Egypt hosts Fatah and Hamas talks as part of ceasefire efforts (UPDATE)

Senior officials from Fatah and Hamas, the rival Palestinian factions, convened in Cairo on Saturday to discuss the formation of a committee to govern Gaza in the wake of the war, according to official sources from both sides.

The talks are part of Egypt’s broader mediation efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israeli occupation and Hamas and to expand humanitarian access into the enclave.

This Cairo meeting follows initial talks last month, when leaders from Hamas and Fatah, the faction led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, discussed forming a governance committee based on an Egyptian proposal, though those discussions were postponed for further deliberation, sources close to the negotiations told Reuters.

Under the proposal, the committee would be composed of independent Palestinian figures unaffiliated with any political faction, potentially addressing the contested question of who will administer Gaza when hostilities end.

However, Israeli occupation opposes any role for Hamas in Gaza’s future administration and has expressed doubts about the ability of the Palestinian Authority under Abbas to govern the region.

Despite mediation efforts from Egypt, Qatar, and backing from the United States, negotiations have yet to yield a truce to halt the fighting, secure the release of Israeli and foreign hostages held by Hamas, or address the thousands of Palestinians detained by Israeli occupation.

While Hamas has indicated its openness to a ceasefire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that the military campaign will persist until Hamas is dismantled.

Meanwhile, Hamas official Izzat al-Risheq dismissed suggestions for limited or temporary truces as “smokescreens,” though he stated that Hamas is “open to any proposals or ideas that ensure the cessation of aggression and the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from Gaza.”

The war, which began on October 7 after Hamas-led resistance fighters launched an attack against Israeli occupation that resulted in the capture of 251 hostages, has left a devastating toll on Gaza.

Palestinian health officials reported at least 60 Palestinian casualties from Israeli airstrikes since Friday, with five fatalities occurring in an attack on the Bureij refugee camp.

Medics and local authorities report that the Israeli offensives, which followed the October 7 assault, have claimed over 43,000 Palestinian lives and left much of Gaza in ruins.

Egypt hosts Fatah-Hamas ceasefire talks on Gaza

Cairo is hosting meetings between Fatah and Hamas to discuss forming a committee to run Gaza as part of post-war plans, according to an official statement by a senior Egyptian security source on Saturday.

The move is part of Egypt's mediation efforts involving Palestinian and Israeli parties to reach a ceasefire and expand humanitarian aid access.

The source also said that Hamas insists that talks should lead to a comprehensive agreement that secures an end to the Israeli brutal war, and also achieves a hostages-for-prisoners swap deal.

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continued to intensify his hatred, when he said war can only end once Hamas is eradicated.

Egypt, UAE airdrop tens of tons of relief aid to Palestinians in northern Gaza

Egyptian and UAE military aircraft conducted on Saturday another airdrop of humanitarian assistance to the northern Gaza Strip, according to an official statement by the Armed Forces Spokesman Gharib Abdel-Hafez.

The Spokesman said that aircraft from both countries departed from Arish International Airport, delivering “tens of tons” of urgent aid to different areas in northern Gaza.

The aid, including food, medication, and other essential supplies, contributes to alleviating the acute humanitarian suffering in the strip.

Supplies were dropped in areas that lacked necessities due to the ongoing military operations.

The spokesman said the aid is part of collaborative efforts with regional and international actors to achieve de-escalation and provide necessary assistance to Gaza.

The Egyptian Air Forces conducted the country’s aid airdrop to Gaza in collaboration with Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and France.

The aid from the five countries was allocated in “large quantities” to areas in northern Gaza, according to the spokesman.

Egypt has been delivering ground aid to 2.4 million Palestinians in Gaza under Israeli bombardment and blockade since 7 October.

While the majority of aid coming to Gaza is Egyptian, assistance coming from other countries and international relief agencies is also being delivered by Egypt.

The Egyptian trucks deliver aid to Gaza through the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza and the Israel-controlled Karm Abu Salem crossing, which is roughly nine kilometres from Rafah.

Over the past weeks, Israeli protesters have gathered at Nitzana in Israel’s Negev Desert and Karm Abu Salem to block food and other essential supplies from entering Gaza.
