"Art sends different messages to other people, but design sends the same message to everyone" (Arucan).
This week's guest, Vanilla Arucan, is a self-taught graphic designer based in Manila and a good friend of mine. She believes that graphic design is so much more than looks and that it should also be meaningful and helpful to us as human beings. It's been around five years since I last saw her so it was so fun to catch up with each other! 😌
Vani and I had such an insightful conversation about the origins of her project, Color Story, doing the work that you want to get hired to do, graphic design needing to provide solutions, the difference between art and design, how she attracted clients that resonated with her aesthetic, and the reason she creates visuals.

As human beings, it's natural to crave genuine connection, especially during such an isolating time. I started using Bumble in the latter part of 2020, just for fun and to meet new people but I didn't really expect much to happen. Half a year later, in this episode, I have a conversation with Joshua, my Bumble match-turned-boyfriend, about practical tips on making the most out of dating apps and virtual dating during the pandemic. We talk about our own experiences with Bumble, how to ask engaging questions, letting your match know you like them and showing interest, using tools at hand like voice messages, video calls, and GIFs, moving from dating apps to messaging apps, setting up virtual dates like Netflix Parties and online games, and the magic of being open to whatever comes your way. I hope you guys find this episode useful! And to everyone who's virtual dating right now... STAY STRONG lang tayo!!!

We dedicate so much energy into making the tiniest decisions. What font color should I use? What shoes should I wear? What show should I watch? These seem like simple questions, but when we bring these habits of overthinking and overanalyzing into our creative process and workflow, we find ourselves frozen with indecision and end up not starting projects at all. When we have desires like "I wanna start reading this book" or "I wanna start vlogging", we spend an immeasurable amount of time with questions like "Which online bookstore should I buy from?" or "What camera should I use?" My unsolicited advice is to just START FROM THE BARE MINIMUM. Borrow a book from a friend. Vlog using your phone. Don't let these tiny decisions get the best of you. Get up and start and you'll be surprised that 90% of the time (yes, I made up that percentage), just STARTING something is more than half the battle. Done is better than perfect. 😊

Trying new things can be intimidating and it's usually something we avoid as creatures of habit. But if we bite the bullet and go out of our comfort zone, we might just discover new things about ourselves. In this episode, I talk about new things I've been trying: new shows, books, games, apps, practices. And to celebrate the new podcast artwork, I think about what it was like to start this show back in 2019, how new it felt to me, what's changed since then, and how the idea "done is better than perfect" encouraged me to jump into the world of podcasting. Hopefully, you can apply that mentality in some aspects of your life too. :)
