INTRODUCTION NEEDED

We are sooo close to posting our first podcast episode. But there’s one thing we are missing. We need a instrumental show introduction. No words, just music. Something 5-12 second long that will be played at the start of every podcast. Something to set the mood for the rest of the show, someting fun and snappy. So we were wondering if any of you talented people would like to get involved and would want to try and make us a instrumental intro for the show. You will be credited as the creator of the introduction across all platforms. So if you have any music making talents that you want to showcase then drop us a message and we can let you know some more info.

Decade by decade musical of the day - Dear Evan Hansen (2015)

A song to appreciate from this show: Words Fail

Standout lyrics from the show: Even when the dark comes crashing through, when you need a friend to carry you. And when you’re broken on the ground, you will be found. So let the sun come streaming in, 'Cause you’ll reach up and you’ll rise again. Lift your head and look around, you will be found. (You Will Be Found)

Why I love this show: A perefct example of a modern day musical in my opinion, and thousands of other peoples opinions. It took the world by storm not long after premiering on Broadway in 2016. The only show with as much levels of global success being Hamilton (again in my opinion). Dear Evan Hansen went on to win 6 out of 9 of it’s Tony Award Nominations.

This show has inceredible songs right throughout. From the iconic “Waving Though a Window” to the fun of “Sincerely, Me” to the goosebump causing song that is “You Will Be Found”, and the tear jerking “Words Fail”. Every song has it’s own unique thing, something that makes each song stand out, but also something that makes it fit in to this perfect collection of songs. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul deserve endless amounts of praise for what they created musically in this show. This is a show that has staying power in the world of theatre, down to the fact it’s relatable and its relevant, and it’s importance as a show.

It’s also important noting how incredible the cast were in that original Broadway run, the performers you will see on the cast recording. Ben Platt is simply a gift, Laura Dreyfuss is incredible, Michael Park and Jennifer Laura done everything as was needed, Rachel Bay Jones stole people’s hearts and won herself a Tony award for her portrayal as Evans mother. Mike Faust as Connor and Kristolyn Lloyd as Anna Beck brought a heartfelt sympathy to their roles. And Will Roland and Jared brought a level of energy and a humour to the show that was well needed and well performed.

This is a show for the modern soceity, with the show tackling issues such as: anxiety, depression, and self-worth. A show that has resonated with thousands upon thousands of people worldwide. And a show that has done good both on and off stage. With them partnering with several leading mental health charities and non-profits, it shows the impact this show has had on society. It’s more than just a musical. It’s evolved in to something else, something bigger. I love everything that Dear Evan Hansen is and stands for. And what is has done for some people. To tie it in to a song in the show, it’s made a lot of people feel that they have been found, that they are seen.

I love this show not only for what the show is in a technical sense, but what it is in general. I was looking for a way to describe this show and then I read something about the show that said “Just like Evan, many of us seek an outlet that makes us feel love and needed. However, it is important to realize that there are people around us that love us and care for us without us having to lie to them. This is not a typical musical full of happy songs and dance numbers, it is a sad and very relevant story. Audiences keep coming back for the message and the relatable characters. Dear Evan Hansen shares a message for everyone. You are not alone and you will be found.” And that is a message that needs to be preached from the top of the highest mountains. Again, this is a musical that has become more than just a musical. And for that, I love it. Theatre has endless possibilities of what it can do for people and Dear Evan Hansen is a perfect example of that.

Essay over.

Decade by decade musical of the day: Billy Elliot (2005)

A song to appreciate from the show: Once We Were Kings

Standout lyrics from the show: I suppose it’s like forgetting, losing who you are. And at the same time something makes you whole. (Electricity)

Why I love this show: This was the first show I ever saw on the West End in August of 2009, when I was 10 years old and I have loved the show ever since. This show is one for me I will watch and enjoy every single time. No single moment from this show ever grows old on me. The story about Billy is one I think is relatable for some boys in places like the valleys. Places that have more “traditional” expectations of what a man/boy should do. Places where most boys are out playing rugby or football or boxing and then you have those few young lads who decide to do something a bit more expressive like dance. But like they say in the show, “What the hell’s wrong with expressing yourself”.

