This is a long post but we've gotten some disturbing news from a few individuals and with the amount of missing cats we've seen pop up we thought we should make a post. There are a few people in Atlantic who have been reported to be dumping cats they catch on their property outside of city limits. This is not only illegal but animal cruelty. (And that's a STATE LAW btw) Dumping cats is not only animal abandonment and animal cruelty but one could argue its also theft. ( Pets are considered property )
It's animal cruelty for multiple reasons.
1. You don't know what kind of cat you just caught, is it feral? A stray? Or someone's pet? All 3 types are very different. A feral cat is adapted to survive without help from humans. A stray and a pet are not. Congratulations you just indirectly killed a cat
2. If the animal isn't spayed you're not helping anyone. It's capable of breeding still. What if the animal was pregnant and you left it in a random field it doesn't know to give birth in where the kittens will now suffer. Exposed to the elements, predators, and starvation
3. Cats are territorial. By taking a cat out of an environment it knows and leaving it in one it doesn't you now have a confused and scared cat. Without proper relocation techniques (a 2 week process btw) the cat you just dumped will try and find its way back home and will often times die on the journey. Assuming it doesnt starve to death first. You have also opened up the territory it was in to new cats. This is the vacuum effect. TNR keeps that from happening. (Which is also why catch and kill has been proven NOT TO WORK)

TNR is expensive and a lot of work. There are 3 groups who have been individually working very hard to TNR cats in Atlantic. Our cats are ear tagged. That means they have been spayed and vaccinated and have someone who feeds them around town. Leave them alone.

I encourage people in Atlantic to keep your pet cats inside or monitor them while outside. Catios, leashes, supervised outside sessions etc. (And if they're not spayed do not let them outside!!!)

Encourage your neighbors to do better for the cats in our community. Help eachother out and spay a stray.

To keep unwanted cats off your yard make it undesirable to be in. Don't leave food out, use smells cats don't like (rue, citrus, garlic, vinegar, coffee grounds etc) block access to hiding spots, you can purchase cat repellent devices, motion activation sprinkler etc.

I may never be a lap cat,

or one who comes when called.

I may resist the hand that tries to touch

and some may think I’m flawed.

to your warm and cozy house

But the box you put out for me,
