As yet another year passes without meaningful intervention, Kashmir remains gripped in a state of brutal repression and isolation. The International Human Rights Movement condemns the international community’s alarming silence on India’s actions in Kashmir, actions that have drawn sharp criticism from human rights organizations worldwide. With arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, and restrictions on freedom of expression, India’s government has persistently undermined the dignity and rights of the Kashmiri people. In particular, it has suppressed journalists, activists, and civil society members, denying the very freedoms upon which the international order claims to stand.
Where are the voices of the United Nations, the European Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and other prominent bodies? Despite formal statements and token gestures, these organizations have shown a disturbing unwillingness to address the Kashmir crisis effectively. The United Nations, tasked with preserving global peace and security, has been notably passive in enforcing its own resolutions. The EU, whose foundational principles include human rights advocacy, has failed to hold India accountable in any impactful way. Likewise, the OIC has historically voiced concern over Kashmir, yet beyond statements, it has not taken decisive action to protect the rights of Kashmiri Muslims.
Reports from Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International reveal that since 2019, thousands have been held in pretrial detention in Kashmir under India’s counterterrorism laws, often without formal charges or trials.