It’s a show with two real world stories at it’s core, Billy and his new found love for dance and what it does to him (listen to “Electricity” to fully understand how it makes him feel), but also this mining commuity in turmoil with the mining strike, but also how the two narratvies go hand in hand. There are some real good upbeat numbers in this show like “Merry Christmas Maggie Thathcer”, but you then also have songs like “The Letter” and “He Could Be A Star” which pretty much get me in tears everytime. It’s a very well balanced show, Elton John and Lee Hall smashed it with this show. Great music, lyrics and book. And what a great adaptation of the 2000 film of the same name starring Jamie Bell and Dame Julie Walters.

Decade by decade musical of the day: Falsettos (1992)

A song to appreciate frm the show: You Gotta Die Sometimes

Standout lyrics from the show: Who would I be if I had not loved you? (What Would I Do?)

Why I love this show: First of all, this show has some of the most beautiful music. Songs like ”What Would I Do” are ones you need to just listen to in the context of the show and appreciate, the beauty of the lyrics, the orchestration, the delivery, everything about it. When I was writing the song to appreciate part above deciding just one was so hard, so many great songs like, “The Games I Play”, “I’m Breaking Down”, “The Thrill of First Love”. William Finn really has created a beautiful, heart touching show with Falsettos. And the fact it won the Tony award for both Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score only further backs what I said about the music. It’s a longer show to listen to, coming in at about 2 hour 13 minutes, as it’s a sung-through musical so you’re getting the entire show just by listening to the cast recording, and it’s worth every minute. I personally think the 2016 Broadway Cast Recording starring Andrew Rannells is simply great.

The one thing that stands out the most to me about this show though is the story and the themes of the show. With the show talking about the themes of Jewish Identity, gender roles and gay life in the late 70’s and early 1980’s. Also touching on the AIDS epidemic. A really gripping show with a strong gripping story throughout. This isn’t your jazz hands and frills kind of musical that’s for sure. I don’t want to give too much away, all I will say is go give it a listen, or a watch even. There’s free versions of this show on Youtube, and if you have not already watched/listened to this show then I highly recommend you add it to the list.

Decade by decade musical of the day: Blood Brothers (1983)

A song to appreciate from the show: Tell Me It’s Not True

Standout lyrics from the show: Did you ever hear the story of the johnstone twins, as like each other as two new pins. How one was kept and one given away, how they were born, and they died, on the self same day? (The Council Chamber)

Why I love this show: This is was what I class as the show that got me wanting to do theatre, before that it was only ever Primary School Eisteddfod Can Actol stuff I had done. I had seen Billy Elliot and loved it, and had seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, but this show just drew me in. I remember studying the show in school briefly, and loving every lesson we done on it, which made me want to read the whole show And then I got to see the show itself in 2019. And it was well worth the wait.

One amazing show. I was on the edge of my seat, gripped the entire way through. It does have it’s more light hearted moments with adults playing kids, and the entertainment that itself can provide, but the heavier moments really had me holding back the tears and are the stand out moments for me. Especially the ending (no spoliers) and the section in act two where Mickey is searching for his tablets and comes out with the line, “That’s why I take them. So I can be invisible”, that scene between Mickey and Linda left me lost for words, jaw dropped in awe of what I was watching. W***y Russell, what a masterpiece this show is by him.

A dream show of mine to do, and Mickey is probably a part I would consider a dream role. Such a depth to the characters in this show, in ways I think not even the characters understand.

Decade by decade musical (well it’s actually a Rock Opera but yeah) of the day - Jesus Christ Superstar (1970 concept album, 1971 Broadway)

A song to appreciate from the show: Gethsemane

Standout lyrics from the show: Don't let me stop your great self-destruction. Die if you want to you misguided martyr. I wash my hands of your demolition. Die if you want to you innocent puppet. (Trail Before Pilate).

