Did you know that Ethiopians 🇪🇹 drink an average of 200 cups of coffee ☕ a year?

Considering the low GDP per capita and the fact that Ethiopia is one of the major coffee-exporting countries in the world, it's quite an intriguing fact!

Is it coffee time yet? 😁

Although the tradition of hand-grinding is not as popular as it was back in the days, due to simpler electronic alternatives, using uniquely Ethiopian tools like the 'muqecha' and 'zenezena' to pulverize roasted coffee is a powerful element in the whole ritual of Ethiopian coffee-making.

A distinct taste, smell, rhythm, movement and a uniquely human touch are some of the experiences that are hard to miss 😃

Roasting is a central aspect of Ethiopian coffee ceremonies

In fact, one of the key criteria used to judge a coffee maker is how evenly she is able to roast her coffee beans

Different kinds of roasting methods (ranging from flat and circular sheets of metal to modern pans with a handle) are used depending on location, culture and availability

It is also a custom, once the coffee is roasted, to go around and spread the aroma of the roasted beans to the people, rooms and any other important figure of the family

The Jebena (ጀበና) is a traditional coffee pot endemic to the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia 🇪🇹, Eritrea 🇪🇷 and Sudan 🇸🇩)

Typically made out of clay, it plays a central role in Ethiopian coffee ceremonies

It also used to symbolize womanhood and status in previous generations

Depending on region and ethnicity it comes in many different shapes, colors, textures and ornaments

Coffee ☕ in Ethiopia 🇪🇹 is much more than an energizing, hot beverage.

It's a cultural essence, a social glue, a national pride and, in some communities, a spiritual gateway
