This is probably my favourite image from the hike I did with Jotaro in Kamikōchi and the Chūbu-Sangaku National Park. It’s taken looking west on the Sunset terrace of the Hotakadake Sansō Mountain Hut, and besides me there were only two other gentlemen standing in the wind looking at the layers and layers of mountains and clouds. It was beautiful, lonely and cold.

Have you heard of Samarkand?

I hadn’t before my trip to Central Asia, but images I saw online made me really excited! Lonely Planet even wrote that “if you’d visit only one city in Central Asia, make it Samarkand!”.

After having visited it I can say it’s definitely worth a visit, as the old mosques 🕌, madrassah and mausoleums are gorgeous to behold. The skill and craftsmanship which went into these buildings hundreds of years ago is fascinating, and there are many gorgeous details to be found on all of the buildings.

Our favourite location was the Shah-i-Zinda Mausoleum. It’s a collection of tombs through the ages, all with beautiful mosaics, amazing ceilings and the whole complex is just calm, relaxing, beautiful and very, very beautiful.

Be aware that Samarkand is ☀️🔥🥵 in the summer and the best time to visit is between September and November when it is cooler. We had temperatures above 35°C and it was scorching, we pretty much kept to the shade whenever possible and drank heaps. But Samarkand in Uzbekistan is definitely worth a visit - best more than a day 🤣😎

Photo Dump

I’m now since a week back home and still think all the time about the amazing moments I shared with our Guides Karomat, Fasli & Borbad and my friends Jessie and Val while hiking for ten days through the Fann Mountains ⛰️ of Tajikistan. There were lots of ups - climbing up a pass a day :) - and also some downs (my iron stomach couldn’t handle whatever it was that made me sick 💩).

This was a trip of a life-time and I loved it. Hiking with local guides Fasli and Karomat meant we were invited into every yurt along the way for yoghurt, tea 🫖 and bread, they knew the best camping spots ⛺️ (see image 4!) and surprised us with delicious vegetarian meals for dinner and breakfast. Our main guide Borbad didn’t get tired answering our questions and helping us learn Tajik, and Val & Jessie were superb travel companions whom I loved sharing this adventure with 💜

📷 1 - Selfie on the 3786 m high Alauddin Pass.

📷 2 - Our trustworthy donkeys 🫏 on the road to Zimtud village.

📷 3 - Apricots were growing everywhere and were a great snack.

📷 4 - The best Camping Spot ⛺️ in the World at Night.

📷 5 - Alauddin Lakes from the Air

📷 6 - At the Mutiny Lake looking up to Chimtarga.

📷 7 - Hiking down the valley from Alauddin Lakes.

📷 8 - Last morning ☀️

A big thanks goes out to USAID who covered our flights, the International Finance Corporation for our transportation, and Faridun & the travel companies Panjakent-intour and Rasul Tour who took care of us in the Fann Mountains, Dushanbe, Panjankent and Samarkand!

Expect a Video on Youtube and a blog post in the near future =)

Tutorial for taking photos of the ! 💾 Save this Post for reference!

With almost any camera you can take photos of the Northern Lights ⭐️🌈 - if you know the right settings! I made an in-depth video (find it via the link in my Bio) if you want more infos, otherwise just follow follow this tutorial and settings and start taking photos of !

1. Switch Camera to M / Manual
2. Switch Focus to M / Manual
3. Switch Focus Magnifier On
4. Switch Focus Peaking Colour On (Red)
5. Adjust Exposure Time according to need
6. Adjust Aperture - smaller Number is Better
7. Adjust ISO - between 400 and 1.600
8. Turn OFF Noise Reduction + Image Stabilization
9. Set White Balance to Sunny

As for exposure time - anywhere between 2 - 4 seconds if it’s a strong shows to 10 - 30 seconds for weaker Northern Lights is fine. Shorter exposure bring out more shapes in your images, longer ones make them visible and big. What you pick depends on your own artistic preference.

This photo was taken with the Sony GMaster 14 mm f/ 1.8 Lens, which is absolutely fantastic. Currently I am using the 12 - 24 mm GMaster 2.8 Lens, which is equally fantastic.

If you have additional questions or tips - just leave them in the comments.

A few weeks ago I was hiking in the Fürstentum Liechtenstein with my best friend Martin, and while this photo does look very wintery it actually was still autumn 🍂! We were considering hiking an high-alpine route 🏔 but with pretty high snow early in the fall we decided to go a lower route - thankfully public transportation in this wee country is fantastic and there’s also very many great trails so it was easy to find an alternative hike! More about Liechtenstein in the spring and soon in my Insta Stories 🎥

Saturday morning and I’d rather be hiking in the Valbona Valley 🇨🇭🏔☀️ than cleaning up my garden to make it ready for winter 😁

We had a great wee hike with Chloe, Claudia, Kristen and Olivia, and I am looking forward to return to Ticino to see more of its valleys and mountains!

What would you rather today than what you’re doing?

Drones are overrated. I mean, who really sees these landscapes from this perspective except the Eagles and Gyrfalcons living here?

Last day in for a while and took our amazing guests up snowy Saana. Views on the way up were insanely good, the oranges, yellows, reds, browns and greys of forests & fjells and the deep blues of the lake are simply a joy to look at, also in the rain.
