Ethiopia's Coffee Exports Generate Over $762 Million in First Quarter of Fiscal Year
Ethiopia's coffee sector has demonstrated remarkable performance in the first three months of the current fiscal year, generating over USD 762.75 million in revenue from 113,542 tons of exports. This represents 123% of the planned revenue target and a 47% increase compared to the same period last year, according to Adugna Debela(PhD), Director General of the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority.
Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Belgium emerged as the top three destination markets, accounting for 44% of the total export volume and 43% of the revenue. The remaining positions in the top ten importers were filled by China, the United States, South Korea, UAE, Japan, Italy, and the Russian Federation. Collectively, these ten markets accounted for 80% of export volume and 79% of revenue, showing significant growth in both volume and value compared to the previous year.
The Authority has implemented several strategic initiatives to sustain this growth trajectory, including market expansion efforts in new destinations like China, establishment of a comprehensive coffee data database, and modernization of the coffee trade control system. Regular analysis of global and national market data is being conducted to support traders and stakeholders in making informed decisions.
Adugna emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral relations with coffee-producing nations to exchange expertise and further develop Ethiopia's coffee sector. The continued focus on quality control, timely exports, and market diversification positions Ethiopian coffee for sustained international success in the competitive global marketplace.
