Again, With Feeling

Again, With Feeling We tell beautiful stories. The phrase "Again, with feeling" is commonly used in artistic performances. The other moves the crowd to tears.

Two people performing the same musical or dramatic piece can achieve wildly different results. One performs it mechanically perfectly, but obtains little reaction. The second performer executed the performance "with feeling" β€” that elusive human quality that makes one piece of work shine so much brighter than another. "Again, With Feeling" is a content agency (writing and video) dedicated to creating powerful content that goes that goes the extra mile. Our purpose is "To tell beautiful stories."

"Malicious compliance" is a common theme in AI fiction. It refers to machines blindly following their orders to the point where they harm humans. 😱

For example, in the movie "I, Robot," robots blindly follow their Three Laws, one of which is to protect humans. This leads to the conclusion that humans have become dangerous to themselves, so Robot Logic dictates that robots must take over the world to "protect humans from themselves." πŸ€–

The recent AI flick "M3GAN" shows an AI-powered doll who's given the mandate to "Protect your primary user." M3GAN's primary user is the young girl Cady that she's "paired with," not Cady's adult caregiver. You can see where this is headed: M3GAN goes psycho "protecting" Cady from harm, and ends up killing a bunch of people. 🀯

Great horror-flick stuff. "Malicious Compliance" throughout.

AI flicks are always super-exaggerated. Hollywood consistently gets the tech wrong. But Hollywood does do an excellent job at exploring the human emotions involvedβ€”the very thing that makes us human. 🎭

In this case, Cady, who has recently lost her parents, becomes deeply attached to the AI doll, and believes her to be like a human. This has profound psychological effects on her.

A news story hit recently where a young man took his life after chatting for weeks with an AI chatbot.

Human PERCEPTION of AI is the larger danger than what AI can do. The fact that AI is so believable is the greatest threat. 😳

Go on, admit it: How many of you haven't wondered if ChatGPT isn't truly alive? πŸ€”

I'll let you come to your own conclusions on that, but keep in mind the fiction we've been taught and the reality we face every day.

What other AI-predicting fiction can we find in the 1800s? We're so glad you asked! 😍

Let us introduce you to George Elliot, the pen name name of Mary Anne Evans. (She took a man's pen name so her work would be taken more seriously by the misogynistic society of the time.) πŸ“

In 1879, she wrote something titled "Shadows of the Coming Race." This piece forms part of a larger work titled "Impressions of Theophrastus Such." πŸ“š

In "Shadows of the Coming Race," Mr. Such chats with a buddy called Trost about the future of the human race. Mr. Such believes that machines will eventually supersede the human race. πŸ€–

This is 1879. the concept of AI was only briefly covered in 1872 by writer Samuel Butler. Computers are on very few people's radar. πŸ˜•

But fiction writers have always predicted the future. Although hints of touch screen technology existed as far back as the late 1960s, it was nowhere near what we see today. But Orson Scott Card used touch screens tech extensivelyβ€”and the idea of portable touch tabletsβ€”in "Ender's Game," which was written in 1985. πŸ“±

"Shadows of the Coming Race" is a tough readβ€”all fiction from that time period isβ€”but Such's prediction is uncanny: He says to his buddy Trost: "Thus this planet may be filled with beings who will be blind and deaf as the inmost rock, yet will execute changes as delicate and complicated as those of human language and all the intricate web of what we call its effects, without sensitive impression, without sensitive impulse." 🀯

What's ChatGPT but a senseless, emotionless "being" without sensitive impression, but who executes "changes as delicate and complicated as those of human language." πŸ’»

Mind-blowing. πŸ’₯

What does Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" have to do with AI? We're so glad you asked! πŸ˜…

This work, published in 1818, is widely considered to be the first work of Science Fiction. It explores the theme of creating an "artificial being" using electricity. πŸ§Ÿβ€β™‚οΈ

In some circles, the theory of creating Frankenstein Monsters is related to that of creating sentient machines. πŸ€–

