Yesterday, I had the opportunity to speak with the BBC about physical activity, health and wellbeing, with a particular focus on hard-to-reach communities living in deprived areas. We also discussed the challenges faced in highly masculinised societies—especially contexts like Afghanistan where women and girls continue to face bans on accessing gyms, parks, and even basic education.

These structural barriers have profound implications for health equity, community wellbeing and the future of public health. This is a much-needed conversation.

While searching through some of my recent academic work online, I unexpectedly came across a Citation Awards listing recognising my contribution with the Best Research Article Award in Health Professions.

I hadn’t been aware of this feature, but it’s genuinely heartening to see our collective work in public health, physical activity, and wellbeing being acknowledged in this way.

This recognition is truly a reflection of the support, collaboration, and encouragement I’ve received from my colleagues, students, and research partners both at Birmingham City University and beyond.

I’ve never seen anyone more disconnected from the causes they once championed than Malala Yousafzai.
While Afghan girls remain out of school, Pakistan fuels conflict in Afghanistan, and humanitarian crises unfold in Gaza issues she was once vocal about, her focus now seems limited to her personal life and celebrity appearances.

It’s disappointing to see someone with such a global platform drift away from meaningful advocacy when her voice could make a real difference.
