When I first moved to Brighton in 2010, there used to be a bunch of free (!) top-level post-rock shows over at the Druids Arms run by the excellent Nice Weather For Airstrikes - I had a lovely time watching some great bands and drinking the absurdly strong homebrew cider they sold at the bar there. Pete Lambrou of NWFA these days performs as the fantastic VLMV and we were blessed to put him on for a wonderful show last year at the Folklore Rooms. This show will feature some brand new VLMV music, if everything he's done so far is anything to go by, it should be wonderful.

VLMV (pronounced ALMA) is a self-proclaimed ambient-ish post-something singer-songwriter, composer and producer from London.

“An often breathtaking collection of movement and song, ALMA have crafted something truly special here” – Gold Flake Paint
‘Heart-achingly beautiful’ - Prog Magazine
“As worthy of your love and admiration as anything Sigur Rós or Explosions In The Sky have released” - Team Rock

VLMV plays our FINAL SHOW alldayer, ‘Cupboard Music House Party pt.2’, TOMORROW 14th December at The Hope & Ruin Brighton alongside Codex Serafini, Fuzzy Lights, Josaleigh Pollett, Merlin Tonto, The Moats, Objections, Hattie Cooke,
Power Smile, Perennial & Stuart O'Connor.

Tickets on sale now via the link in our bio - or available on the door. I've attached times at the end of this post too, for those who have been asking!

Those who know me, know how much the local Hertfordshire scene I started out in meant to me. I very literally wouldn’t be here, putting this show on without all those people, too many to name.

Over the years I’ve gone out of my way to keep putting on some of those folks wherever I am at that point – one of the most important ones for me personally was when I put on Stuart O'Connor during the period living in Cheltenham, where we packed out the Frog & Fiddle and had a great show. I’d probably have quit doing shows if it wasn’t for that one going so well, so I’m really pleased Stuart was able to fit in playing at this as part of his most recent tour.

Full time touring internationally since 2006. Over 2000 shows - in UK Japan, New Zealand, Australia, S. Korea, Italy, Germany, Colombia, France, Poland, Austria, Czech Rep, Thailand, Netherlands, Switzerland, United States. Sharing billings with Damien Rice, Billy Cobham, Glen Matlock (S*x Pistols), The Staves, Ocean Colour Scene, Mad Professor, Ed Sheeran, James Bay, To name a few.

Now based in France, Stuart has built a steady following across the globe through relentless touring, truly one of the hardest working musicians in the game.

Stuart plays our FINAL SHOW alldayer, ‘Cupboard Music House Party pt.2’, TOMORROW 14th December at The Hope & Ruin Brighton alongside Codex Serafini, Fuzzy Lights, Josaleigh Pollett, Merlin Tonto, The Moats, Objections, Hattie Cooke,
Power Smile, Perennial & VLMV.

The first show I put on featured three bands playing their first ever show - felt right to make sure we had at least one on the last show we do too.

Debut show from Power Smile, 2/3 of The Righteous Ones of the Blazing Rockets (lovable noisy post-something scamps who we put on countless times with the likes of Delta Sleep, Bilge Pump and Pile amongst others). Near a decade in the writing room has led to this first show.

When asked what they sound like, this was the result:
"In a cosmos rotting like a dog in a well, Power Smile’s sound writhes through the void, a twisted lullaby for the remnants of a crumbling farce."

We have no idea what they’ll sound like, come and find out whilst I do. We’re intrigued.

Power Smile play our FINAL SHOW alldayer, ‘Cupboard Music House Party pt.2’, THIS SATURDAY 14th December at The Hope & Ruin Brighton alongside Codex Serafini, Fuzzy Lights, Josaleigh Pollett, Merlin Tonto, The Moats, Objections, Hattie Cooke,
Stuart O'Connor, Perennial & VLMV.

When I was first planning this final show, it was going to be much earlier in the year, but then I found out the wonderful Perennial (whose 'In The Midnight Hour' record absolutely blew me away and is among my most played of the last few years) were touring in the UK for the first time in December so, that's worth planning a show around, right? Since then they released the furious 'Art History' this year - honestly I can't wait to see them.

Perennial is an art punk three-piece from New England. The band’s sound – built from the sharp minimalism of guitar, electric organ, and drums – is a kinetic collage of mod pop, 90s post-hardcore, post-bop jazz and 60s soul. The band’s ferocious live show – quick and electrifying – has already become the stuff of DIY legend, short bursts of manic energy with barely a moment to catch your breath: not to be missed.

Perennial play our FINAL SHOW alldayer, ‘Cupboard Music House Party pt.2’, THIS SATURDAY 14th December at The Hope & Ruin Brighton alongside Codex Serafini, Fuzzy Lights, Josaleigh Pollett, Merlin Tonto, The Moats, Objections, Hattie Cooke, Stuart O'Connor, Power Smile & VLMV.

Many times over the years did we put on UK DIY royalty Bilge Pump (some of the nicest people in Rock) - one time their friends Beards came along too and a top time was had by all. Of course when Joe & Neil from the former joined Claire of the latter, we’d want a piece of that.

