Court jails trader for repackaging paracetamol as antimalarial drugs

A Federal High Court in Awka, Anambra State has sentenced a middle-aged man, Ogbodo Friday, to seven years imprisonment without an option of a fine for endangering the lives of innocent consumers through the circulation of fake and counterfeited drugs.

Ogbodo was arrested by the Investigation and Enforcement officers of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control at his residence located at 18, Abagana street, Fegge, Onitsha, Anambra State.

When the building was ransacked, officials recovered packs of falsified Maldox (Sulfadoxine and Pyrimethamine), a brand of anti-malaria tablet manufactured by a registered Nigerian Pharmaceutical Company from him.

This was contained in a statement issued by NAFDAC Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola, on Wednesday.

Akintola disclosed that operatives of the agency, acting on intelligence, swooped on the convict’s residence in Onitsha.

When apprehended, Ogbodo confessed that he cut Emzor Paracetamol tables and repackaged them as Maldox (Sulfadoxine & Pyrimethamine) and supplied the same to undisclosed dealers in falsified Medical Products at the popular Head Bridge Market in Onitsha.

The convict also claimed that he had been in the business of adulterating and falsifying medicines for more than a year, making huge returns.

Speaking further, the media consultant explained that following the overwhelming evidence, the agency charged him to court in Charge No: FHC/AWK/C/57/2021- between FRN V. OGBODO FRIDAY.

“On 26th January 2022, he was arraigned at the Federal High Awka, Anambra State before Justice H.A. Nganjiwa on a two-count charge bordering on possession of Fake Maldox (Sulfadoxine and Pyrimethamine) and packaging of Emzor paracetamol in a manner that is misleading.

“After Ogbodo Friday pleaded guilty to the offence, the Prosecution reviewed the facts thereafter and the Court convicted the Defendant on the two-count charge and sentenced him to five years in prison on count 1 and two years in prison on count 2 without an option of fine,” the statement said.

In his judgment, Justice Nganjiwa condemned the action of the convict, noting with dismay that many people could have died from ingestion of the fake Maldox.

He stressed the need for the court to send the right message to other merchants of death who are still in the dangerous line of business. via HEATHWISE

NYSC Gets TV Broadcast Licence From NBC

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has been granted access to commence live broadcast of its programmes, Naija News reports.

The service announced on Wednesday (today) that it received a broadcast licence from the National Broadcasting Commission to gear up with Direct Satellite Broadcasting as well as Internet Protocol Television, Naija News reports.

The NYSC Director-General, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim made this known in Abuja earlier today after receiving the broadcast licence from his NBC counterpart, Mallam Balarabe Ilela.

Presenting the license, Ilela praised the NYSC programme as one of the successful achievements of the Yakubu Gowon’s administration.

He said the scheme has achieved its purpose of uniting the country in several ways and also contributing immensely to national development.

Ilela added that with the approval, the Federal Government would give more voice to the scheme “to tell the NYSC story; especially its tremendous achievements to the whole world”.

The NBC Director-General added: “The commission normally gives licence in trust and we believe this will be used for the purpose it is given. We are very proud to be part of your progress. With somebody like you, we are sure our license is in safe hands.”

He, however, said the NYSC radio license was underway.

In his remark, while receiving the license, Ibrahim said that since his assumption of duty he has been passionate about the NYSC having its own radio and television stations, stating that it is quite fulfilling that the dream has come to fruition.

Hisbah Board destroys 3.8m bottles of beer in Kano

The Kano State Hisbah board has destroyed over 3.8 million bottles of assorted beer that were confiscated in the last few months.

The Commander-General of the board, Dr Harun Ibn- Sina, stated this during the destruction of the seized beer at Tudun Kalebawa,Dawakin Tofa local government area on Wednesday.

Ibn-Sina explained that, the board is winning the fight against drug abuse, intoxicants and all other societal vices.

He said, the state government approved the destruction of the intoxicants, hence the conduct of the exercise.

” This paved way for the board to secure a court order from Chief Magistrates’ Court, Kano, to damage all the seized beer in its custody.

“The sale, consumption and possession of alcoholic substances are prohibited in the state,” Ibn-sina, added.

He commended the state government for the dedication towards mitigating societal problems and ensuring that Kano competes with others globally.

