The Rubber curry comb
👩‍🏫The rubber curry comb is used to loosen dirt, mud, and shedding hair from a horse's coat. It's also effective for massaging the horse’s skin and stimulating blood circulation.
Typically made of flexible rubber, the curry comb has short, rounded teeth.

🟢It’s best used in a circular motion to lift dirt and hair from the coat. Rubber curry combs are gentle enough to use on most parts of the horse’s body, except for the face.

🥰Besides cleaning the coat, using a rubber curry comb can be a relaxing and bonding experience for the horse, as it often enjoys the massage-like sensation.🥰

👩‍🏫The Dandy Brush 🦄
A dandy brush is a grooming brush with stiff bristles.
It's used to remove dried mud, dirt, and sweat from a horse's coat, mane and tail.

✨️The bristles are usually longer and stiffer compared to those of a body brush, making it effective for cleaning tougher, dried-on dirt. However, because of its stiffness, it should be used carefully to avoid irritating the ponys skin.✨️

The dandy brush is typically used on the horse's body, legs, mane and tail, ✋️but not on sensitive areas like the face. ✋️

🦄🫶This brush is a winter essential for maintaining your pony's tail, keeping it mud-free without causing hair damage. During the colder months, the tail hair is more prone to breakage, which can lead to a thinner tail in the summer if mane and tail brushes are used. This brush prevents that, ensuring a healthy and full tail year-round.🫶🦄

👩‍🏫Remember to constantly clean your brush with a curry comb to be effective at getting the dirt off ✨️

👩‍🏫The Plastic Curry Comb 🤔
Plastic curry combs are short pronged, stiff brushes made entirely of plastic.

✨️Its recommended using plastic curry combs to clean other brushes. They are effective at removing hair, dirt, and debris from grooming brushes, ensuring they stay clean and functional. ✨️

✋️It's important to note that plastic curry combs should not be used on the horse.

👩‍🏫The Body Brush 🦄
A ponies body brush is typically a soft-bristled brush used to remove dust, dirt, and dander from a horse's coat, giving it a smooth and shiny finish. ✨️
The bristles are usually longer and softer than other grooming brushes.

It's typically used on ponies that are stabled or clipped and not field kept, as the close-set bristles can remove the natural grease from the coat, which helps to waterproof the pony.
Using a body brush on field-kept pony can strip away this essential grease, so it's not recommended for them.

🦄🧴It's definitely essential if you want a shiny pony ✨️

Morning Gang 🫶

Interesting read 👀🐍🐍
Grass sickness is the devil I've lost a horse to this horrible disease up in Scotland and also saw one live poorly after surviving.
🕐 The horse would only have 10mins of energy and then have to rest, muscle was lacking and the horse was very wet at the mouth a lot.

Let's hope this breakthrough gives us a cure 🙏

The identification of the probable cause of equine grass sickness (EGS) is a “game changer” in understanding of the disease – and an important step towards reducing deaths. Experts believe they have found the neurotoxin responsible for causing EGS, which has been elusive for over 100 years. Re...

FYI - if you have thistles, NOW is the time to be cutting them (if you haven’t already in the last week and you are northern hemisphere).

Horses like thistles but at this stage of growth they are unlikely to be eating them much now. They are well into flowering and will be setting seed very soon.

Cutting them back now will stop you being overrun with them next year but also stop the seeds spreading to surrounding fields, particularly arable fields where farmers are fighting a war against trying to cut down on chemical use in the tide of invasive weeds.

We are cutting large sections down today which sadly means losing some of the beautiful meadow flowers surrounding them but in order for those meadow flowers to not be drowned out next year (and for our young trees to flourish) we have to make some sacrifices.

Checking for wildlife and nests etc as we go just in case as even though we are pretty much at the end of ground nesting season, you can’t be too careful 💚

As the saying goes…

“Cut thistles in May, they grow in a day,
Cut them in June, that is too soon,
Cut them in July, then they die!”
