Handcrafted Labs Gennadii Burzak's Islander review by Tommi Langen, Tape Over Mastering
"Islander - mastering grade Vari-Mu compressor with parallel compression. Simply put, you can compress a signal hard and mix back some transients with the uncompressed signal - all in one unit. Even if you're not compressing at all, Islander's tube chain and fancy transformers will give your signal an analog boost resulting in character and depth your mixes definitely will benefit from."
I've never been a big fan of wet-dry processing during the mastering stage. It's not a guessing game with time or energy, and too many options can create a distraction, but to my surprise Islander goes far beyond with its wet-dry processing and opens up many new ways to approach your gain stage. I would rather call it "Dual gain stage tube feeder with time controls" or something along those lines!
Ins and outs
__________
Islander offers two compression modes, which are feedback and feed forward.
Feedback compression feeds the audio signal into the sidechain after the gain reduction. Feed-forward compression feeds the audio signal into the sidechain before the gain reduction. This compressor type reacts to the signal amplitude and adjusts the sidechain signal beforehand.
There's also a time multiplier for the attack and release:
Attack X1:2mS-.3mS-.5mS-.7mS-1mS-2mS-3mS-5mS-7mS-10mS-20mS
Release X1:
100mS-190mS-280mS-370mS-460mS-550mS-640mS-730mS-820mS-910mS-1Sec
Attack: X24mS-.6mS-1mS-1.4mS-2mS-4mS-6mS-10mS-14mS-20mS-40mS
Release X2
200mS-380mS-560mS-740mS-920mS-1,1S-1,28S-1,46S-1,64S-1,82S-2Sec
Sidechain HPF is full range - 75Hz and 150Hz. Tubes are 6к3 (6sk7) and 7n7 tubes on the Wet channel and 6k8 (6sj7) and 7n7 are used on the DRY channel. Three tubes per channel, six tubes in total. Edcor transformers are used on the input transformer and Carnhills on the output transformer. I'm more familiar with Carnhills, Cinemag and Lundhals, but the Edcors did surprise me a lot. They have a tight and fast response, especially in the mids and upper mids region. I have Edcords in my Thermos as well and they sound extremely pleasant, it's like 2dB touch of pure energy. The selection between the tubes and transformers is really well thought out, and they seem to compliment each other very well.
Switches and k***s are really tight, not unpleasently tight, but turning them feels like a handshake from a carpenter. Numbers and values pop out easily and are easy to read. I really appreciate how Handcrafted Labs do their gain values. There are differences in the scale of the dB steps and they seem to be just the right amount in the right place. One dB can be two or even four steps depending where you are in the gain scale.
Stranded on an island

As you know, many of us use compressors for the tonality with very little compression, and Islander is really great for that. With 1-4dB of compression there's this breathing clarity with tube character, and with its added options compression can be set however you want: it can be open, transparent and fast or it can be dark, grabby and slow. It's not the fastest, but it can be fast. And those who know about driving transformers to tubes (or both vice versa) you can really make your impedance to do bunch of weird things, that affects the behaviour of the circuitry!
Stereo image feels open and focused, it doesen't shrink down when compression levels are set high. Saturation and harmonics sound rich, full and excited, and it doesen't do harsh distortion or a tube screamy effect, but it does make things melt in a musical way. Density and thickness are present, but you can still sense the movement between the frequencies and it doesen't completely eat out the transients, if you don't want it to. It all depends on how you set the gain stage: wet-dry gain is where the real action comes from.
The ability to drive the unit in so many combinations makes it special and is why it stands out for me. As a wise man somewhere on the internet once said: - "It's not how loud you make it - it's how you make it loud. "
Pure gain from the tubes and transformers is the healthiest way to increase your LUFS while keeping the compression and limiting artifacts invisible. Of course calibration and your whole chain play a big role, but getting pure controlled gain with very little sacrifice has never been this easy. You get a great tube compression action, but on top of that you'll get a healthy amount of pure unprocessed tube gain to along with it.
You can find many different sweet spots with different gain options. Talking about sweet spots: you can also calibrate the unit in every possible way and dig really deep. In the back of the unit there's two sidechain inserts, ground lift and also sidechain hi-low switches, that can select the sensitivity of the sidechain amplifier, either +4dBU or +18dBU, so that the threshold step is accurate for any operating levels. This switch doesen't affect the impedance or the gain, so you can really fine tune the compression within your chain. There's also additional wet-dry trimmers for finding the desired sweet spot and the trimmers go a loooong way. I was able to drive them in the +12dB range, which opened a new sound palette, and since it's SE design you get the full taste of the tubes.
I feel Islander is more open sounding than Varis, which has a really thick and dark-ish character which is always a trade off in the clarity of the upper mids due to saturation etc. even though it's PP design, which in theory, should be on the cleaner side of things. I feel Varis is a bit more heavier sounding than the Islander. I was expecting Islander to be more rough around the edges and straight forward, but it's actually a really complex and extremely versatile compressor that can create variety of tones due to it's ingenious design.

Islander offers two gain stages with six different tubes and adjustable tube trimmers, two compression modes with three sidechain filters (with ability to run them in different operational sensitivity), dual mono or stereo use, high quality transformers, 3U with everything stepped, 22dBu headroom. What else do you need?
This is spot on for mastering and creating a proper gain stage, which is the key for a good master. First one in the chain and it's a sweet ride after that. Dynamic gain controller with time settings, that doesen't get in the way. Incredible work! I placed an order for a unit of my own and Gena told me that he can make some nice modifications with upgraded parts. I don't honestly even know if I want them or not, because the sound I heard when demoing was the the sound I was after.
And for those who don't know, I have used HCL gear since 2008 on thousands of songs and on the biggest releases of my career. We share a long history, but first and foremost it's based on sound and engineering quality. No paid collabrations, just working towards our goals and aiming to be better at our craft. Real things for all the right reasons. This one is a winner. Heroyam slava!
