Lyn Padarn Llanberis

Llyn Padarn is a glacially formed lake in Snowdonia, Gwynedd, north Wales, and is an example of a moraine dammed lake. The lake is approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) long (about 240 acres) and at its deepest point is 94 feet (29 m) deep, and is one of the largest natural lakes in Wales. At its south-eastern end it is linked to the neighbouring Llyn Peris (which forms the lower reservoir of the Dinorwig power station). The busy village of Llanberis lies on the southern banks of the lake.

Caernarfon Victoria Dock Marina

Victoria Dock was constructed by Caernarfon Harbour Trust from 1868 to 1874. Previously the slate quay south of the castle had been the main focus of 19th-century harbour expansion in Caernarfon. In 1852 trains began running from the main line at Bangor to a terminus station where the Morrison’s supermarket now stands in Caernarfon. Later the railway was extended via a tunnel under Y Maes (the square outside the castle). These tracks provided excellent access to the New Basin area.

The slate quay continued to handle industrial exports and imports, while Victoria Dock was intended for general trade connected with the town and its hinterland. This revived the orientation of the 13th-century walled town, whose thriving import trade was based on quays at the mouth of the Cadnant river, to the north.

Dolbadarn Castle in Llanberis 🏰

Dolbadarn Castle, Welsh: Castell Dolbadarn is a fortification built by the Welsh prince Llywelyn the Great during the early 13th century, at the base of the Llanberis Pass, in northern Wales. The castle was important both militarily and as a symbol of Llywelyn's power and authority. The castle features a large stone keep, which historian Richard Avent considers "the finest surviving example of a Welsh round tower". In 1284 Dolbadarn was taken by Edward I, who removed some of its timbers to build his new castle at Caernarfon. The castle was used as a manor house for some years, before falling into ruin. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was a popular destination for painters interested in Sublime and Picturesque landscapes. It is now owned by Cadw and managed as a tourist attraction, and is protected as a grade I listed building.

Caernarfon Castle at night and day 🏰

Caernarfon Castle (Welsh: Castell Caernarfon) is a medieval fortress in Gwynedd, north-west Wales. The first fortification on the site was a motte-and-bailey castle built in the late 11th century, which King Edward I of England began to replace with the current stone structure in 1283. The castle and town established by Edward acted as the administrative centre of north Wales, and as a result the defences were built on a grand scale. There was a deliberate link with Caernarfon's Roman past—nearby is the Roman fort of Segontium—and the castle's walls are reminiscent of the Walls of Constantinople.

Octel Chemical Works Amlwch

Tucked away on the North Eastern edge of Anglesey, sits the port town of Amlwch, home to what was once the Octel bromine factory. The abandoned chemical factory has sat dormant for nearly 20 years.

The site once provided work to the people of Amlwch for nearly 50 years, but it was shut down by owners Great Lakes in 2005. Over the years since, attempts have been made to restore life to the factory but so far none have been successful.

For more than 50 years the site produced bromine and at its peak the plant employed 120 workers. Originally work concentrated on creating anti-knock compounds for engine fuel, before demand reduced and Great Lakes chemical corporation took over and the company diversified into other bromine-based products.

In 2003, the corporation decided to close the works with the loss of more than 100 jobs. Following this, two years later in 2005, the plant was shut completely before going through a nine-month process of decontamination.

Holyhead train station and the Celtic Gateway Bridge 🚂🌉

Holyhead railway station (Welsh: Gorsaf reilffordd Caergybi) serves the Welsh town of Holyhead (Welsh: Caergybi) on Holy Island, Anglesey. The station is the western terminus of the North Wales Coast Line 105+1⁄2 miles (170 km) west of Crewe and is managed by Transport for Wales Rail. It connects with the Port of Holyhead ferry terminal. The station is connected to the town centre by a stainless steel pedestrian/cycle bridge named The Celtic Gateway (Welsh: Porth Celtaidd).

The Celtic Gateway (Welsh: Porth Celtaidd) is a stainless steel pedestrian and cycle bridge located in Holyhead, Anglesey. Opened on 19 October 2006 by Andrew Davies AM to better connect Holyhead's railway station and ferry terminal with the town centre for pedestrians and cyclists. The distance between the two was originally 830 metres, including two steep inclines and the crossing of a busy road. A 1991 bridge reduced the distance to 585 metres with one steep incline but with the road crossing still needed. The current bridge has one shallow incline and cuts the distance to 280 metres with no roads to cross.

South Stack Lighthouse

South Stack (Welsh: Ynys Lawd) is an island situated just off Holy Island on the northwest coast of Anglesey, Wales

South Stack Lighthouse, which was completed in 1809, is sited 41 m (135 ft) above the sea on South Stack. Its lamp tower is 28 m (92 ft)-tall and the lighthouse complex covers seven acres (2.8 ha). There are over 390 stone steps and 10 metal steps down to the footbridge.

Originally the only way to cross to the island was in a basket suspended from a h**p cable. In 1828 an iron suspension bridge was built, it was replaced in 1964 with a steel cable truss bridge. However, in 1983 it had to be closed to the public due to safety concerns. After a new aluminium bridge was built, the lighthouse was reopened to the public in 1997. It is now a popular destination, attracting thousands of visitors every year.

Parys Mountain (Welsh: Mynydd Parys) is located south of the town of Amlwch in north east Anglesey, Wales. Originally known as Trysclwyn, the high ground is reputed to have gained its current name when it was given to Robert Parys, Chamberlain of North Wales by Henry IV. Llaneilian Church ⛪️

This is one of North Wales’ best preserved medieval churches. It is Grade 1 listed and features an unusual ochre-coloured tower with a pyramidal roof.

The original church here was built and richly endowed in honour of St Eilian c.450 AD by Caswallon Lawhir (Caswallon of the long hand), an eminent Cambrian Prince. The earliest surviving masonry, forming the tower, dates from 1175 to the 15th century.

A 14th-century stone chapel, known as Capel Caswallon, is linked to the church by a passage which is accessible from the sanctuary. It measures 4.4 x 3.7 metres.

The church was repaired in 1929. A major but non-intrusive restoration was completed in 2002.

Point Lynas Lighthouse and Llaneilian beach,

Point Lynas Lighthouse (Welsh: Goleudy Trwyn y Balog) is located on a headland in Llaneilian Community, on the north-east corner of Anglesey in North Wales (at grid reference SH479936). A pilot station was established on the point in 1766, to guide ships entering and leaving Liverpool, with an associated lighthouse added in 1779. The present building was built on the hilltop in 1835, so does not need a tower. Built and managed by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, it did not come under the care of Trinity House until 1973. By 2001 the lights were fully automated, so no resident staff were needed. Whilst the light is retained in operational use, the building and associated lighthouse keepers cottages were returned to the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board who then sold them.
