Empowering Pacific women goes beyond journalism—it's about reshaping narratives and fostering inclusivity.

Initiatives like the Women In Media Fiji mentoring program, supported by Women in Media Australia, create safe spaces for Pacific media women to discuss their careers. Through collaboration, mentees identify goals and challenges, paving the way for a more inclusive media landscape.

Rosi Tamani-Doviverata and Kathy McLeish discuss the program’s next phase of growth and the potential for international collaboration. https://buff.ly/3viIsIb

Ensuring all local voices are heard makes for far more powerful reporting.

Three days of unlearning and relearning to become people-centered, values-based leaders. Thank you to The Asia Foundation, Pacific Media Assistance Scheme, our editors, and the Fijian Media Association for enabling us to be part of the Fiji symposium, where we met fellow emerging leaders and seasoned leaders, learning from each other at the FMF Legacy Leadership Symposium 2024 that concluded today at the Sofitel on Denarau Island in Nadi. Leadership means putting others before self, transcending titles or hierarchy, and becoming a positive influence in all aspects of life. While the curtains may have fallen here at the Sofitel at the conclusion of the three-day symposium, it is also day one of our journey as CEOS.

The use of technology-facilitated gender-based violence is a concerning trend for women in Fiji.

While speaking during the Fijian Media Association’s Women In Media organised International Women’s Day event at Harbour Point Convention Centre in Lami, Executive Director for Femlink Pacific, Fay Volatabu says women continue to endure cyber-bullying where explicit photos are shared on social media.

As we celebrate the achievements of women this week, and on the eve of International Women’s Day 2024, we also confront a serious issue: Technology-facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV)"

Members of the Women in Media Fiji, with the support of our parent body, the Fijian Media Association, gathered in Lami, in a hybrid event, to reflect on the transformative power of technology and the challenges it brings with a panel discussion titled, "Empowering Women in the Digital Era - Combating Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence."

The event heard from femLINKpacific Executive Director Fay Volatabu, Acting Online Safety Commission Chairperson Tajewashri Devi, Dept of Women's Reijieli Mawa, and seasoned journalist from PNG, Belinda Kora.

Ms. Volatabu shared real-life survivor stories. In April, FemLINKpacific will unveil their TFGBV research, focusing on Fiji and the Power Up project countries. She also elaborated on the kind of work her organization and others in the NGO space do to support and raise awareness about the issue at the grassroots.

Ms Devi highlighted the digital space’s role in fostering inclusion and safety. She defined TFGBV and discussed cybersecurity measures, as well as legal frameworks and the gaps therein in efforts to address gender-based violence perpetrated via the internet/online.

Ms Kora, representing Media Organisation/WiM and PNG Media, shared experiences of women in media facing online harassment, and ethical reporting practices, and discussed media literacy programs.

Ms Mawa, from the Department of Women, discussed government initiatives combating online gender-based violence. She also shared about the National Action Plan scheduled to be implemented gradually, starting this year, and how the media has been identified as a critical vehicle in addressing TFGBV.

More than 100 people turned up for the event, and we had the privilege of hosting the Deputy High Commissioner of Australia, Clare McNamara, and Sandra Kraushaar, The Asia Foundation Regional Representative Pacific Islands. Our Power Up project lead, James Sinclair, and journalists from all major media houses in Fiji and other guests were also in attendance.

Fiji TV's show 'Na Ketekete nei Nau' was at the venue and aired live from the venue, a first for WiMFiji, to talk about our topic today with some of our members in the iTaukei dialect.

Our members came away enthused to Educate, Advocate, and Empower - from an insightful and inspiring discussion held at the Harbour Point Convention Centre today.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our supporters—the Australian High Commission Australia in Fiji and The Asia Foundation The Asia Foundation—for making this event possible. We are grateful to the panellists for an insightful discussion on this "shadow" that blights the positives and good that come with these advancements in the digital landscape. We are also grateful to our Power Up project partners PINA Pacnews for facilitating the participation of our colleagues from the region and other parts of Fiji including the North.

Together, we advocate for change and create a safer digital world.

"You are the most powerful people in Fiji because you are the media."

"Use your power to educate the people of Fiji especially women and children to know what they need to be doing in the case of being exposed to Technology Facilitated GBV."

These words of challenge were issued by Tajeshwari Devi, the Acting Online Safety Commission at the Women in Media Fiji's event to commemorate International Womens Day.

The topic discussed was "Empowering Women in the Digital Era; Combating Technology-Facilitated GBV".

In closing the discussion, Deputy Australian High Commissioner Clare McNamara said that these crimes are rife everywhere and education and awareness is a huge need.

"Boys need to be given alot of attention too in regards to these violent crimes just as much as girls."

"The su***de rates of boys is growing and this is a concern."

The gathering saw close to 100 women gather to learn and discuss this pressing issue.

The event would not have been possible without the support of the Australia in Fiji and the The Asia Foundation

Managing our finances including saving for rainy days is tough. Today in Suva, on a Saturday, some of our members are being taught how to do so by ANZ's Elenoa Buliruarua via the bank's Money-Minded initiative. The session is a follow-up from a Managing Finances session convened in 2023 as part of our monthly development meetups supported by Pacific Media Assistance Scheme
