Opened by her parents in 1944, the jewellers has been run by Pauline Rodgers - known locally as ‘Miss Ellis’ - since 1974.

Now, at the age of 88, she has finally decided to retire - and close an incredible chapter in Altrincham’s retail story.

It opened on Regent Road in 1944.

A campaign has been launched to raise money for a new outdoor classroom and sculpture at Heyes Lane Primary School in Timperley.

It’s in memory of former teacher Anne Sproston, who tragically died in February at the age of just 41.

Iʼm raising money to part-fund a special outdoor classroom and sculpture in memory of our friend, colleague and inspirational teacher, Anne Sproston. Support this JustGiving Crowdfunding Page.

🎄 Christmas in King's Court: Day 4 - I Call Myself Sanchez

🍔 Meet Kim, the king of burgers

Kim Tomas’s years of experience means that King’s Court can lay claim to arguably the best burger in Altrincham.

The Portuguese chef runs the exotically-named I Call Myself Sanchez, which is the only permanent food outlet in King’s Court and a happy find for many who don’t want to vacate their cosy seat in the courtyard.

Tomas has been a chef all his career but since coming to England nine years ago, he’s worked at popular Greek restaurant Dimitris on Deansgate, Juan Mata’s former tapas restaurant Tapeo & Wine, and latterly Altrincham institution Porta as a sous chef.

But he’s now been in King’s Court for almost three years, serving a range of homemade burgers using beef from Waugh Brow Farm in Knutsford.

There’s also a selection of loaded fries and Mediterranean specials to choose from, including salt cod fritters, beef croquettes, fried Portuguese-style calamari and vegan croquettes.

Or as Kim says, “something to nibble on if you don’t want a burger”.

“We’ll be very busy in the run-up to Christmas,” he adds. “We also cater for private parties at the Ivy League, doing stews, curries, whatever the customer wants us to do.

“Everything is going very well here. It's a very nice environment here in King’s Court, even on a match day when England are playing! It's a very good place to come to enjoy a nice burger.”
