After spending this last year connecting with Hmong communities all around the US (thank you- OK, NC, MN, WI, CA!), I wanted to bring my messages back to my own backyard. As a BCBA, I recognize my own limitations and expertise in the arena of parent support so I have enlisted the help of a fellow Hmong mother and LPC- the lovely May Vue.

📖 About May:
Nyob Zoo! My name is May Vue, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Arkansas. With over a decade of experience, I have worked in various settings, including community mental health and semi-private group practice, before launching my own practice, KajSiab Therapy, PLLC in May 2024. As a Hmong-American woman and mental health therapist, I understand the unique challenges and disparities related to mental health in the Hmong culture. Because of this, I am deeply passionate in creating a safe, culturally compassionate space where individuals feel seen, heard, and supported. My hope is to empower them to recognize their strengths, cultivate self-compassion, and navigate their season of life with resilience and peace.

Please share with your family and friends who might benefit from a culturally responsive support group designed with their unique experiences and needs in mind.

🎙 Season 3 Episode 7: CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE BCBAS

Join me for my Season Three FINALE as I chat with my Japanese BCBA colleague, Shino Welch. Discovering the commonalities in our shared Asian heritage and in how we approach disseminating information about ABA on a daily basis while forming a strong base for how to bring this information back to our respective cultural communities has been such a joy for me.

Thank you, listeners and , for joining me on this journey. Wishing you all a very Happy Holidays and joyous New Year! Until next time, take care and be well.

-----

📖 GUEST BIO:
Shino Welch was born and raised in Osaka, Japan. She came to the USA to study at university, where she met her husband, David. Shino and David started their family after Shino graduated from Weber State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Family Studies. Shino and David relocated to different places including Texas, Japan, India, Utah, and Florida while raising their four girls. They settled in Northwest Arkansas in 2015 and plan to stay for a while.

When Shino moved to Arkansas, she worked in schools as a substitute teacher and enjoyed working in special education classrooms. Then she was employed as a paraprofessional in special education classrooms. This is where she was first
introduced to ABA by a former behavior technician. Shino wanted to learn more to help these children.

In her mid-40s, Shino decided to enroll in a Master’s program to be a special education teacher. One of her first classes was Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) which introduced the principles of ABA. She also had a chance to work with a school district BCBA and got interested in becoming a BCBA instead of a special education teacher. She switched schools and her job to work towards becoming a BCBA. Shino graduated with her Master’s degree and also passed the BCBA exam in 2023.

💡 Imagine my surprise and complete utter disbelief when a Hmong psychologist reached out to me and shared that she had been following my little podcast! And not only that, she had taken some notes and would like to add more to the conversation! This was my "little engine that could" dream come true!

💡Three years after speaking this passion project into existence and carrying on many conversations with others about the topic of "what is autism in Hmong?" - I invite you to listen and please share again and again with your Hmong, English and Hmonglish speaking family and friends who have inquired to learn more about autism as spoken from the accomplished Dr. Bee Xiong-Vang.

🎙 Season 3 Episode 3: MY AuDHD DIAGNOSIS

Join me as Mai Nhia sheds light on her experiences of seeking an autism diagnosis as an adult previously diagnosed with ADHD. Ua tsaug os, niam hluas- you inspire me and I look forward to the day when the adult Hmong autism community that you dream of is a reality.

📖 GUEST BIO:

I am 34 and married. I work as a daycare teacher with children from the ages of 6 weeks to 1 year old. I have many hobbies. I enjoy playing video games, watching/listening to true crimes and creating arts and crafts such as painting, sculpting, acrylic nails, making costumes and bullet journaling. When I'm not doing those things I tend to do deep dive research on various subjects.

I had a late diagnosis of ADHD and level 1 ASD. I’m just now learning how to properly navigate my emotions and daily functions, as well as unlearning unhealthy coping mechanisms and behaviors.

I’m very open about my diagnosis and welcome all conversations about it.

💡 October is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Awareness Month

💡 My conversation with Mai Nhia about her journey in seeking her ADHD and Autism diagnoses was so enlightening and inspiring. I've built my podcast around the notion that perhaps the Hmong culture can be prohibiting in nature when it comes to neurodivergence but Mai Nhia's story has convinced me that there are always silver linings. I can't wait for you all to listen to this episode!