We won't get into the weeds, but you need to understand that LLMs (Language Learning Models) are not the A-Z of AI. Not even close. Some experts even consider the whole subject of LLMs to be a misnomer and degradation of the greater subject of "AGI"β€”artificial general intelligence. πŸ€”

What's that, you ask? And we're glad you did! πŸ€“

To quote Wikipedia, an "Artificial General Intelligence is a type of hypothetical intelligent agent." It goes on to describe that an AGI can perform tasks normally ascribed to a human. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’Ό

But there are other tests (and plenty of contention on what constitutes a valid test and what doesn't), such as the AGI's ability to pass certain examinations, just like ChatGPT has recently done. 🧐

So, back to Frankenstein's monster: Dr. Frankenstein created this being from body parts and electricity, not exactly how ChatGPT was created. πŸ”Œ

But the novel opened up discussions about what IS sentience? What IS humanity? What makes us human and what doesn't? What VALUE do we have if a machine can pass examinations. πŸ€”

It's a much wider, philosophical discussion that intersects many fields. 🌍

So, does Mary Shelley's Frankenstein fit into the discussion of AI and AGI? πŸ€–

It's an unanswered question because we're into new territory here with ChatGPT's uncanny ability to answer questions that seems so human. But it's important to separate fiction from non-fiction. Perhaps the real difference between machines and humans is that humans have such wild imaginations. πŸ˜…

George Lucas once wrote, "Star Wars is also very much concerned with the tension between humanity and technology, an issue which, for me, dates back even to my first films." πŸ›°οΈ

And here we are in 2023, grappling with the ramifications of AI, what it means, and where we'll all be job-wise in two years. πŸ€–

That "tension between humanity and technology" extends to the spate of stories of how voice deepfakes are now being used by criminals to extort ransoms when no actual kidnapping has taken place. 😱

Star Wars misses by a mile in a lot of the "tech" it introduces. For example, instant holographic communications are possible but the image quality is atrocious. And it completely misses the boat on device connectivity. πŸ“ž

But it got people's imaginations running wild, and the underlying issues remain the same. πŸ€”

Sci-Fi has been the driver for tech innovation for a century and a half, and what we see in sci-fi often informs the way we view new tech. That's probably why so many people think ChatGPT can "think"β€”we've all been watching too many movies and reading too many books. πŸ˜…πŸ“š

Then again, maybe it CAN think, at least in some primitive, subhuman way. For the human race, convinced as we are of our superiority to everything, this might just be the sobering fact we need to make use MORE human and help us develop those skills that do make us human, such as empathy and kindness. 🀝

May the 4th be with you! πŸš€

Do's and Don't's of using ChatGPT to write articles for your business:

Do:
βœ… Create outlines and use them as a starting point (especially useful for topics you don't know much about)
βœ… Generate catchy titles (amazing for this)
βœ… Ask questions such as "What is that word that means [describe word here] and begins with [insert letter here]?"
βœ… Ask "Is the following sentence grammatically correct? [paste sentence]"
βœ… Ask "Summarize the following article and extract the salient points related to [subject being written about]"β€”then paste the article from the web into the prompt.
βœ… Ask "What is a more [positive/friendly/other modifier] word for [potentially offensive word]?"
βœ… Ask "What does [word] mean?"
βœ… Ask "Cite a source on the internet for ['fact' that ChatGPT outputted." then CHECK THE LINK! 🀣 It's incredible how many links this tool invents.
βœ… When finished, prompt: "Write a meta desc for the following article."β€”then tweak the meta desc, and run it through an AI content generator
βœ… "Provide 4 alternative titles for this article."
βœ… ** FACT-CHECK EVERYTHING! **
βœ… Ask, "Convert this title into AP Style title case: [paste title here]"
βœ… Write a summary of each section in the article, then use that as a guide for your own writing. The more human-written bullet points you provide, the more "human" the output becomes.
βœ… Ask "Summarize [difficult concept] in a way a 10-year-old could understand." Then write about it.
βœ… Ask "Correlate [subject A] and [subject B] in interesting ways, drawing from factual historical record." Then FACT-CHECK the response.

