Hello artist,

🫸At the moment, social networks are overflowing with videos of people who are neither professional polymerists nor chemists, using acetone on artistic clays (especially polymer clay) without knowing how dangerous this product is 😱

⛔Acetone is a highly toxic product: it penetrates hyper-easily through the skin and attacks the central nervous system.

🙅‍♀️Il can only be used on polymer clay in very special cases and with the appropriate protective equipment.

Always keep a critical eye: just because someone has a lot of content or thousands/millions of subscribers on the networks or on YouTube doesn't mean that he or she is properly trained or holds the absolute truth. In fact, it's usually quite the opposite (a teacher spends much more time researching new techniques, doing long-term tests... than publishing on the networks).

In most cases, you can use household alcohol:
↪️️it will remove dust from your raw clay or degrease your baked polymer in the same way as acetone while being much less toxic.

Acetone does nothing more than household alcohol already does. Take care of yourself.

Hello artist,

🤔Many beginners think that if the clay is well baked then it is flexible 🤔

This is a popular belief, or rather a generalization of a particular case, conveyed by social networks 🛜

🤸Polymer clays' flexibility once baked has nothing to do, for the majority, with whether they're well baked or not. Read the carousel!

Hello artist,

🎨 Discover the different polymer clay brands' characteristics! 🎨

1 - Fimo: Suitable for all ages and projects (jewelry, miniatures, sculptures, canvas). The Professional range is appreciated for its resistance, color holding and slight flexibility after baking, although messy. The softer Soft and Kids ranges are ideal for occasional creations by hobbyists.
2 - Sculpey: Very popular in the USA, easy to work with. The Premo range is renowned for its magnificent colors. The Accents and Souffle ranges are ideal for thin layers, while Sculpey III is not recommended because of its fragility. After baking, it is slightly more flexible than Fimo.
3 - Pardo: Renowned for being the most transparent translucent clay after baking, Pardo is a beeswax-based polymer clay. Pleasant to work with, ideal for glass or gemstone effects. Its white is the best. Slightly flexible after baking (like Sculpey).
4 - Kato: Professional artist's clay, durable and ideal for fine details. Very firm, it doesn't stick or warp. Colors remain stable during baking. Its polish gives an incomparable shine. Disadvantages: its white color yellows during baking and it has a peculiar odor.
5 - Cosclay: A revolutionary hybrid plastic/rubber polymer clay that retains high flexibility after baking. Ideal for fine, delicate parts with no risk of breakage, such as stop-motion characters, articulated figurines and dioramas. We'll be bringing you a product test of this clay in magazine n°40 to experiment fully with its properties.

30/05/2024

Hello artist,

❓Many beginners are unaware of this or are unfortunately misinformed
❌ Polymer clay absolutely does not need to be protected by varnish, resin or other protective additives!
✔️ Once baked polymer clay is perfectly waterproof (water resistant), shock and scratch resistant, does not tarnish, does not degrade over time...

There are only TWO reasons why you should use protection on polymer clay:
1️⃣ To obtain a particular finish: gloss, satin or matt. Sanding and polishing are still the best way to obtain this type of finish, but it is sometimes not possible to achieve it as on textured or modelled pieces ⛰️

2️⃣ In order to protect the surface treatments you have applied to the clay, such as powders (pigments, pastels, micas...), metal sheets (copper, aluminium), paints, glitter, waxes (although for the last 3 elements it is not usually necessary)...

Save yourself the problems of yellowing, flaking, wasted time, unnecessary expense, frustration and disasters associated with using varnishes or resins on polymer clay... unless you really need to use it.

If you want to know all the secrets of finishing, we recommend the excellent courses from 'une Alchimie - Formations à l'argile polymère, which will teach you or enable you to perfect 💪 all your finishes 💎 (different backs, edges, bails, multiple surface finishes...).

24/05/2024

Hello artist,

Soap and water are not effective for cleaning polymer clay, pigments and associated substances that we use in our art. You can use baby wipes but that often creates a lot of waste (not great for the planet).

On the other hand, household alcohol is effective.

No, it's not the kind you drink, nor is it isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol), which is widely used in the USA but is twice as toxic, nor methylated spirits. It's ethanol (the least dangerous form of alcohol) diluted to 70%, the kind we can use for our household chores, the kind contained in hydroalcoholic gels or the kind that hospitals and laboratories use every day to clean or disinfect.

