SAFE SPACE FOR WOMEN TO SHARE POWERFUL TESTIMONIES

On the 5th of November, diverse women from around Tavua and Vatukoula convened at the Tavualevu village, to discuss key issues affecting their lives, including domestic violence, digital abuse, and other social challenges.

The meeting provided a safe space for these women (including LGBTQI+ and people living with disabilities) to share powerful testimonies of survival and resilience, highlighting the struggles faced by women in their communities.

As part of the lead-up to the 16 Days of Activism, the women resolved to take collective action to raise awareness and show the people of Tavua and the surrounding areas that enough is enough—violence and abuse in all its forms must end.

By investing in a strong pipeline of women leaders, this initiative not only prepares candidates for upcoming elections but also fosters long-term change in decision-making spaces across Fiji. Together, we are building a generation of women who will transform leadership and advance gender equality for years to come.

femLink Pacific was honoured to have attended the launch of two powerful initiatives led by the Online Safety Commission on 5th November 2025, dedicated to making Fiji’s digital spaces safer for all.

The event saw the unveiling of the Miss Fiji Online Safety Song – “Loving Hands” by Mr. Sam and Grace Vuata, and the official launch of the national toll-free online safety helpline – 1548.

In his address, Mr. Filipe Batiwale, Commissioner for the Online Safety Commission, shared a powerful reminder that “laws alone cannot change a culture. A regulator cannot legislate kindness or love.” His message called on all Fijians to help build a digital culture rooted in compassion, respect, and responsibility.

Ms. Ana Tuiketei, Director of the Miss Fiji Pageant, reinforced the importance of collective action, stating that “safety online is as important as safety in the home, in schools, and at work.” She emphasized that this year’s theme, “Think Before You Click,” is born out of hope, a call for all of us to create a kinder, safer, and more respectful online community.

The “Loving Hands” campaign reminds us that every click carries power, the power to heal, uplift, and inspire. Together, we can ensure our online world reflects the true values of empathy and unity.

AMPLIFYING RURAL WOMEN'S VOICES AND LEADERSHIP FOR CHANGE

The Nadroga District Convening was held at the Nahigatoka Village Hall on Thursday the 6th of November and was attended by 19 diverse women. In attendance were representatives from Rainbow Pride Foundation (RPF), Fiji Disabled People's Federation (FDPF), New Vision, Nahigatoka Women's Club, Nahigatoka Youths, Yadua Women's club, Vunatovau Women's club, Nadroga DCOSS, Laselase SSVM, Nadroga Muslim Women's League, and Bavu Youths.

Discussions centered around the theme "AMPLIFYING RURAL WOMEN'S VOICEs AND LEADERSHIP FOR CHANGE" taking into account that women are the backbone or pillar of their homes. Women are at the heart of communities across Fiji and the Pacific.

Women are farmers, caregivers, community leaders and advocates. Yet their contributions are often undervalued and overlooked. Every day, they exercise leadership that strengthens food security, builds climate resilience as well as sustaining their livelihoods.

The common thread connecting all these initiatives is leadership. Participants also took the time to explores how rural Women's roles are highlighted and supported, while acknowledging the barriers to leadership discussing more on challenges they face, when linking all the factors outlined above to the violence against women and girls.

They did not just stop there, but explored possible solutions that could improve the realities they face. The session was inspirational and enjoyed by all because it empowered them to rise another level.

Lami District Network Holds Final Convening for 2025

Friday, 7th November 2025 — Lami:
The Lami District Network gathered today at the Latter-Day Saints Church Hall for the final district convening of the year. Representatives in attendance included members from faith-based organizations, community-based women’s groups, youth groups, and microfinance groups from across the Lami area.

This final convening centered on the theme “Amplifying Rural Women’s Voices and Leadership for Change,” with discussions also highlighting the upcoming 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

During the dialogue, women leaders shared personal stories and reflections on the increasing social challenges affecting families and communities within Lami. Key concerns raised included the persistence of patriarchy, restrictive social norms, discrimination, and gender inequality — all of which continue to hinder women’s leadership and participation.

Participants also noted the growing rise in drug use among youths, leading to increased dependency and crime, as well as a concerning increase in domestic violence within communities.

As the discussions concluded, the network emphasized the need to strengthen the law, bridge the gap between policies and grassroots realities, and empower communities with knowledge and resources to effectively address these challenges.

The convening closed with a renewed commitment from all groups to continue working collaboratively to amplify women’s voices and foster safer, more equitable communities in Lami and beyond.

LEADERSHIP FOR CHANGE

Twenty inspiring rural women leaders came together on Thursday 6/11/25 at the Nausori Market Vendors Hall for a powerful convening under the theme “Amplifying Rural Women’s Voices and Leadership for Change.”

The gathering brought together women from a wide range of groups — community-based women’s and youth organizations, faith-based groups, the Nausori and Korovou Market Vendors Associations, the Women in Dairy Association, Indo-Fijian community women’s groups, and members of LGBTIQ+ networks from across Nausori, Rewa, Tailevu, and Naitasiri.

For many, especially the new participants, the session was both educational and deeply empowering. They shared that the experience motivated them to return to their communities and pass on the lessons they had learned.

Discussions also touched on the 16 Days of Activism, where women courageously shared stories that revealed the harsh reality that violence against women and girls continues in many communities — despite existing policies and frameworks meant to protect them.

Another key issue raised was the need for more women in leadership roles. Many participants expressed that a lack of support at the community level often discourages women from stepping into leadership positions. Still, there was a shared sense of hope and determination that this will change — that more women will rise, lead, and inspire others to do the same.

Together, the women left the convening feeling motivated, connected, and ready to lead change in their communities.

Discussions also included the 16 Days of Activism, its history and what it stands for which brought about stories of struggle, abuse, sacrifice and the different coping mechanisms of survival which were often silenced. LEADERSHIP FOR CHANGE

16 Diverse women gathered together at the District Officer's office in Nadi on the 31st of October for the Nadi District convening. Diverse Women that attended were representatives from the Narewa Women's club, Nabila Community, Nakavu Youth, Nabila Youth, Navakai HART, Rainbow Pride Foundation (RPF) Nadi, Nado FDPF, Fiji Muslim League, Veilomani Women's Club and Tubeinasolo Women's Club.

With the theme "Amplifying Rural Women's voices and Leadership for Change", women found the convening to be empowering and motivating. The new participants, who attended for the first time, found the session educational and said that it really empowered them to go back and share all they had learnt.

Discussion also centered around the 16 days of activism which brought out some sad truths about some women still facing violence in their communities. Despite having policies and frameworks in place to support VAWG, women still face violence.

Another important element that was highlighted was the need to have more women in leadership. Sadly, most of these women are not provided the right support in their communities which discourage them from taking up leadership positions. It is with great hope that this be improved in the near future.
