Dear Readers,

In this issue, Ketema curiously looks into a groundbreaking project that has arguably challenged the capital's mass housing scheme by developing sixteen 12-storey towers within just 18 months by introducing an innovative aluminum formwork system. The site also features an impressive scale of elevated landscapes and communal spaces connecting the blocks over 3 hectares.

Dear Readers,

In this edition, Ketema puts the spotlight on a multistorey tower with a playful three-dimensional façade standing proudly amidst an array of villas that successfully exploited the site constraints, transforming them into opportunities for innovation. The Romel headquarters building stands as a prime example of effectively representing a valuable brand through creative architectural expressions.

In this issue, Ketema looks back on a project that successfully boycotted the use of glazing on its exterior surface in an attempt to redefined the ideal shopping mall design for Addis Ababa. Designed by Vilalta Studio based in Barcelona, the design took inspiration from Merkato, the largest open air market in Africa.

Back in 2017, the building won a special prize for its facade design at Prix Versailles. The facade of the building was designed considering the local climate conditions coupled with the fractal pattern commonly found in the local fabrics.

Dear Readers,

In today’s contemporary life, sport and architecture have a significant impact on the world around us. The role architecture and sports play in shaping cultures, societies, economies, and politics has been a topic of study for decades. The convergence of which offers a compounded influence on our lives today.

This first issue of 2023 explores an architectural piece that delicately symbolizes the dynamics of tennis sport by creating a merely distinguishable form. The International Tennis Club (ITC) building located near Bisrate Gabriel Church, designed by the seasoned practice of Mekbib Kassahun was developed by one of the founders and former president of the Ethiopian Tennis Federation.

Dear Readers,

In today’s world, we are living in what is aptly called the digital age, a time of rapid technological change led by digital technologies. As a result, architectural practice is also impacted by the digital era in that digital technologies are radically changing how buildings are conceived, designed, and produced.

The headline feature of this Ketema edition looks at the newly inaugurated Ethiopian Museum of Art and Science - an architecture that ushers Ethiopia’s efforts to revamp the country’s digital infrastructure. The Museum is an extension of the Friendship Square, which is part of the Sheger Riverside Rehabilitation Project launched in 2019 by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Hello there!

In this issue, Ketema once again puts the spotlight on a building that linked the heritage of 4kilo with modern times by carefully fusing history, context and sustainability. Designed by the eclectic practice of Rahel Shawl, the building breathes an air of modernity while resonating the characters of the 60s and 70s architecture.

We also brought to you a very informative article that summarizes the core values of 'specification' and specifying during the design period of a building by the well-respected senior architect, Wouhib Kebede.

Record 6000m3 of Concrete

Recently, a record volume of 6000m3 concrete was casted at a time to a raft foundation for a high rise building at Mexico square.

Zeleke Belay Architect Plc obtained the project in an architectural design competition held in 2019. The firm felt the lessons learned are unique and would be of interest to architects and engineers.
