What do you think of our new Tobias and Syd image? We love it. There are two versions, can you spot the difference? We commissioned Spanish artist, Maria Herreros to make an image for the play after seeing her beautiful bold work on a Laydeez do Comics monthly event. Maria is a painting, illustration, mural and comic artist. She is involved in commercial, artistic and social projects all over the world. Currently focusing on gender equality and social justice, her style plays around the concept of stabilised beauty and shaking normatives. On my character Brain.... “Brain is all of us. Brain is someone who grows from the very start of Consciousness. And the only difference between brain and us is that brain doesn't have a body, a face. But brain is as desperate to cling onto life as the rest of us are. Brain is the frustration. The terror, we all have perhaps of being misunderstood. Of being alone and unable to survive alone. Brain knows what we take for granted, which is our bodies and our ability to be taken seriously.” Shaparak Khorsandi.

Sitting on the grass, in a corner of the garden, I am considering point of view, voice over and lines. It's for my next dramaturgy session, tomorrow, with Sara Davies, for audio drama Tobias and Syd. By the old bins in the corner, is a sculpture of a God called Throb - made by the late Vaughan Johns for one of my first plays, performed at Battersea Arts Centre as part of a festival of music and theatre, a lot of years ago. These early experiences really influence development as an artist.

“An adventure… I loved it, it was emotional, the language was beautiful, the humour, I liked the subject matter, and the way you approached it… the inner voice, the dreamlike quality, the personification of to***co, the power and politics… so much there.

The relationship between Tobias and Syd was gripping but the most fascinating is what Syd goes through – and the question of who is in control? And how Tobias is flirty, playful and then dominates. We do strange things to justify our behaviour. The lies we tell ourselves. The cognitive dissonance. It is fascinating.
