In the words of Esquire, Hole & Corner 'heads a new genre of publications combining the rich visuals of style magazines with more thoughtful content.'

Devoted to uncovering stories that celebrate craft, beauty, passion and skill, Hole & Corner is all about recognising what's important in life and dedicating time to explore it to the full: finding those spaces where creativity and inspiration can flow. It's about people who spend more time 'doing' than talking about it.

N THE STUDIO WITH… Noe Kuremoto ()

Kuremoto is known for her playful sculptural work that takes the form of functional wares. Her collection of ceramic Dogu Ladies is a salute to working mothers and mix child-like simplicity with contemporary sophistication.

We caught up with Kuremoto to discuss how she juggles working in both her London and Lithuanian studio while raising a young family…

Can you tell us a little bit about your studio (where is it located, how long have you been there etc)?

I am originally from Japan and I came to study Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College in 90’s. I have lived in London for over 25 years. I currently run 2 studios. My London studio is in Hackney. I think it used to be a cotton thread factory and now converted into artists’ studios. When I moved to Hackney 20 years ago, this was completely different place! It was really rough but buzzing with artists’ community. (There was no fancy Vegan food market, restaurants nor bars back then! Full of graffiti, no East London line so it changed heaps.) Plus it was very cheap to find a large warehouse studio so I was sold! My other studio is in the deep forest of Lithuania. Totally different from my urban London studio. In this studio I can fire my large scale sculptures, and no urban distraction. My children are freely running around in the forest with animals while I work. It’s breathtakingly beautiful. We have a lake view from my studio and my sculptures are everywhere in our forest garden...

HOLE & CORNER MAGAZINE - A quest for natural pigments | Issue 21: Restless, Notes & Ideas

Scottish-born artist Cavan Jayne McPherson () graduated with a master’s degree in womenswear knit from the Royal College of Art () in 2018. Here, she explored the agriculture and innovation in natural fibre and dye. With a large archive of colour recipes and application methods, her ongoing projects include a focus on marine pigment, local dye plant agriculture and reworking/overdye collaborations with designers and artists.

McPherson’s pursuit of natural colour pigment practices has taken her on many adventures, from her birthplace on the Scottish west coast to the volcanic mud of St Lucia. Highlighting the origins of colour and fibre are central to her work. Here, shows us some pages from her travel journals…

‘When travelling, colour has always spoken to me in an incredibly multi-sensory way. I see this when, for example, the nuances in the sunrise or sunset are illuminated by a nearby texture or scent, or bodies of water reflect the vastness of the sky as wind moves with and through the waves and clouds. Growing up on the Scottish West coast, dusk was a time to down tools and appreciate the non-material forces around you: linear colours develop from the shoreline upwards to remind you that you can never recreate the infinite beauty carved by nature as the elements collide. When I travel, I am treated to a daily connection with the seascape. This is a natural feature where I find an abundance of creative inspiration.

Their mattresses are made by hand in a purpose-built factory in Devon, by a team of craftspeople to ensure that every stitch, every fibre, every tufting button and every cover is painstakingly created, teased and checked. We invite you to come and try one out at our residency at The Lab E20 (East Village London) and chat to Emma about different options, including bespoke headboard designs.

Naturalmat believe that natural fibres are best and there are no chemicals, toxic coatings, or synthetic fillings in their products.

Emma’s passion is in creating spaces that feel contemporary and unique, whilst being relaxed and warm, and her love for well-crafted furniture and materials is at the heart of her designs.

IN THE STUDIO WITH… Pia Wallén ()

Swedish designer Pia Wallén is best known for her cosy but cool felt slippers. She first started working with felt in the 1980s as a student at Beckmans College of Design () and then began playing with other materials typically used in Swedish felt costumes.

Her work is always distinctly Swedish, a little folksy and somehow perfectly timeless. This month, Arket () launched its second Nordic Stories collection with Wallén as the featured designer. We caught up with Wallén in her Stockholm-based studio...

Tell us about your collaboration with Arket. How do you translate your interiors work and love of craft into fashion?

I have always enjoyed exploring the crossover in the fields of fashion, accessories and interior design in fabric and techniques. This is also what the collaboration is build upon. I am especially interested in the wool fibre’s ability to produce felt.

HOLE & CORNER MAGAZINE - Issue 18: Details

As a child, she was fascinated by dust in the corners of rooms. Then at art school, she wasn’t so much interested
in her artwork as the material she was making it on. Jane Ponsford () has found her calling as a papermaker for whom pulp is precious. Paper, she says, is never a neutral surface…

HOLE & CORNER MAGAZINE – Things to Learn & Do Issue

Pedal to the metal...

When Ridley Scott () needs red petals or the cast of mamma mia need flowery bathing caps, who do you call? Welcome to the strange world of Shirley leaf & petal...

The flower veiners were originally heated over hot coals and hand-stroked to emboss the leaves and petals for the production line. Hammers were of different weights, depending on the type of fabric. A degree of automation arrived in the form of a hand-operated veining (or embossing) machine dating from 1911. It takes up much of the floor area in this room – and is still in use.

Now that I have finally ventured beyond the shop’s counter, I find myself in a state of amazement. This is so much more than a time capsule representing a lost craft, or a working museum that turns out tourist trinkets. Alongside bread-and butter artificial flowers, Shirley Leaf & Petal uses the original presses and flower irons (more correctly known as ‘veiners’) to make intricately detailed flowers and leaves from stunning vintage silks and velvets...

THE HOLE & CORNER SHOP - Introducing Hyde Wares ( Y D E)

Born from an urge to slow down, Hyde Wares is a range of leather accessories that really stands the test of time. Made from vegetable-tan leather produced in Devon, each piece displays the history of life through scars and imperfections. Over time, the leather develops a patina and is built to grow with its owner.

Hyde Wares wallets, purses and accessories are created by Jonathan Hyde in his Sheffield-based workshop and are now available to buy at The Hole & Corner Shop.
