Does language make things worse for people with disabilities?

People who haven’t been exposed much to the disability world are often unaware of the consequences their words bear. Me included. (I’m still learning.)

The examples below are phrases I’ve heard or even said very often before becoming aware of their impact on others.

Since language, just like society itself, is ever-evolving, ableism should be a constant topic to make sure we’re using language correctly: to communicate, understand, and include, not to create barriers, differentness, and exclusion.

Through LanzAbility and spending time with individuals with disabilities, I have learned a lot about the importance of using the right language and seeing what impact it has on my holiday guests.

👉🏼 To support people with disabilities and make them feel welcome in our society, you don’t have to form a business or an association.

Simply inform yourself, ask, and listen.

What’s your take on this?

How to go on holiday with disabilities

Imagine you have a disability. Maybe you’re in a wheelchair or visually impaired.

This doesn’t mean you can’t go on that holiday trip - for example, to Lanzarote. 🏝️ It just means that you may need to take someone with you to lend you a helping hand.

A holiday companion can:

⁃ Manage your medication
⁃ Help you move around
⁃ Be your eyes, ears and legs
⁃ Allow your loved ones to relax too
⁃ Keep you company

Apart from all their professional skills, they are also people with whom you get to spend time and share unique moments.

Just look at Trevor, a visually impaired holiday guest to Lanzarote making his way to the water with his companion to go out on a jet ski.

Or Karen who says the best part of her holiday was the conversations she had with her companion strolling down the beach Avenida at sunset.

👉🏼 Going on holiday as someone with disabilities may present some obstacles. The good news is you don’t have to do it alone. 🫂

🎄🎁 Three Ways to Get Through the Holidays with Less Stress! 🎅✨

1️⃣ Practice Self-Care: Take a break from the holiday hustle and prioritize your own well-being. Whether it's a bubble bath, reading a book, or going for a walk, make sure to carve out some "me" time amidst all the festivities.

2️⃣ Set Realistic Expectations: Don't put too much pressure on yourself to create the "perfect" holiday experience. Remember, it's about spending quality time with loved ones, not achieving perfection. Embrace imperfections and focus on creating memorable moments instead.

3️⃣ Delegate & Collaborate: Don't be afraid to ask for help and share responsibilities. Whether it's planning the holiday menu, decorating the house, or organizing family activities, involving others allows for a more enjoyable and stress-free experience for everyone involved.
