1️⃣4️⃣ In this Episode, we speak with Priscilla Holloway, Registered Massage Therapist. She shares how she uses intraoral massage as a tool to help people manage more than just the symptoms of chronic temporomandibular joint pain, headaches and tension pain.

🤫The secret lies deeper than a deep tissue massage. It lies in the Root Cause. Why is there tension? Why is there muscle compensation? What habits are we doing that has our muscles at war? And what are the effects that these imbalanced muscles are having on our bodies as a whole?

👩‍⚕️👨🏻‍⚕️🧑🏽‍⚕️Priscilla encourages us to find a variety of health care providers that can work together to best stabilize our whole health. Talk about aligning with our mission at Communiteeth!

Priscilla is currently on maternity leave with her third little baby, and so she is not currently practicing. But if you need a recommendation for a massage therapist that works inside the mouth and with the jaw, please send us a message and we can request some options.

Please subscribe and share with your friends and family 🙏🏻

🎙Episode 1️⃣3️⃣ is FINALLY HERE! In this episode, we speak to Dr. Bill Moore, the “House” of the dental world. He is a general dentist who looks through the lens of functional medicine. He works with patients who have taken a lot of different steps in treating their chronic TMJ pain, with little results and feel that they are at a dead end. He looks at blood work and reviews patient behaviors to try to find the root causes of their chronic pain. Then he creates strategies to get them out of pain.

Without being directly asked why chronic TMD pain and migraines are so common, Dr. Bill Moore paints a picture of what life was like for our ancestors, and just how far we have come from those roots. Our foods, lack of movement, poor sleep and the types of stress we now endure are increasing our inflammation and decreasing our health span. He explains that “inflammation is always the elephant in the room.” Sadly, he also painted a picture about cheese. Why we love it so much, but why our health would improve if we didn’t. To our fellow cheese lovers, listen at your own risk.

Episode 12 is LIVE! 🎧
In this episode, we speak with Vanessa Goodchild, Registered Psychologist and founder of Solace Psychology Edmonton. She and her team have extensive training in various strategies and modalities of therapy that can be used to support people navigating change and anxiety.

Vanessa explains how shifting back into work (from the Covid era or otherwise) is a huge and multi layered challenge and how she supports her clients during this transition.

Midway into the episode, we switch into the conversation of fear and anxiety, especially as it pertains to Dentistry. Vanessa paints a metaphoric picture of the brain’s filing cabinet in chaos to better understand the brains response to trauma. Whether it be a patient with a previous traumatic dental experience, or a child with their own fears, the strategy is the same. Vanessa stresses the importance of acknowledging fears, verbally stating the small percentage of chance that will truly happen. Then focusing on positive self talk and celebrating each tiny achievement with joy and pride. With each successful small step, it slowly overrides the fear response. In some cases, addressing the root cause with EMDR therapy is necessary to reorganize the brain’s filing cabinet, providing healing that lasts.

Thank you Vanessa for the work that you do!

🦷 In this episode, Dr. Jonelle Crichton of and .dentistry shares about the importance of early intervention orthodontics. She paints a picture of physical and behavioral symptoms that indicate narrow jaws. With narrow jaws come narrow airways. This narrow facial profile significantly increases the risk for developing sleep disordered breathing and all of the health concerns that arise from it.

👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 Dr. Crichton explains how delaying Orthodontics into the early teens or adulthood limits the armamentarium she has to treat the case. Seeing an orthodontist between the ages of 4-6 allows her to support and optimize the natural development of the skull and jaws.

This episode has connected yet another puzzle piece to the dental - whole health connection.

🤔 Have you ever learnt about your poor behaviors or mannerisms by seeing that your kids have picked up on them and are now doing them too? If that has taught us anything, it's that kids are sponges, and learn more from seeing our actions than from what they are being told.

🎙In this "Com-mini-teeth" episode, Danielle Murray shares about vulnerable parenting. And though it is difficult, it is so important to have real (and age appropriate) conversations with our kids. Ultimately, if we tell our kids that all emotions are accepted, but we never allow them to see us managing our own big emotions and struggles, they might still feel like they are different or wrong for having them.

💪It is normal to have times of joy and times of struggle. It helps to reach out to our circle of people to be heard, seen and supported. Let's include our little ones in this circle.

🙏🏻Thank you Danielle for raising two mental health warriors!

Episode 10 is live! 🎧
Danielle Murray is a mental health warrior. She is also a mother, a wife, a friend, an explorer, an artistic soul, a yoga teacher and training facilitator, a lululemon ambassador, a corporate wellness and communications specialist, she is proud to be a citizen of the Métis nation, and she is medicated.

When we asked her if she could share one message with our community, she said “being medicated is ok. We need to stop defining mental health success as being free from medication.”

In this episode, Danielle explains a little about the vicious cycle of mental health. She shares about her diagnoses, the obstacles, the fears, the victories and the medicine. In some journeys, medicine is in the form of movement, meditation, nutrition, sunshine, and/or therapy, while in others’, medicine is in a pill. All these paths are successes.

Danielle also explains how community support requires more than the mere statement of “we accept you with your mental health issues”. It requires a loving acceptance with a game plan. For example: “these are the ways that we can support you during this time.” If we can all support each other in this way, the connection that is made leads to happiness, health, and loyalty.

Let’s embrace the variety of mental health successes, and remember “Never ever ever give up!”

🎧 Episode 9 is LIVE! 📢
In this episode, we speak with Dr. Jason Hoium, general dentist and creator of Online Exodontia.

He explains why he felt driven to create a continuing education platform to give more insight on dental extractions and what to do when things don't exactly go according to the textbook. He also busts some of the myths around wisdom teeth that we will certainly be using to better educate our patients with. We loved this learning so much that we almost wish we were dentists and could join Online Exodontia.

🎧 In episode 8 “Graeden Goes to Dental School”, Graeden Winkelaar gives us a glimpse into his journey in the University of Alberta’s dental degree program.

📝 Starting off with the application process, we learn it ain't no cake walk! He shares some specific details and challenges about the DAT and the interview process. He is a living example of the quote, "if at first you don't succeed, try, and try again!" That unwavering dedication and determination paid off. ⭐️spoiler alert ⭐️

🦷 Once in the program and starting clinical, he explains that each procedure has its own chapter for learning and practice. He shares an excitement over the "new flavour of the month" as they introduce new clinical skill sets but with that comes confusion such as "how do I even hold that?".

🤓 There is a large dose of modesty, and the instructors don't shy away from being strict and critical. But their guidance is effective and growth focused which in the end helps their students become clinicians.

☺️What is most warming, even under all of this stress and pressured learning, is his sense of optimism and joy about this entire experience in dental school thus far. You can really get a feel for his passion for dentistry and learning.

🛣 Graeden, we are so excited to follow along as you continue throughout your life long journey of Dentistry.
