I thought I'd reintroduce myself. I'm Emma and this is a pic of me in my only Christmas jumper that comes out every year. If I give you a festive hug I may well electrocute you.
Christmas in our house means (usually) not allowing any Christmas talk until after Bonfire Night, then December packed with festive socialising, culminating in a big blow out on Christmas Eve and then lolling around in pyjamas eating cheese and leftovers for every meal for as long as possible after that. Emerging in the new year ready for a new start, fully rested and cheesed-out (which is totally different from cheesed-off)...

Controversial? Maybe. Let me explain.
We read a lot of non-fiction but a lot of the books we pick up are hard going.
We're not talking about ones the size of a house brick on some niche subject we're not into. We're talking about the exciting looking ones laid out like sweeties on the tables in Waterstones, that all look SO good.
Well, we're here to tell you that despite the jazzy covers, often they're not so good. We have three particular bug bears...
#1 - can we just have a total ban on introductory chapters, prefaces and authors setting out what they plan to prove over the course of the book. Just get started, please! We don't need the longwinded preamble.
#2 - an exciting sounding idea that starts with gusto but runs out of steam well before the end. This happens a LOT. Just write an article and be done!
#3 - a clever premise and lively writing but did no one ask why it matters or why we should care?
All of which is to say that if you love the idea of non-fiction reading but find the reality can be a bit of a slog, then we've got your back.
We read and reject a lot of books before we settle on two to send out. Which means the ones you get from us are always great reads, thought-provoking, significant and definitely not dull.

Today is World Mental Health Day.
Mental health is rightly much more readily discussed nowadays but the public conversation often gets distilled down into something so superficial that it can be totally irrelevant to people struggling with serious mental health challenges.
Everything can't be fixed with a bubble bath and a walk outside, friends and family don't always come through when a person's behaviour is challenging and disruptive, and mental health services often let people down.
What we can do, I think, is make it our business to really try to understand the experience of living with mental health conditions. Which is why we included this brilliant book in our mind-themed autumn subscription box.
How much do you know about agoraphobia? After reading this book, we realised we knew basically nothing.
Caveney's book is immersive and poetic to read. At the same time there's a matter of fact quality to the words that leaves you feeling you've taken as clear a look at agoraphobia as it's possible to take, given the elusive nature of the condition.
It's a brilliant reminder that our internal landscapes are incredible and complicated places, and all the better for being honestly explored.

Hello friends! Our autumn Drift + Focus box has landed on subscribers' doorsteps so we can finally reveal that the theme of the first box was MIND. We'll post more details of everything we sent over the next few days, including a closer look at both books. Let's start with this animation by Barcelona-based artist, Bea Vaquero, which subscribers will recognise from the cover of the magazine. It's called "Look Inside" and we thought it was the perfect illustration for a box that's curated around looking inwards and considering how our brains work, what the mind actually is, and how much control we have over the things we think and feel. A big topic for our first box but plenty of playful twists to keep you entertained!