Another favourite few lyrics of mine - One thing i’ll say for him, Jesus is cool. (This Jesus Must Die)

Why I love this show: What an incredible show. Simply put, it is AMAZING. I have done this show twice, and it is just such a great show to do. Great for being in the cast, great being in tne chorus. Getting to experience both cast and chorus has made me love the show more. Some truly iconic songs in this show. With songs like “Gethsemane”, “Heaven On Their Minds”, “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” still just as popular with performers now as they were in the 70’s. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice really smashed it out of the park with this one. I find it interesting to look at various productions and how they all have unique qualities, from the period they set it in, the set, costumes, even the sound of it all and the different crosses used for Jesus. So many good options. Plus, Tim Minchin. Bit of a “marmite” Judas, but I love him as Judas.

I could write a full essay on this show, and the fun that was had putting it on, but I will not do that to you all don’t worry. But I feel like saying everyone who done this show with Colstars in 2016, loved doing the show. One that nobody will be able to forget. I always remember standing there, waiting for the curtain to close at the end of the show, with the chills of “WOW” shooting tnrough my body every time.

Decade by decade musical of the day - Hello, Dolly! (Premiered in 1964)

A song to appreciate from the show: Put on Your Sunday Clothes

Standout lyrics from the show: It only takes a moment, for your eyes to meet and then your heart knows in a moment you will never be alone again (It Only Takes a Moment)

Why I love this show: This is one that has grown over me the last 4-5 years, a show I never really get tired of listening to. It’s soundtrack is also shorter than a loooooot of other musicals averaging at about 55 minutes.

The Overture always puts me in a good mood and at the moment it just reminds me of the curtain being lifted/opened at the start of a show and that moment where we all sink back in to our seats ready to take in everything that’s about to happen.

This is a show with a real solid female lead in Dolly Gallagher Levi, who has been portrayed by some greats over the year from Carol Channing back in 1964 in its premiere to Bette Midler in the 2017 Broadway revival. Both winning Tony Awards for their portrayal. Also not forgetting about the main man hismelf, Horace Vandergelder. And while we talk about the men of the show, Cornelius and Barnaby being some of my favourites, seem like great parts to play. “Put On Your Sunday Clothes” is one of my all time favourite songs in musical theatre. Always gets me tapping my foot and singing along. Just puts me in a good mood. Makes me want to go to New York and just take it all in.

Such a shame we didn’t get to do the show back in November of last year, this would have been a great show to do. Would have loved to be a part of this. Hopefully one day in the future we will get to revisit it.

The decade by decade musical of the day: My Fair Lady (1956)

A song to appreciate from the show: Wouldn’t It Be Loverly

Standout lyrics from the show: “And oh! The towering feeling,
Just to know somehow you are near” (On the Street Where You Live)

Why I love this show: Now I will be honest, this is bit of a new show in my regular playlist, so not gonna pretend I know a lot about it. But if you’re thinking about some of the most classic and influential musicals, then “My Fair Lady” deserves it’s spot on that list. The fact it had a 9 year run on Broadway and a 6 year and 9 month tour, well if that doesn’t show the impact the show had I don’t know what will. Was even called “the perfect musical” by Mark Steyn in his book “Broadway Babies Say Goodnight: Musicals Then and Now”. Some incredible music in this show, with some great numbers for both male performers, “I’m an Ordinary Man” being a personal favourite and also great for female performers with songs such as “I Could Have Danced All Night”. To put this show simply, it’s about to two people who make each other’s lives a little bit more “loverly”. For any people who have never heard of this show, or have never got around to giving it a good listen, then make sure to add this to your playlist.

MUSICAL OF THE DAY - DECADE BY DECADE.
Over the next 8 days, we are going to keep brining you our musical of the day. But to spice it up a little bit, every day we are going to work our way up through the decades. Soooo, where better to start than what’s know as the “Golden Age” of Musical theatre. Will ring you one from the 40’s today and one from the 50’s tomorrow.

