FASHION COLLABORATION ANNOUNCED
A collaboration that hopes to catapult Fiji’s fashion industry to greater heights was announced yesterday between Fiji Fashion Week (FJFW) and the Fijian Designer Association (FDA).
As a result, FDA will be the face of Fiji Fashion Week 2018, and will be referred to in all promotional and media advertising, while the FJFW brand will manage event logistics, promotions and financial matters.
The announcement was made during the opening of a “Business of Fashion” workshop in Nabua yesterday, themed “Made in Fiji, New Horizons, Going Global”.
“We understand FJFW’s primary stakeholder is the designer community and it makes sense that the FDA and FJFW come closer together to ensure an alignment of interests and a cooperative approach,” FJFW Managing Director, Ellen Whippy-Knight said.
While opening the workshop, chief guest and owner of the international brand KooKaii, Rob Cromb, told local fashion designers one must work tirelessly to succeed in the industry.
He said if someone born in Fiji like him and grew up in the village could make it big in the fashion industry and own companies in 12 countries around the world, then there was no reason why workshop participants could not.
A Fashion Week Advisory Committee has also been established to enhance and facilitate information exchange between the two parties to exploit synergies across activities such as sales, marketing, sponsorships and work opportunities.
“My vision is that FJFW and the FDA will extend its partnership over time, allowing the FDA to become increasingly instrumental in both the management and direction of FJFW,” Ms Whippy-Kinght said.
“In the end FJFW should be a show for signers by designers.”
FDA chairperson Koila Ganilau-Lee said the partnership was an important milestone for the local fashion industry, as it would help address problems faced by local designers.
