Emergency Appeal: Life-Saving Response to Severe Hunger in Hitsats, Northwestern Tigray
Background and Crisis Overview:
AFD - Alaje Farmers Development Center (AFDC) is a Tigray-based humanitarian and development NGO and an extension of Alaje Media, a prominent social media platform that consistently advocates for farmers’ rights, food security, and rural livelihoods. AFDC was founded to operate across emergency response, rehabilitation, and sustainable development, particularly in times of extreme crisis affecting vulnerable communities.
Today, Hitsats in Northwestern Tigray is facing one of the most severe hunger crises in recent history. People;especially internally displaced persons (IDPs), women, children, and the elderly;are dying from hunger. This is not an isolated local problem; it is a national and humanitarian emergency that demands immediate action.
Hitsats has become visible through national and international media, but it represents a much wider tragedy. The suffering witnessed there mirrors the reality of hundreds of thousands of displaced people across Tigray, many of whom are enduring hunger and deprivation far from the public eye.
Urgency of Immediate Humanitarian Action:
While long-term and sustainable solutions;such as the safe return of displaced people to their homes and the restoration of their livelihoods;remain essential, the current situation requires an immediate life-saving response. People in Hitsats are not suffering in the future; they are suffering now.
Emergency food assistance, nutrition support, and basic survival interventions are urgently needed to:
Prevent further loss of life.
Stabilize critically vulnerable households.
Protect children and mothers from irreversible malnutrition.
AFDC recognizes that humanitarian assistance alone is not enough to end displacement permanently. However, without immediate intervention, there may be no lives left to rebuild in the future.
AFDC’s Commitment and Call for Global Solidarity:
As a Tigray-based organization rooted in farming communities and humanitarian advocacy, AFDC is prepared to act swiftly and responsibly. Leveraging its local presence, community trust, and global advocacy networks through Alaje Media, AFDC is mobilizing resources to deliver rapid emergency assistance to the people of Hitsats and other underserved IDP populations.
We therefore call upon:
The Ethiopian diaspora
International humanitarian partners
Donors, institutions, and concerned individuals worldwide to stand in solidarity with the people of Hitsats by channeling their support through Alaje Farmers Development Center.
Our Immediate Goal To save lives now;while laying the foundation for recovery, dignity, and sustainable livelihoods once displaced communities are able to return home.
-Let us reach the people of Hitsats.
-Let us reach displaced communities suffering in silence.
-Let us act now;because hunger cannot wait.
