A blue plaque in honour of pioneering children’s doctor Professor Sir James Calvert Spence was unveiled today. The plaque has been placed on the house on Queen Street where Professor Spence was brought up, and was unveiled by his granddaughter Dr Jane Elphick.

The event was the culmination of four years of planning by distinguished paediatric oncologist Sir Alan Craft, retired Amble GP Dr Paul Creighton, and home owner Matthew Connolly.

FOLK FESTIVAL | Amble Sword performs as part of Folk Off this Saturday 31st August.

Amble has long had an association with sword dancing. A hundred years ago the original side of Rapper dancers were well known in the town and local villages dancing the Amble dance until the tradition died out in the 1930s as folk traditions often do when people pass and times change. However, for some six years now sword dancing has been back in Amble.

Performing alongside The Cherrypickers, Cohen Braithwaite Kilcoyne and Alistair Anderson.

Just a reminder Lifeboat Day is on THIS SUNDAY 18 Aug.

Big Announcement

This year our lifeboat day will not be held on the bank holiday Sunday in August. It will be held on Sunday 18th August from 10am till 3pm due to tides and it being our 200th year anniversary so please join us for a fun filled day with plenty to do from stalls to meeting the crew and getting up close to our lifeboats to see what it’s like aboard our All Weather Lifeboat inside the wheelhouse. Throughout the day you can ask whatever lifeboat questions you may have to any of the crew especially aboard our Shannon Class Lifeboat to find out how she runs and is maintained to what conditions she can operate in and survivor’s she can carry etc.
We hope to see you all here at the station and not mention all the delicious homemade bakes that are being served upstairs in the lifeboat station

MOTORBIKE ASB REPORTS IN AMBLE AND WARKWORTH AREA
A quad bike has been seized in Amble and will be crushed, after reports of ASB and concern for public safety. Police are calling for the public to continue to report ASB incidents.

Alnwick Neighbourhood Policing Team receive numerous reports of Motorbike ASB in the areas we cover. Whether that be in the towns of Alnwick and Amble, the rural locations to the west and the coastal areas to the east.

Recently in Amble there has been a slight increase in bike ASB reports. Of particular concern is a report regarding someone riding a black coloured Quad bike with a small child passenger being carried on the front.

Please report any concerns regarding bike ASB and for any information regarding the identity of the rider of the Quad Bike in Amble you can contact CSO 4089 Darin Fawcett who covers the Amble and Warkworth area. Darin's email address is [email protected]

About The Ambler

The Ambler is a community paper and hyperlocal site for the town of Amble, Northumberland UK. It is run by one worker and a dedicated team of volunteers. Our first edition hit the streets in January 2000 and we have produced six issues a year ever since.

Our purpose is to keep local people in touch with local events and groups, and to inform and encourage discussion on issues of interest to the community. We deliver a free newspaper to every house and business in Amble and a number to neighbouring communities.

We value your comments and encourage you to make your points politely. Please know that we keep to the guidelines set out by the New York Times! "A few things we won't tolerate on our page: personal attacks, obscenity, vulgarity, profanity (including expletives and letters followed by dashes) and commercial promotion without prior authorisation. While most comments will remain posted if they are on-topic and not abusive, moderating decisions are subjective. We will make them as carefully and consistently as we can."