Objections don’t sound like those bands.

Debut LP ‘Optimistic Sizing’ is genuinely post-punk in the literal sense of the term. Objections take the freedom and anyone-can-do-it promise of punk and run somewhere new and adventurous with it, creating a vibrant and living musical language with which to communicate their own unique world view. As a result, Optimistic Sizing is not only a classic debut album but a timeless one.

Objections play our FINAL SHOW alldayer, ‘Cupboard Music House Party pt.2’, THIS SATURDAY 14th December at The Hope & Ruin Brighton alongside Codex Serafini, Fuzzy Lights, Josaleigh Pollett, Merlin Tonto, The Moats, Perennial, Hattie Cooke, Stuart O'Connor, Power Smile & VLMV.

Over the years I've seen Soft Walls (solo-with-a-band moniker of Dan Reeves, also of Brighton institution Cold Pumas) absolutely loads of times, and have been lucky enough to have them come and play shows a couple of times, first with Chicago krauters (is that a term?) Disappears, then just last year with the wonderful En Attendant Ana at the Folklore Rooms (a properly rammo show I won't forget, what a great crowd).

Yep, I asked if they'd play this and they said no!

Luckily though, that was because they wanted to debut a brand new band THE MOATS, a fully collaborative group (rather than a solo project) featuring the most recent SW lineup. Influenced by san-fran jangle and Australian rockers with a bit of Neil Young and Byrds thrown in - as I say, this will be their first performance so make sure you catch it, I can't wait.

The Moats play our FINAL SHOW alldayer, ‘Cupboard Music House Party pt.2’, Saturday 14th December at The Hope & Ruin Brighton alongside Codex Serafini, Fuzzy Lights, Josaleigh Pollett, Merlin Tonto, Objections, Perennial, Hattie Cooke, Stuart O'Connor, Power Smile & VLMV.

Formed in 2013, Merlin Tonto combine a patient, ever building, subliminal connection in the rhythm section with Owen Thomas’ virtuoso manipulation of electronics + visual interpretations of the band’s otherworldly sounds. It was clear from early performances that this was the genesis of a special band and their brilliance as a live act has seen them support bands as varied as Errors, Disappears, Esben & The Witch and Follakzoid.

‘My first experience of them was live and I’d suggest that anyone interested check out a live show. They are a band who deserve a much wider exposure.’ Colin Newman (Wire)

Merlin Tonto play our FINAL SHOW alldayer, ‘Cupboard Music House Party pt.2’, Saturday 14th December at The Hope & Ruin Brighton alongside Codex Serafini, Fuzzy Lights, Josaleigh Pollett, Objections, Perennial, The Moats, Hattie Cooke, Stuart O'Connor, Power Smile & VLMV.

We’re honoured to welcome Salt Lake City’s Josaleigh Pollett for their first ever performance outside the USA.

Writing tender and thoughtful DIY indie rock, recent third album ‘In The Garden, By The Weeds’ is an honest collection of dynamic and distorted pop songs and the first album Pollett considers self-reflective. Recorded over a year in a bedroom with close friend and collaborator Jordan Watko, each song possesses an attention to detail and cinematic atmosphere that could only be created by patience. Pollett digs into their personal garden and delivers candid, wistful, and liberating moments that create a relatable exploration of emotions over Watko’s intricate and metallic soundscapes.

We were blessed to release a CD version of previous album ‘No Woman Is The Sea’ last year, the first international release of Josaleigh’s material - copies will be available on the merch stand.

Josaleigh has opened for Torres, St. Vincent, Deep Sea Diver, Wild Pink, Esmé Patterson and DeVotchKa, amongst others.

Josaleigh plays our FINAL SHOW alldayer, ‘Cupboard Music House Party pt.2’, Saturday 14th December at The Hope & Ruin Brighton alongside Codex Serafini, Fuzzy Lights, Merlin Tonto, Objections, Perennial, The Moats, Hattie Cooke, Stuart O'Connor, Power Smile & VLMV.

You all like a bit of tasty vegan food don’t you? Me too!

Those legends at Beelzebab are doing a deal for all House Party wristband holders on 14/12 for their ‘Norm’ dog & fries for just £9! You can grab yours in the bar at The Hope & Ruin throughout the day.

Not sure there’s a vegan food item I’ve eaten more than these dogs, you’d better believe I’ll be filling up myself at some point on the day.

We’ve worked with Hattie Cooke on so many shows over the years we’d have been remiss to not ask her to play one last time. Over the years for us Hattie has headlined of course, but also supported the likes of RM Hubbert, Haiku Salut, Catherine Ireton and of course Jeffrey Lewis.

A rising talent in the truest sense of the word, 2019’s ‘The Sleepers’ (Spun Out of Control) established Hattie Cooke as an emerging exciting figure in the world of electronic music with its instrumental synth soundtrack to an imagined film, solidified by 2021’s ‘Bliss Land’, a delicate fully-realised merging of those sounds with Hattie’s earlier solo songwriting styles.

Physical copies of the limited ‘Dinked’ edition of Bliss Land sold out in a matter of hours, placing the album at Number 12 in the Official Record Store Charts and 33 in the Vinyl Charts.