Household alcohol dissolves polymer clay, inks, acrylic paints (even dry ones), pigments, pastels, liquid clay (although acetone is more effective but more dangerous)... It's an excellent solvent and works VERY well as a cleaning agent for your polymer clay tools (including pasta machine) and work surface.

It also works wonders for removing fingerprints or lint from your raw polymer clay creations but be carreful not to use a lot because it dries polymer clay.

Alcohol won't ruin your manicure or dissolve your tools.

In Europe, this alcohol is available in any supermarket or DIY shop (even more since the health crisis, as it destroys bacteria and viruses, including the COVID virus) with or without perfume (which does not affect its effectiveness at all).

Are you a fan of household alcohol or not?

Hello artist,

When we were working on the new version of the magazine, one of the things we felt was important was to structure the magazine and give it a guiding thread, because we found the old version a bit ''cluttered, chaotic''.

So we decided to give each magazine a theme and to create all the articles and tutorials around that theme.

2 years later, it's time to take stock. We hesitate to keep themes for future magazines. So we need your opinion:
Should we keep the themes?
Should we go back to a version without a theme?
If you have any other ideas or desires for improving the magazine, please share them with us!

06/04/2024

Hello artist,

The release of the magazine No. 39 " Abysses and Oceans " has been postponed to July 2024.
As you may have noticed, we haven't been very present on social media at the start of the year for 2 reasons:
◾We are now only 2 people in the team
◾We've been focusing on organising the Essentielles du Bijou trade show, which took place in Bordeaux (France) in March

Creating a magazine takes a lot of time and personal investment ⌚💪 (research, tests, writing articles, retouching images and tutorial texts, interviews, multiple corrections, page layout ✍️ etc.). With only 2 of us left ( we were 5 at the end of 2023), the workload has increased considerably 🏋️‍♀️, forcing us to postpone the release of magazine n°39, initially scheduled for April 2024, to July 2024. We apologise for this inconvenience, but we want to continue to offer you a magazine of exceptional quality 🥇, with exclusive tutorials, expert advice and testimonials, quality information, inspiration and entertainment...not a slapdash magazine.

Furthermore, if anyone is interested in joining us on this adventure, we're open to suggestions!👯‍♀️

With all our creative passion,
Allison and Julie

Hello artist,

Very busy at the start of the year preparing for the Les Essentielles Du Bijou show but we're not at all sorry we took the time to create a lovely stand in collaboration with Com'une Alchimie - Formations à l'argile polymère ,meeting passionate and curious jewellery designers as well as raw materials professionals and experts during the show.

It was great and we're going to try to do more shows so that more and more people can discover our beautiful magazine.

So see you soon in person.

Hello artist,

Find your Poly'cards in every Polymère & Co magazine. Poly'cards are 2 types of collectible cards:

◾Polymer clay colour recipe cards
↪️2 cards per magazine
↪️1 colour available in 6 shades (3 light and 3 dark). In magazine #38, purple is in the spotlight with 3 light purple colours (crocus, lavender, lilac) and 3 dark purple colours (currant, crazy plum, black violet)
↪️️For each shade, you have the recipe for the mix to make in 5 brands of polymer clay: Fimo, Sculpey, Kato, Pardo, Cernit
↪️Each recipe is based on primary colours
Now it's your turn to enjoy unique shades without having to buy dozens of packs of different colours!

◾Inspiration cards
↪️4 cards per magazine
↪️Imagined as a game to boost your inspiration, these cards come in 5 different thematics: Themes, Techniques, Colours, Types of creations and Emotions
↪️ Each card reveals a word and its definition
↪️The aim of the game is to place the 5 packs of cards in front of you and randomly draw 1 to 5 cards to guide you in the making of your creations. For example, you can choose to place the "Themes", "Techniques" and "Colours" packs in front of you and draw the cards that will give you "Fairy", "Mica Shift", "Violet": there you go to imagine a piece of jewellery or an object with these 3 characteristics.
Ideal for challenging yourself, organising challenges with your friends or if you lack inspiration!

Do you like these cards? Are they useful? Or not? Let us know what you think in the comments, because we've put a lot of time and energy into creating these cards, which we could use for other things if most of you don't find them useful.

Creative kisses,
The whole team
