CATD Graduation Ceremony Marks Milestone in Training iTaukei Youths

The Centre for Appropriate Technology & Development (CATD) will host its graduation ceremony at the Civic Centre this morning, celebrating the achievements of 31 students from the 2022 cohort. Additionally, 87 students will receive APTC White Card Certification, accredited by the Australia-Pacific Technical College.

Honorable Ifiremi Vasu, Minister for iTaukei Affairs, will be the chief guest, joined by notable VIPs including Australian High Commissioner Ewen McDonald and UNDP Resident Representative Munkhtuya Altangerel.

CATD, a vital institution under the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, has recently gained full registration from the Higher Education Commission of Fiji, allowing it to offer fully accredited courses in automotive engineering, plumbing, welding, carpentry, and 2-stroke engines. Looking ahead to 2024, the institution plans to offer National Qualifications.

In a groundbreaking move this year, CATD introduced TSLS scholarships, transforming the financial landscape for students by providing grant-based sponsorships, removing the burden of school fees.

CATD has collaborated with UNDP and Harryproa to develop a sustainable boat-building curriculum, aligning with its commitment to solving local problems through appropriate technology. The institution acknowledges the support of partners such as APTC, Unitech NZ, HECF, and SPC's EQAP in developing the Green TVET curriculum.

The Japanese Government has granted CATD funds for a new classroom block and dormitory, enhancing facilities and scheduled for completion early next year.

CATD Director Aporosa Silatolu highlighted the graduation's significance, emphasizing the institution's commitment to holistic education. The Nadave New Dawn Cooperative, initiated to provide pathways for graduates, focuses on developing business owners alongside skilled professionals.

UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director Engages with Prime Minister Rabuka

Kanni Wignaraja, the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, embarked on her mission to the Pacific Region by conferring with Honourable Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Suva yesterday.

During her inaugural visit to Fiji, Wignaraja seized the opportunity to highlight the partnership between the Government of Fiji and UNDP, a collaboration that has spanned since 1971. In the meeting, she extended her felicitations to the Prime Minister and the people of Fiji, coinciding with the Fiji Day celebrations, and expressed her hope for ongoing success in fostering unity among the Fijian populace. The conversation delved into UNDP's commitment to assisting the Government in addressing interconnected developmental challenges, including navigating the energy transition, confronting the escalating climate crisis, and enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of public services.

Wignaraja reiterated UNDP's support for bolstering Fiji's institutions and systems to expedite inclusive development through responsive, participatory, and transparent governance processes. She underscored that UNDP is actively endorsing various initiatives geared toward fostering a Blue and Green economic transformation. These include the Fiji Electrification Fund, which seeks to leverage the private sector's involvement in extending renewable energy sources to outlying island communities, and the Blue Bond, along with green/blue accelerator grant schemes designed for social enterprises, which are poised to unlock additional investments and opportunities.

Ms. Wignaraja expressed her optimism regarding Fiji's economic resurgence following the COVID-19 pandemic and stressed UNDP's readiness to collaborate with the Government of Fiji in formulating and executing strategies for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific.

She commended Fiji for its leadership in advocating for global climate action and for extending support to neighboring nations grappling with the existential threat of our time. She added that UNDP's commitment to expanding options for climate finance and investment opportunities, particularly concerning climate adaptation and equitable energy transition, remains resolute.

Wignaraja emphasized UNDP's eagerness to invest in the knowledge, innovation, and skills of the youth, particularly in a nation at the forefront of climate action like Fiji. She expressed the aspiration that these efforts would enable a more sustainable and peaceful future for the coming generations. UNDP continues to stand in solidarity with the Government and the people of Fiji, as well as the broader Pacific region, advocating for more equitable and inclusive human development.

Wignaraja, accompanied by the recently appointed UNDP Resident Representative for the Pacific, Munkhtuya Altangerel, and UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Yemesrach Workie, convened with the Prime Minister for this significant discussion.

Before embarking on her mission to the Pacific, Wignaraja had joined UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner in a meeting with Rabuka and his delegation in New York, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly last month.
