What a great year of filmmaking 2023 has been. Becoming a full time freelance filmmaker and getting to tell stories for a living has exceeded all my expectations. It was a real privilege to film at this incredible gym with this incredible personal trainer in Canary Wharf.
This shoot was a reminder to me that the most important thing about creating a video isn't the flashy production, the 4k cameras, the great lighting or even the subject of your film doing something impressive (all of which we had in abundance on this shoot.) The most important element of any video is leveraging these things towards helping people to connect with the humanity of your story.

Filming in and around Greenwich and Canary Wharf this weekend for an exciting project in the fitness industry. Getting to shoot in beautiful spaces like this is an absolute joy.
I believe that more agile film making is not just better for budget but better for storytelling.
"The Creator" is a new film from director Gareth Edwards, that's shaken the film industry up. Not only is it astoundingly beautiful and top quality sci-fi storytelling but it was shot on a tiny pro-sumer camera that costs just £4,000. Allowing a level of film making flexibility that's captured the imagination of film makers and storytellers everywhere.
In an interview with Gareth Edwards, he talks about his time traveling around Indonesia with a handheld dslr to capture test footage for the prospective movie. He loved the images and the freedom with which he could move from location to location so much he decided to shoot the whole movie on a small camera rather than the conventional 100lb camera rigs used in other Hollywood blockbusters.
Not only did this decision allow him to keep the films budget to 80 million (which is a lot to us regular folk but a tiny budget for a project like this) but I believe it helped him, and the whole team, to tell a better story!
Us camera geeks are always tempted to go big on gear, but often times a project is better served and time and money stretched further when we can be picky with the gear we need and don't need to tell a great story!