Don't:
🚫 Get it to write the entire article
🚫 Get it to write interview-style articles or news pieces
🚫 Publish without editing
🚫 Publish without fact-checking (‼️‼️)
🚫 Publish without running it through (a) an AI content detector and (b) plagiarism checker
🚫 Use AI-written content as-is (this will potentially become an issue for SEO as Google gets better at detecting AI content)
🚫 Assume any article is better than no article. With so much quantity, Google will start to prioritize quality. Use human editors, graphics designers, and go the extra mile to make that article shine.

IMPORTANT! If you're an expert at your topic, skip ChatGPT altogether. Thought pieces and leadership pieces are the way of the future and will easily outshine the deluge of AI articles.

What was the first fiction book to introduce AI? Well, we're glad you asked. πŸ˜…

It was written in 1872 by Samuel Butler, an English writer, and was titled Erewhon. πŸ“š

One "book" (a.k.a. "part") of three chapters, titled "Book of the Machines," concerns itself with conscious and self-replicating machines. πŸ€–

So, like, androids. But this is 1872. 🀯

What else was going down in 1872? This was two years into the Second Industrial Revolution that brought in mass production and industrialization. 🏭

Technically speaking, Ada Lovelace (daughter of Lord Byron) had already written the world's first computer program in 1843 that was supposed to run on Charles Babbage's "Analytical Engine"β€”the world's first computer that was never built. πŸ’»

But computing wasn't really on anyone's radar, not to mention the idea that machines could think. But Butler extrapolated the ideas from concepts recently introduced by Charles Darwin, i.e., that machines might also undergo a sort of "natural selection" and begin to evolve consciousness. πŸ€”

So, now you know! πŸ‘

When are we going to address the elephant in the room? 🐘

AI-generated writing sucks. 😩

Now, before you start screaming, "Ah, they're writers; they're scared about it taking their jobs!" go check out our samples page and see how many in-depth articles we've written on this topic. πŸ“

We use ChatGPT daily. It sucks as a writer. πŸ˜’ But we'll keep using it. It saves about 30% of research time. It also creates semi-decent outlines (which we end up only using 50% of). The types of articles we use it to create outlines for are the typical "SEO Articles" that deluge the internet. The articles that have been written 10,000 times before and whose structure is virtually set in stone.

AI writing tools have their uses, but they're terrible for incisive, hard-hitting, meaningful writingβ€”like, they are really bad. 🀦

Are you wondering about bounce rates? Take a look at the quality of these writing tools produce. ✍️

If you think ChatGPT or any of these tools "Write well," then you've spent too much time reading keyword-stuffed articles "written for robots," which is what these tools have been fed to make them "write like humans." πŸ€–

The irony is hilarious. It's the snake eating its tail. 🐍

The deluge of keyword-stuffed drivel will make the competitive landscape even worse. 😣 AI-generated articles simply won't compete anymore. There will be too much mediocre content out there.

So, what's going to compete? HUMAN-WRITTEN articles will be the new gems in the dross.πŸ’Ž

Yes, ChatGPT does have its uses when you fact-check its output, edit the hell out of what it spews out, and when you need a rough outline for an article. πŸ“š

It also defines words well and gives excellent summaries of complicated topics. Not bad as a research tool (you do have to fact-check everything). πŸ”

As a coding assistant, it's absolutely phenomenal! πŸ–₯️

It's also good for summarizing content (great for speeding up research), changing the tone of content, and numerous other tasks. We love it.

But let's be real, it's an awful writer. Humans don't write like that. Go pick up Hemingway. Go pick up Stephen King. If you think robots come even 10% close to original human creativity, you've been reading too many Jasper-powered articles. πŸ“–
