows closed as a precaution.

High Peak Borough Council set up a rest centre for residents at New Mills Leisure Centre and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service revealed that some were provided temporary overnight accommodation but everyone has since returned to their homes.

Nearby homes were evacuated during the incident.
Firefighters worked alongside emergency partners from Derbyshire Constabulary, Derbyshire County Council, East Midlands Ambulance Service and Cadent Gas to help make the area safe, according to the fire service.

Shortly after the incident, High Peak Borough Council Leader, Cllr Anthony McKeown, said the council was ‘saddened’ and the council’s thoughts were with the deceased’s family and friends, and that the council was taking a full role in investigations to determine the cause.

The council has stated that reinstating the bungalow will provide affordable housing which would be let by the council and which will help address a need by providing suitable accommodation for older people. It aims to let the property to couples or individuals aged over 55 and the bungalow will be fitted with a carelink service.

The council has recommended the bungalow be ‘reinstated’ subject to conditions and the development control committee is expected to make a decision at a meeting on August 19.

United Utilities seem to have removed the road closed signs at Hayfield end of New Mills Road ... THE ROAD IS MOST DEFINITELY STILL SHUT AT HIGH HILL THOUGH! Workmen said it's because sinkhole worksite is being handed over to different utility/contractor/DCC and they have to put their own signs out!

New data has highlighted the areas across Derbyshire where the most homes will need to be built under Labour’s housing drive.
Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister, has proposed new top-down housing targets for local councils - which will see hundreds more homes being built across Derbyshire.

Before the general election, Labour had pledged to deliver 1.5million new homes across the country over the next five years.

Ms Rayner told MPs that her planned new method for creating housing targets for different local authorities would include an ‘uplift where house prices are most out of step with local incomes'.

For the High Peak:
Homes to be built under existing proposal: 243. Homes to be built under revised proposal: 585. Average number of home built each year, between 2020/21 and 2022/23: 352. High Peak needs to build 1.7 times more houses than what they are currently managing to keep on pace with Labour’s new targets.

A man who stabbed his wife multiple times before locking her in the family home and fleeing the scene has been convicted of attempted murder.

Mark Taylor attacked his partner with such force that the knife he was using snapped. The 57-year-old then grabbed a second knife and continued stabbing her before demanding she hand over her phone to him, saying he would call an ambulance for her.

He then said ‘this will be the end of you’ before locking the doors to the house in Baslow and driving away with the couple’s teenage son.

His wife tried to get help by shouting out of the letterbox before crawling up the stairs and shouting out of the front bedroom window, managing to catch the attention of a passing dog walker who alerted emergency services.

She suffered stab wounds to her neck, arm, chest and stomach and was taken to hospital for treatment after the attack, which happened on 15 February.

Taylor was found guilty today (15 August) after a trial at Derby Crown Court. He will be sentenced at a later date.

Temporary Detective Constable Amber Holmes, who led the investigation, said: “This was a ferocious and sustained attack by Taylor on his wife who genuinely feared she was going to die.

“After this incident she disclosed to police that she had been suffering from domestic abuse at the hands of her husband for around 40 years including a previous incident involving a knife.

“It’s clear from the history and the actions of Taylor on this day that he posed a very real threat to his wife.

“This could have so easily been a fatal attack and it is very fortunate that she survived this incident. However while her physical injuries may have started to heal, the emotional and mental impact will remain with her for many years to come.“

APPEAL:
Derbyshire Constabulary are appealing for the public’s help to try and identify the person pictured after former High Peak MP Robert Largan’s office was vandalised.

While the police understand that the face of the person is not visible it is hoped that someone may recognise the distinctive red and black face covering worn.

📚 NEW MILLS CHILDRENS BOOK HUNT 📚

I’m currently organising a community book hunt for kids to take part in this summer to get them out & about in the gorgeous sunshine, hunting for books and finding joy in reading.

The book hunt will be taking place at the end of this month and I’ve already got over 200 books to hide thanks to the very kind sponsorship of some very generous local businesses 😍

If you have a little one who would like to take part in the book hunt, be sure to Like & Follow this page as all updates & clues will be shared on here once the books have been hidden.

If your little one finds a book, they get to take it home to read & either keep it OR re-hide it for someone else to find 🥰

There’s also still lots of space for businesses to sponsor books so if you’d like to get involved in supporting the community & putting more books into kids hands this summer, drop me a message and I can send through all the details (£1 per book or sponsor 50 books for £40) 🖤

I hope to see you out book-hunting very soon! 🥰📚

Can you help track the 3 lads and help get the bike back.

3 males in balaclavas and black track suites heading towards Whaleybridge last night on the canal route between Bridgemont and Whaley Bridge. Sadly they pulled a big hunting knife out , this took place Monday 12th August 2024. Many use this track towards tesco and back. Please keep your eyes out and report to Derbyshire police.

A bit of a stink has been kicked up on London Road in this afternoon.
Raw sewage coming up covering the A515 outside Haddon Hall Care Home.
With recent issues in a question needs to be asked about investment in our roads, plus of course the current 95,000 recorded potholes in Derbyshire
