Horizons takes its inspiration from the writer Freya Stark who, shortly before her death in 1993, contemplated the idea of the horizon:

“I think I like to look over the edge and see what’s coming... There’s something that is given to every living creature that has eyes, whether it’s a tiny mosquito or an elephant, and that’s a horizon. And the world is divided between the people to whom the hori

zon is something they want to get over and see what’s beyond, and the people who feel that the horizon is their safety and it keeps them protected. And I’m one of the people who like to look over the horizon and there’s another horizon, and another. And that, I think, is the fascination of life. And the idea of death is still an idea of travelling beyond the last horizon.” – Freya Stark

Our founder Lawrence Ferlinghetti envisioned City Lights as an international project and published authors from all over the world.

Here he is in Paris, in front of our sister store Shakespeare and Company. At City Lights, Lawrence published works by a number of French writers, including Jacques Prévert, Charles Baudelaire, André Breton and René Daumal.
