Poisoned Portraits Part One by Randall Windle

"Vel’s loneliness was up and down with each day, which in themselves were the same. Cook, eat, sleep, and repeat. There were no more women or men of authority here, no guidance except what was left behind in his mind. His mind was what the unseeable things wanted. Vel was sure of it—a broken spirit."

The Six Nations at Propyard by Hannah Shepherd

"At the beginning of February, I was lucky enough to be invited to Propyard in Bristol to watch the commencement of the six nations on Saturday, the 4th of February. I have been to Propyard before and can safely say it is currently my favourite venue in Bristol, so I was ecstatic when they invited me."

Link found between Grenfell fire and increase in terminal illnesses by Hannah Massoudi

"Studies have shown that firefighters are four times more likely to get cancer in their working life. The providers of the cladding, Celotex, revealed in memo that “Research demonstrated that it produced acidic, toxic smoke when burned, 18 months before the blaze.” It was revealed that the company falsified data so its product would pass the minimum standard of limited combustion."

Skye Collacott Williamson

"The new season of Formula 1 begins soon, with much excitement over the latest cars, particularly Sir Lewis Hamilton’s Black Mercedes W14. But unfortunately, it also begins with some new rules, and Sir Lewis Hamilton seems to be the target of these unnecessary rules."

Why Transgender+ Rights Matter More Than Ever by Catherine Flaherty

"Following the murder of Brianna G**y in the north-west of England, the transgender (hereby shortened to trans) community requires even more support and assistance ever.
How have we failed the trans population so badly that this is what they have to deal with?"

∞ by Lily Majid

"I wish this would last forever
giggling with spirits in my blood. You looked so peaceful and whisper
here’s where I store my soul. It’s a bad habit, hazy on oak cologne
I rub dream dust from my eyes and remember
sleeping on your side of the bed to feel closer. Feathered pillows fill the space
until my skin is translucent, thin and pale."

The Premier League’s Green Weekend. by Hannah Shepherd

"So, with this in mind, it can be argued that the green weekend doesn’t make up for the sport’s negative contribution towards climate change, but it shows great initiative from the football world. Once again, the football community has used their huge platform to promote something important, so take away from this what you choose."

Legal Euthanasia; what is it? by Catherine Flaherty

"The Assisted Dying Bill would offer patients the ability to be cared for by a consultant/GP until they decide on whether they want to continue living or want to end their life. At this stage, it seems to only affect the terminally ill who have less than six months to live. While this might seem unimportant to some, in a time when we still suffer from the after-effects of the COVID-19 epidemic, where hundreds of people died in pain and alone, the question is even more relevant. We, as people, should be allowed to choose how we leave this world."

How To Be Alone by Madeline Daly

"No matter the outcome, we are shutting out the night, running on thin daylight.
To be available and affable – to hold heartache in your hands, courage on the back of curiosity, nose spotted with it.
A consequence never truly agreeable."

Jamworks On Location - A Guide On Where To Best Use The Software by Daniel Penfold

Last time at UWE, our heroes found themselves caught in quite the predicament! They’d been blessed with Jamworks, an unrivalled study tool crafted by the gods of technology but found themselves starstruck by their unlimited potential. Now paralysed with indecision on
how to utilise this new power, will they be able to pass their exam period? Will they finally earn the respect of their lecturers? Will I ever think of a better way to start an article? (This last one is unlikely). Find out, in this exciting new episode of HUB Magazine!

My Policeman Film Review by Maria Muzzi Kalil

"There is another element which is important to say, it is that Tom has been seen as a character who does not express their emotions during the film and the factor could be due to historical moments and his social position as a policeman. The old fashion model of masculinity which was highly encouraged in the 50s and is still somehow present nowadays puts men in a place where they cannot express their own feelings and vulnerability."

The Hangry Vampire by Madeline Daly

"I refuse, absolutely refuse to nip into the Tesco’s next door for a ‘vampire friendly’ meal deal. Not only have they gone up to £3.80, but who wants a soggy prawn sandwich with limp lettuce doused with day-old blood? The only saving grace of the atrocity is the blood-orange San Pellegrino they do. Surprisingly refreshing, the iron in the blood truly highlights the grapefruit’s zesty sort of bittersweetness. Ten out of Ten would recommend it. But, of course, it’s also fizzy, which is always a bonus.

The council shall be hearing about this queuing in the monthly feedback report."

Getting out of the “I’m fine” attitude – A psychoanalytical approach to checking in. by Gaurav Bhandari

"It is often difficult to argue with someone’s response when they give you such a dead-end answer, but if their non-verbal language (such as body language, tone of voice, and eye contact) does not synchronize with the positive message they are conveying, then it becomes difficult to understand what is really going on with your mates."

Dark Avenues by Haven Milne

"The change was different, and with difference comes adaptation and the unexpected, but that is life, isn’t it? Except for Jason, they were always the unexpected, just like them grabbing me by my rough hair and forcing my head to one side stiffly. I shot him a frustrated look, then wiped the spilt beer from my trousers before it could soak in."

Arcadia by Madeline Daly

"The ladybird has seven spots. They’re on the outer ring, and one sits in the middle on the line separating its wings. It follows the beads of water along the joint of Zhea’s thumb, its legs barely a whisper of movement, the deep red a stark contrast to the golden hue of her sun-crisp skin."

Avatar: The Way of Water Film Review by Charley Vaughan

"Introducing new animatic instalments and a much larger production team, James Cameron emerges from beneath the waters and opens the cinematic floodgates to a newly reinforced sequel: Avatar: The Way of Water. To nobody’s surprise, Cameron once again delivered a cinematic phenomenon, challenging the science of special effects in filmmaking and performance capture. Since 2009, Cameron promised future instalments and larger- than- life visuals by introducing us to life on the shore. The question is, did he deliver what he had promised?"