Hattie plays our FINAL SHOW alldayer, ‘Cupboard Music House Party pt.2’, Saturday 14th December at The Hope & Ruin Brighton alongside Codex Serafini, Fuzzy Lights, Josaleigh Pollett, Merlin Tonto, Objections, Perennial, The Moats, Stuart O’Connor, Power Smile & VLMV.

Fuzzy Lights’ sound has been recently stripped back to its component parts, deconstructed and rebuilt under less obvious influences. There’s a bedrock of folk-rock - predecessors like Trees and Fairport Convention - but this is then built upon through multiple layers, from the stillness of Talk Talk to the orchestral chaos of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. With ‘Burials’, Fuzzy Lights have cultivated these sounds and influences into something new and fresh that distances them from the rest of the folk-rock crowd.

Like most of the all-dayer, they’re a headliner in their own right and sold out the Pipeline for us a couple of years back (we co-promoted that with Yeah Go On Then) - video is from that show. Can’t wait to catch them again.

Fuzzy Lights play our FINAL SHOW alldayer, ‘Cupboard Music House Party pt.2’, Saturday 14th December at The Hope & Ruin Brighton alongside Codex Serafini Hattie Cooke Josaleigh Pollett Merlin Tonto Objections Perennial, The Moats, Stuart O'Connor, Power Smile, Vincent Vocoder Voice & VLMV.

Tonight! Donald WG Lindsay & Alasdair Roberts + Sairie at Komedia Brighton - remaining tickets via Komedia website.

Scottish musicians Donald WG Lindsay and Alasdair Roberts have been friends for thirty years, since their teenage days. In these three decades, their careers in music have taken them down differing yet similarly unorthodox paths, and they’ve continued to make a lot of music together, usually informally. They’ve only rarely appeared together in concert, but in autumn 2024 they will remedy this state of affairs with their first duo tour.

Donald and Alasdair will present a programme featuring a rich variety of pipe tunes with guitar accompaniment, as well as a broad selection of songs both traditional and original. The pipe tunes bring together a diverse range of influences, from Scots fiddle tunes (Donald’s elder brother’s fiddling being an early influence), by way of Hungarian and Romanian pipe music, to classic and contemporary Highland piping and Lowland, Border and Northumbrian tunes. The songs range from variants (some rare, some more well-known) of traditional ballads or ‘muckle sangs’, to songs from the Scots lyrical tradition from the early modern period onwards, to contemporary songs written by both Alasdair and Donald.

In the company of Donald WG Lindsay and Alasdair Roberts, listeners can expect a thrilling evening in which rare and splendid gems of Scottish musical history and tradition will be brought to life in the hands of two unconventional masters, who invite you to join them in celebrating thirty years of music and, just as importantly, of friendship!

Support comes from the wonderful Sairie, a true gem of the Sussex folk scene - surely destined for much bigger things, catch them now whilst you can.

This event is in the Studio Bar. Co-pro with our pals Love Thy Neighbour

A saturnian five piece of interchangeable shapes masquerading as fact, lying in the uneasy boundary between surreal and fantasy.

Awesome heavy psych rock on Riot Season Records - we’ve wanted to get them on a show for years and are glad to finally get the chance.

Hard to say fully how much it means to us, having been able to work with these experimental ambient-pop geniuses for so long - our first two vinyl record releases were for Speak Galactic, we’ve put them on countless times with the likes of Laetitia Sadier, Jeniferever, Delta Sleep & Guardian Alien amongst plenty of others, whilst accompanying them as they played festivals such as End of the Road and Carefully Planned.

I think I’d have stopped putting on shows many years ago if it weren’t for this band. It helps that they’re absolutely excellent.

Speak Galactic play Pt. 1 of Cupboard Music’s House Party at The Prince Albert, a matinee show this Saturday 16 Nov w/ Rad Spurts and Lonely Ghosts x The Tumbledown Estate - it’s now FREE and all ages, so pop down if you’re about. Doors at 13:30.

Next Saturday, afternoon show - NOW FREE ENTRY!

We continue our goodbye celebrations with a special one in the afternoon, again at The Prince Albert. Sadly we’ve lost Kowloon Cowboy from the lineup but to make up for it we’ve made the show FREE instead because, heck, let’s have a party! (Everyone who’s bought a ticket will be refunded)

We’ve got Speak Galactic, Rad Spurts and Lonely Ghosts x The Tumbledown Estate for you, and couldn’t be more excited. Doors are at 1:30pm and it’s ALL AGES so there’s no better time to induct your little ones about gigs. See you next Saturday!

One week! We’re at The Prince Albert next Weds with a tip top lineup ft. Kiran Leonard, Sunglasz Vendor & Alexander Painter.

We’ve been loving Kiran’s latest ‘Real Home’ (Memorials of Distinction) and can’t wait to hear some cuts from it live in his new band ft members of Caroline, Shovel Dance Collective and Historically Fu**ed.

Tickets still on sale (but starting to run low so best jump on that) via WeGotTickets + see tickets - link in the comments.