Musical of the day: Carousel. (Premiered in 1945)

A song to appreciate from the show: Soliloquy (Special mention to “If I Loved You” of course.)

Standout lyrics from the show: Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart. And you'll never walk alone. (You’ll Never Walk Alone)

Why we love this show: In my honest opinion, this is Rodgers & Hammerstein’s best show. There is a great mix with the songs throughout the show. You have some classic theatre heavy hitters like “If I Loved You” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and then some more up beat numbers like “June is Bustin’ Out All Over” and “Blow High, Blow Low” to give you a bit of everything throughout the show. Ticks all the boxes. I also think the show does have some solid chorus numbers throughout, which is always a bonus. But ..... not only does the show have one hell of a historic score, it also has some great scenes, like the death of Billy just to name one. One scene that always gives me goosebumps when I think back to doing the show. Another show that has stood the test of time, really shows the longevity of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s work. With the original cast recording being incredible, but also the the 2018 Broadway revival being just as incredible.

When we done this show with Colstars back in 2017, I had no expectations going in to the show, it wasn’t one I knew really well at the time. And by now I would say it is one of my favourite shows I’ve done with Colstars since joining in 2013. A fun show to do, but one with some great moments within the show for any performer.

Musical of the day: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

A song to appreciate from the show: A Little Priest (And not forgetting “Prelude / The Ballad of Sweeney Todd”)

Standout lyrics from the show: At last my arm is complete again (My Friends / The Ballad of Sweeney Todd)

Why I love this show: First of all Stephen Sodheim is one of the all time greats. And this show is strong evidence why that statement is true. Some incredible music, one of Sondheim’s most complex scores. The show has some real dark and gritty characters, and a dark and gritty storyline to go alongside that. If you’re a fan of theatre for the fun and the jazz hands and the light hearted things, this show probably isn’t one for you. If you’re a fan of a darker, heavier show, with death and blood and even a few human pies thrown in there, then this is one for you. With Waitress, you leave wanting to go and eat some pie, this show makes you never want to eat or look at a pie again.

The “Prelude / The Ballad of Sweeney Todd” is one of the best openers in all of musical theatre in my opinion. With the Ballad appearing throughout the show. Sondheim actually utilised the ancient “Dies Irae” for the Ballad. Some real great songs right through out the show. Mrs.Lovett and Sweeney Todd are two incredibly well constructed characters, with a real interesting relationship between the two. Not forgetting some greats parts in the show like Johanna, Anthony, Judge Turpin, Tobias, Adolfo Pirelli and Beggar Woman (Lucy Barker).

This was also my first ever musical I done back in my time in Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun when I was in year 9, so I have my own personal love for this show. This is the show that made me want to join Colstars. Would love to do it again sometime in the future.

Musical of the day: My Land’s Shore

A song to appreciate from the show: I Know I Love Him (Special mention to “My Land’s Shore”)

Standout lyrics from thhe show: We will raise the flag of freedom, and let it fly for evermore! (Finale)

Why we love this show: Why don’t we love this show would probably be an easier question to ask. First of all the music...... the music in my opinion is some of the most beautiful music there is. Every song has a place and a meaning in the show. Every song is great, with some incredible lyrics. Some great characters, some really proud characters to be seen in this show. It’s a show that has got a lot of heart and a drive at it’s core. For me though, the most important part of this show, is the story. It’s the story about Dic Penderyn, I think the way they describe the show on the shows website is just great, nails it on the head. “An ordinary man of conviction and integrity borne along by the wheels of history in extraordinary times became the first martyr of the Welsh working class.” It’s simply perfect for me. I implore you, go give it a listen, you will not regret it. America has Hamilton, France has Les Miserables...... Wales has My Land’s Shore.