In the same vein, Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje, has reiterated the state government’s commitment to the welfare of the board’s personnel.

Ganduje was represented at the event by the member, representing Albasu Local Government in the State House of Assenbly and the Chairman, House Committee on Religious Affiars, Hon. Sunusi Usman-Batayya.

Ganduje said that Kano is one of the most peaceful states due to the tireless efforts of the state government and other relevant stakeholders.

The governor urged the general public to support government’s efforts by inculcating good moral values in their children to maintain a crime-free society.

“Kano is the first state to establish a ministry for religious affairs in the country which has gone a long way in promoting peaceful coexistence.

“Hisbah personnel should maintain the tempo as miscreants had devised new tactics of smuggling beer and hard drugs into the state”, Ganduje said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Babazango has allegedly threatened violent attacks against a certain Mr. Vincent Umeh for buying a property near his house in Adamawa State. The said property is located at 33, Mohammed Mustapha Way, Opposite Ford Oil, Yola, Adamawa. Babazango’s grouse is that the property was sold to Vincent Umeh without consulting him before handing it over to the Umeh. In a viral audio, the Police boss also claimed he did not want a Southerner as his next-door neighbour.

Narrating his ordeal, Umeh said, "I acquired the property late last year from one Ismail Mamman; the transaction was perfected and a title deed was issued to me.

"I was surprised to receive a call from a man who introduced himself as DCP Ibrahim Babazango, a neighbour of Ismail Mamman who sold the property to me. He threatened that I should abandon the property because he could not guarantee my safety as his neighbour.

"I pleaded with him to no avail. I asked him what I did wrong by purchasing the property, at least within the context of the law. He kept yelling that I was not welcome in the neighbourhood and I am a stranger in the community.

"Given his threat, I reported the matter to the police and Department of State Services.”

Babazango is currently attached to the Lagos State Police Command.

Many people have heard of The Young Shall Grow Motors, a leading long-distance luxurious transport company in Nigeria with over 500 luxurious buses which moves to and fro on Nigerian roads. But not many know Chief Vincent Amaechi Obianodo, The owner of this giant transport company who started life as a vulcanizer and a bus conductor In Kano State.

Chief Vincent Obianodo was born on August 10, 1947, in Umueze village, Neni in Anambra State. He spent his early life in his hometown and when he became a teenager, he discovered that he had nothing to show or rely on, then he moved to Kano state in search of greener pastures and a better life. In Kano state, Chief Vincent Obianodo learnt how to fix punctured tyres and became perfect at it (a time when few people could do it), hence he had a lot of customers queuing up to fix tyres for their bicycles, motorbikes, and vehicles.

Chief Vincent Obianodo continued fixing tyres just for a few more years before he decided to go into the transportation business as a bus conductor. This was what he did until 1972 when he had gathered enough money to buy his bus. After acquiring maximum knowledge on how the transportation business works, he then decided to stop working as a bus conductor and he acquired a mini-bus to ply from Enugu to Onitsha route.

As his business grew, In 1973 he relocated his business operations from Onitsha to Lagos and ventured into a more developed transport business, which he started with two locally built Mercedes Benz 911 buses. After seven years of operating in Lagos, the number of buses he owned increased from 2 to 40 alongside his transport business. He also engaged in the delivery of goods which also boosted the success of his business.

Chief Vincent Obianodo’s exceptional customer service delivery also got many people patronizing his transport business and by 1978, he decided to expand his business further by opening up a new interstate route, plying from Lagos to Onitsha to Owerri. He also bought a Mercedes Benz 0362 luxury bus for this purpose. This expansion gained his business more fame and within 6 years, his number of buses grew to 150. Owing to the success of the business, Chief Vincent Incorporated his business in 1984 so he could fully cover every possible part of Nigeria, as a leading inter-state luxury bus company.

Today, The Young Shall Grow Motors is one of the largest luxury bus companies in Nigeria with more than 500 buses that ply almost every route in Nigeria as well as other west African countries like Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali and The Benin Republic.

Chief Vincent Obianodo success doesn’t stop at transportation, it also includes other sectors like Hospitality, Oil and Gas, Real estate etc.

Conclusion: Anyone can achieve anything If they are not just smart, but also take advantage of opportunities whenever they are present.
