Burning the Clocks returns with ‘Voyager’ theme for this Saturday's winter solstice lantern parade 🌙

Commemorating the 30th Burning the Clocks, we’re reflecting on our own journeys inspired by Carl Sagan’s timeless words:

“Everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives, on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”

This annual event will welcome over 2,000 parade participants with a dozen local bands, dancers and artists who will entertain more than 30,000 expected onlookers to celebrate the shortest day of the year. The event provides an important community focused antidote to the excesses of Christmas with a different theme every year. This year’s theme highlights Brighton & Hove’s important welcome to so many displaced people on their individual voyages. 🚢

Following the success of last year’s biggest ever Burning the Clocks event, organisers at Same Sky are growing the parade’s artistic community by welcoming the local deaf community to celebrate the Winter Solstice this Saturday 21st December 2024.

❤Burning the Clocks is a free, unticketed public event.❤

The Parade begins on New Road around 6pm and finishes at the Kemptown beach around 7.30pm. Fireworks and effigy burning finish around 8 to 8.30pm If viewing the parade, please dress warm, bring a snack, and bring along any cash you’d like to drop in the bucket to support the event. 💷

This event is proudly funded by Arts Council England, ensuring that this community event is made possible by the public. There is also a crowdfunder campaign that offers different prizes including personalised lanterns for the parade, limited-edition prints and a chance to lead the procession. There are also limited edition original prints from regular artist Graham Carter, who has created another great poster for 2024.

Burning the Clocks relies heavily on donations to make this event possible, please support them by donating to their crowdfunder here: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/burning-the-clocks-2024

The mag also chatted to comedy star Milton Jones on his new show Ha!Milton, discovered more about the enigmatic musician Nina Kohout and talked to a talented local harmony band, The Heavy Heavy about being inspired by the 60s and their new found stardom.

On the more festive side of things... BN1 Magazine spent the night in the cosiest location in Lewes at The White Hart, a newly refurbished once 16th-century Coaching Inn. AD| 🔊Starting this Friday 🔊 From 1927, the multi-award-winning company behind previous TOM hits The Animals and Children Took To The Streets, Golem and ROOTS, comes a brand-new show. Combining handcrafted animation and bold storytelling, join us and dive into a magical and mischievous world, inspired by a true story.

Kim and Davey’s dad, Mr E, has disappeared. When Mr E writes to his children to tell them what has happened, his imagination takes over. Reality collides with fantasy, as we travel on a fast-paced journey through his wild adventure stories. Mr E’s letters are staged using song, dance, and absurd, subversive animations, as his stories become a kind of game between him and his children - a cathartic release in the face of distress.

Please right back explores the difficulties children go through when a parent leaves the family while celebrating the power of the imagination to overcome hardship. Part social realism, part science fiction with a healthy dose of mischief and a dash of dystopia, Please right back is a eulogy to the power of the imagination, storytelling and make-believe.

In a small quiet corner of Sussex, the golden age of British aviation is being kept alive and accessible for all. During World War II, the Supermarine Spitfire played a key role in defending Britain. Produced in huge numbers, it was a regular sight over the South East for two decades; accompanied by the distinctive roar of its engines it became the stuff of legend. Many examples of this fighter aircraft survive in working condition, but you can still experience its thrills without having to leave the ground.

Brian Smith, who served with the RAF and worked as a pilot with British Airways, has constructed a unique flight simulator next to his home in Wisborough Green. “When I retired, I didn’t know what to do with myself,” he tells me. Inspired by seeing a basic model of the cockpit at The Air Transport Auxiliary Museum in Maidenhead, he discovered nobody had built a Spitfire simulator at that point. He and his team spent a year building an ultra-realistic replica of the iconic Mk XIV’s cockpit, complete with authentic controls and displays, supported by the latest computer technology and a large-scale sound system. Three huge screens surround the pilot, giving the impression of being above a real landscape.