19/03/2021

Musical of the day: 13

A song to appreciate: A Little More Homework

Standout lyrics from the show: And if your heart is always breaking, cause the world is just not fair. When you’re at your worst, your friend’s the first one there. Giving you something to lean on. And that’s what it means to be a friend (What It Means to Be a Friend)

Why we love this show: To put it simple.... it’s just great. It talks about being young and some of the challenges you face at that age. As you see in the show Evan Goldman is dealing with his parents’ divorce, his impending Bar Mtizvvah, and having to navigate the complicated social circles of a new school. Also has that coming of age side of it all, like it says at the start of the show, “I'm becoming a man. I don't know what "a man" really means” and then towards the end of the show, after his Bar Mitzvah Evan starts to understand what growing up really means. Great show for a young audience and really relatable for a younger audience, not something you always see in musical theatre. Some incredible songs, and great to see a show where the young people are actually played by young actors.

And, although I wasn’t in this show when Colstars Youth done a production of the show back in November of 2010, everyone who was, always talk about how much they loved that show. So this one is for all those that were in the show.

Musical of the day - Oklahoma!

A Song to appreciate from the show - Oh, What a Beautiful Morning (Give the original version starring Alfred Drake a listen and the give the 2019 Broadway Cast Recording version starring Damon Daunno a listen)

Stand out lyrics from the show - We know we belong to the land. And the land we belong to is grand.

Why we love this show - Simply one of the all time classics of musical theatre really. I mean look how many times it’s been revived and toured since its premiere in 1943. It has for sure stood the test of time. They have also done a great job keeping it fresh over its 78 year life span. Don’t believe me? Then go give the Original Cast Recording a listen then go to the 2019 Broadway Cast Recording to see how they managed to bring a new twist to the show, let us know what you think of the twist director Daniel Fish added to the show. Some people were fans, others would rather it be left untouched and unchanged.

Some great songs, some great characters and not forgetting the brilliant overture and the ballet scene. Also worth noting that Oklahoma! (Rodgers and Hammerstein) is often credited with birthing the modern musical. If you wanna know more about that, then go give this a read. https://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/how-oklahoma-birthed-the-modern-musical/amp/

Our musical of the day - In the Heights
A song to appreciate from the show - 96,000 (special mention to “Blackout” as well)
Stand out lyrics from the show - In the heights I hang my flag up on display (Lo le lo le lo lai lai lo le!) It reminds me that I came from miles away! (My family came from miles away)
Why we love this show - First of all its Lin-Manuel Miranda and I think it’s well documented me and Elis are big fans of his work. Secondly, it’s just such a lively, fun, fast paced show, with the occasional slower song to break it all up. You can see throughout the show how proud they all are as characters of their own heritage as well, especially with the use of Spanish in the lyrics, and the Spanish influence on the music is a real nice touch. Some great songs, some real upbeat numbers and a real good story of community and belonging and national pride at it’s heart. One to check out for sure.

As a side comment a new trailer was released last night for the upcoming “In the Heights” film that is due to be released June 18th this year. So go check that out.

Hope you’re all having a great weekend and a Happy Mothers Day to all you wonderful Mothers, Grandmothers, Great Grandmothers and women of our families in general. So todays Musical of the day.

Our musical of the day -Pippin

A song to appreciate from the show - Extraordinary

Stand out lyrics from the show - Rivers belong where they can ramble. Eagles belong where they can fly. I've got to be where my spirit can run free. Got to find my corner of the sky. - Corner of the Sky

Why we love this show - It’s a show that has a lot of nice songs. Such as “Love Song”, “With You”, “Kind of Woman” and “I Guess I’ll Miss the Man”. Some great vocals on the cast albums, personal favourite being Matthew James Thomas who played Pippin in the 2013 Broadway Revival and is on the New Broadway Cast Recording. And the show has a great aesthetic with the whole circus presentation. One to go give a listen for sure. And give it a search on YouTube and see what you can find.

My standout song from the show: Santa Fe
My standout lyrics from the show: If we stand as one someday becomes somehow - “Seize the Day”
Why I love this show: It about the small man standing up to the bigger man. A David vs Goliath sort of thing. And who doesn’t love routing for the underdog. The production is incredible, a great set and some great vocal performances.

And for anyone who has Disney+ there is a stage recording from 2017 starring the one and only, Jeremy Jordan. So go check that out.
